Dane DeHaan is an American actor and model. His roles include the films Amigo (2010), Chronicle, Jack & Diane, Lawless, Lincoln (2022), The Place Beyond the Pines, Devil’s Knot, Kill Your Darlings, Metallica: Through the Never (and its accompanying music video), The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Life After Beth, Knight of Cups, Life (2015), Leap!/Ballerina (2016), Two Lovers and a Bear, A Cure for Wellness, Tulip Fever, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, The Boxcar Children: Surprise Island, The Kid (2019), Oppenheimer (2023), Dumb Money, and Wardriver; the series In Treatment, True Blood, ZeroZeroZero, The Stranger, Lisey’s Story, The Staircase, and American Primeval; the made-for-tv movie At Risk (2010); and the music video for “I Bet My Life.”

Dane’s ancestry is German, Dutch, Italian/Sicilian, English, and a small amount of Welsh and Northern Irish. His surname, de Haan or DeHaan, means “the rooster” in Dutch.

Dane is married to actress Anna Wood, with whom he has two children.

Dane’s paternal grandfather was William Robert DeHaan (the son of William DeHaan and Ethel Margaret Ande). Dane’s grandfather William was born in New Jersey. Dane’s great-grandfather William was born in New Jersey, to Dutch parents, Frank DeHaan and Margaret. Ethel was born in New Jersey, the daughter of William Ande, who was of German descent; and of Nellie/Lillie Vanderbeck, who was of Dutch origin.

Dane’s paternal grandmother was Beth Ellen Sine (the daughter of Edwin Randolph Sine and Katherine M. Kosegarten). Beth was born in New York. Edwin was the son of Charles Rush Sine, who was a minister in Tonawanda, New York; and of Ella H. Grieser. Edwin had mostly German, as well as Welsh and Northern Irish, ancestry. Katherine’s father, Otto Frederick Kosegarten, was the son of German emigrants, Frederick J. Kosegarten, from Neukalen, Mecklenburg; and Caroline Salchow. Katherine’s mother, Dane’s great-great-grandmother Augusta E. “Gussie” Halstead, was born in Pennsylvania, to Charles Halstead and Augusta Bell. The surnames Halstead and Bell are English.

Dane’s maternal grandmother was born Laura M. Boscia (the daughter of Frank Paul Boscia and Anna Mae Fahr). Laura was born in Easton, Pennsylvania. Frank was an Italian emigrant, born in Messina, Italy, the son of Nicholas Boscia and Concetta Olla. This makes Dane of at least one eighth Italian descent. Dane’s great-grandmother Anna had German ancestry, the daughter of Jacob Fahr and Bertha S. Deemer.
