He was born in Aurora, Colorado, and raised in Odessa, Texas, initially. His parents were in the mortgage industry. His family moved to Los Angeles, California, during his early teens.

Carl was born in Denton, Texas, to Scottish parents, from Paisley, Renfrewshire. Peter was the son of Michael Storrie and Mary Crawford. Elizabeth was the daughter of Michael Todd, who was from Edinburgh; and of Elizabeth Lauchlan.
Connor’s paternal grandmother was Mary Ellen Turner (the daughter of Earl Emanuel Turner and Chloe Matilda Bolin). Mary Ellen was born in Wilton, Alabama, and had deep roots in the U.S. Earl was the son of Lewis Washington Turner and Sarah Annie Breeding. Connor’s great-grandmother Chloe was the daughter of Robert Hubert Bolin and Carrie F. Nolen.

I don’t know who figured that Murray Alvin Gurley also used his stepfather’s surname Patterson, but thanks to that I found his parents, Robert William Gurley and Fannie E. Vandeveer. They ware all listed as “white”, so I don’t know why Murray was listed as “negro” on that army record…
I don’t know, but it’s certainly not unheard of to be listed as different races across multiple census. I’ve had individual ancestors listed as white, “mulatto” and “negro” in the span of 30-40 years worth of census. lol
May have well just been a mistake, but it doesn’t have to be, either.

Maybe Murray was mixed
Yeah, seems likely a mixed race person. Possibly someone who passed for white later. Interesting find.
While that last line may be technically right, it makes it sound like he grew up California, when he spent most of his childhood in Odessa. He apparently didn’t move to CA until middle school/junior high.
