Daniel Ortega is a Nicaraguan politician, revolutionary, and guerrilla fighter. He has been Co-President of Nicaragua, since 10 January, 2007; officially serving with his wife, politician and poet Rosario Murillo. He was a leader of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional, FSLN) in the 1970s, which overthrew the country’s Somoza dictatorship in 1979; he had formed the insurrectionist Tercerista (Third Way) faction of the Sandinistas with his brother Humberto. He was subsequently a member of the five-person Junta of National Reconstruction, of which he was Coordinator, from 18 July, 1979 to 10 January, 1985; and President of Nicaragua, from 10 January, 1985 to 25 April, 1990.

Daniel is the son of Albertina Lidia Saavedra Rivas and Daniel Simeón Ortega Cerda. His mother was imprisoned by Anastasio Somoza Debayle’s regime for political reasons. He is the brother of revolutionary, military leader, writer, and businessperson Humberto Ortega, and revolutionary Camilo Ortega.

Daniel and Rosario Murillo have eight children. Their son is oligarch, businessperson, and rock musician Juan Carlos Ortega Murillo. Juan Carlos is married to architect, model, and beauty pageant titleholder Xiomara Blandino, who was Miss Nicaragua 2007. Also among their children is Daniel’s stepdaughter, whom he adopted, Zoilamérica Ortega Murillo, a consultant for LGBTI rights group Comunidad Casabierta.

Daniel’s paternal grandfather was Marco Antonio Ortega Brenes/Ortega Mondragón (the son of Ignacio Ortega and Dolores Mondragón).
