Claude Rains was an English and American actor. His roles included the films The Invisible Man (1933), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Wolf Man (1941), Now, Voyager; Casablanca, Kings Row, Notorious (1946), Lawrence of Arabia, and The Greatest Story Ever Told.

He was the son of Emily Eliza (Cox) and Fred Rains (Frederick William Rains), who was an actor and film director. He became a U.S. citizen in 1939. Claude was married to Rosemary Clark Schrode, until his death. He had a daughter, actress Jessica Rains, with his former wife Frances Propper.

Claude’s paternal grandfather was Alfred Rains (the son of Enoch William Rains and Sarah Hawks). Alfred was born in Rainham, Medway, Kent.

Claude’s paternal grandmother was named Eliza Adelaide Morley.
