Franchot Tone was an American actor, producer, and director. He was a major film star of the 1930s and 1940s. Franchot was the son of Gertrude Van Vranken/Vrancken (Franchot), a socialite, and Dr. Frank Jerome Tone, Sr., who was president of the Carborundum Company. His mother was born in Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. His family was upper-class. His maternal great-grandfather, Richard Franchot, was a Republican Party politician, who was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from March 4, 1861 to March 3, 1863; as well as an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and an executive of railroad companies Albany and Susquehanna Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad.

Franchot had two children with his former wife, actress and model Jean Wallace.

Franchot’s paternal grandfather was Thomas Jefferson Tone (the son of John Tone and Electa/Electra Hubbard). Thomas was born in Bergen, Genesee, New York. John was born in Scipio, Cayuga, New York, the son of John Andrew Tone, whose paternal grandparents were from Dublin, Ireland, and Suffolk, England, respectively; and of Margaret Manahan, whose father was Irish. Franchot’s great-great-grandparents John and Margaret were first cousins, with Margaret’s mother also having been a Tone. Franchot’s great-grandmother Electra was born in Oneida, New York, the daughter of Ithiel Hubbard and Mary Gains/Gaines.

Franchot’s paternal grandmother was Catherine Delia “Kate” Spafford/Stafford (the daughter of Sumner Spafford and Delia Barber). Catherine was born in New York. Sumner was born in Buckland, Franklin, Massachusetts, the son of Jacob Spofford and Abigail Deane. Franchot’s great-grandmother Delia was born in Simsbury, Connecticut, the daughter of James Barber and Lovina Humphreys.

Franchot’s maternal grandfather was Stanislas Pascal Franchot (the son of Richard Hansen/Hanson Franchot and Ann/Anna Van Vranken). Stanislas was born in Morris, Otsego, New York. Richard was born in Morris, the son of Stanislas Pascal/Paschal Franchot, who was born in Chamouilley, Département de la Haute-Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France; and of Catharina/Catherine Hansen, who was of Dutch heritage. Franchot’s great-grandmother Ann was born in Schenectady, New York, the daughter of Nicholas Van Vranken and Jannet McClelland, whose father was Scottish.

Franchot’s maternal grandmother was Annie Powers Eells (the daughter of The Rev. David Edwards “Edward” Eells and Ester/Hester Ann “Hettie” Wiltberger). Annie was born in Boone, Kentucky. The Rev. David was born in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut, the son of Samuel Edwards Eells and Lucina/Luceba Woodward. Franchot’s great-grandmother Ester was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of The Rev. John Christian/Chris Wiltberger, whose paternal grandparents were German, from Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg, respectively; and of Maria Louise Powers, whose parents were born in England, with roots in Northamptonshire.
