Danny Kaye was an American actor, singer, dancer, comedian, and musician. His roles included the films Up in Arms, Wonder Man (1945), The Kid from Brooklyn, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947), A Song Is Born, It’s a Great Feeling, The Inspector General (1949), On the Riviera, Hans Christian Andersen (1952), Knock on Wood, White Christmas (1954), The Court Jester, Merry Andrew, Me and the Colonel, The Five Pennies, On the Double, The Man from the Diners’ Club, and The Madwoman of Chaillot; the television specials Here Comes Peter Cottontail, The Enchanted World of Danny Kaye: The Emperor’s New Clothes, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan (1976); and the made-for-tv movie Skokie; as well as works on stage. He was the host of The Danny Kaye Show from 1963 to 1967.
His parents, Clara “Ida” (Nemerovsky) and Jacob Kaminsky, were Jewish emigrants. His father was from Kiev, now in Ukraine, with roots in Lithuania. His mother was from Kyivska, then-Russian Empire. Danny was married to lyricist, composer, and producer Sylvia Fine, until his death. Sylvia was also Jewish. The couple had a daughter.
Danny’s paternal grandfather was Itzak/Yitzchak/Isaac Yehuda Labe/Louis Kaminsky (the son of Moshe/Moses Kaminsky and Bessie/Basha Rosen Cohen). Itzak was born in Vilna Ukraina, Kakhovka Raion, Khersonska, Ukraine. Moses was the son of Joseph Kaminsky and Naomi.
Danny’s paternal grandmother was Jennie/Elka/Elke Shrizo/Scherer (the daughter of Yehoshua/Joseph Shrizo and Ida Feiga Winograd). Jennie was born in Vilna Ukraina, Kakhovka Raion, Khersonska, Ukraine.
Danny’s maternal grandfather was named Issie Nemerovsky/Nemerovskij/Nemirovskij. Issie was born in Dniprovs’kyi raion, Kyiv, Ukraine.
Danny’s maternal grandmother was named Vella Pertika. Vella was from Kyiv.
