Estelle Getty was an American actress and comedian. She was known for playing Sophia Petrillo on the sitcom The Golden Girls, as well as on Blossom, The Golden Palace, Nurses, and Empty Nest. Her roles also included the films Deadly Force, Mask (1985), Mannequin (1987), Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, and Stuart Little; and the made-for-tv movies No Man’s Land (1984), Copacabana, A Match Made in Heaven, and The Sissy Duckling. Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White were the other stars of The Golden Girls.
Estelle was the daughter of Sarah (Lacher) and Charles Scher/Scherr, who ran the family glass window installation business. Her parents were Jewish emigrants, her father from Monastyryska, Chortkiv Raion, Ternopilska, and her mother from Lvivska; the areas were part of Poland for a time, and are now in Ukraine. She was married to Arthur Gettleman, until his death, with whom she had two children.
