Gale Sayers was an American professional football player. A halfback and return specialist, he played his seven-year professional career with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He was also athletic director for Southern Illinois, and interim athletic director for Tennessee State. He was regarded as one of the greatest, and was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1977. He was nicknamed :the Kansas Comet.”

Gale was the son of Bernice and Roger Earl Sayers, a farmer, auto dealership worker, and mechanic for Goodyear. His brother is professional football player Ron Sayers. He was partly raised in Omaha, Nebraska. He was married to Ardythe, until his death. The couple were philanthropists in Chicago.

Gale’s paternal grandfather was Edward William “Ed”/Eddie Sayers (the son of William Patent Sayers/Sayer and Mary Jane Taylor). Edward was born in Richmond, Nebraska. William was born in West Virginia, the son of Sophia Sayers, and of a man whose surname was Yates. Mary Jane was born in Missouri.

Gale’s paternal grandmother was named Maggie.

Gale’s maternal grandfather was named David Cannon.
