Cornel Wilde was an American actor and film director. His roles included the films High Sierra, Knockout (1941), Kisses for Breakfast, The Perfect Snob, Manila Calling, Life Begins at Eight-Thirty, Wintertime, A Song to Remember, A Thousand and One Nights, Leave Her to Heaven (1945), The Bandit of Sherwood Forest, Centennial Summer, The Homestretch, Forever Amber, It Had to Be You, The Walls of Jericho, Road House (1948), Shockproof, Two Flags West, The Greatest Show on Earth, At Sword’s Point, California Conquest, Operation Secret, Treasure of the Golden Condor, Main Street to Broadway, Saadia, Star of India, Woman’s World, Passion (1953), The Big Combo, The Scarlet Coat, Hot Blood, Beyond Mombasa, Omar Khayyam (1957), Edge of Eternity, Constantine and the Cross, The Comic, The Norseman (1978), The Fifth Musketeer, and Flesh and Bullets; and the made-for-tv movie Gargoyles (1972). He directed the films Storm Fear, The Devil’s Hairpin, Maracaibo, Lancelot and Guinevere, The Naked Prey, Beach Red, No Blade of Grass, and Sharks’ Treasure, and played the lead role in all but No Blade; he also wrote Sharks’ Treasure, and co-wrote The Devil’s Hairpin, Lancelot and Guinevere, Beach Red, and No Blade of Grass. He was also credited as Clark Wales and Jefferson Pascal.
Cornel was the son of Hungarian Jewish parents, Rayna Miryam/Renée Mary (Vid) and Vojtech Béla Weisz (later Louis Bela Wilde). His father was born in Prievidza, Trenčín Region, Slovakia. His mother was born in Rohovce, Dunajská Streda, Trnava Region, Slovakia. It appears that his parents later converted to Christianity. His family came to the U.S. in 1920.
Cornel had a daughter with his former wife, actress Patricia Knight; and a son with his former wife, actress Jean Wallace.
Cornel’s paternal grandfather was Herman/Hermann Weisz (the son of Salamon Weisz and Regina Reif/Reisz). Herman was born in Nemet Prona, Nitra, Slovakia. Salamon was born in Nagy Tapolscan. Regina was born in Baán, Trencsén.
Cornel’s paternal grandmother was Helene/Helena Stern (the daughter of Joseph/Josef Hirsch Stern and Josephina Ester “Pepi” Weil). Helene was born in Neszloza, Trencin, Slovakia. Joseph was born in Rajecz, Trencsén, the son of Gezel/Getzel Stern and Rozalia Rosenzweig. Josephina was born in Kisdivény, Trencsén, the daughter of Reuben Rudolf Ádám Rezső Weider-Weil and Katharina Gitel Schusdek/Schustek.
Cornel’s maternal grandfather was named Armin Albert Vid.
