Boris Karloff was a British actor. He starred as the monster in the film Frankenstein (1931), and its sequels Bride of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein. His roles also included the films Scarface, Night World, The Old Dark House, The Mask of Fu Manchu, The Mummy (1932), The Ghoul (1933), The House of Rothschild, The Black Cat (1934), The Raven (1935, 1963), The Black Room, The Invisible Ray, The Walking Dead (1936), The Man Who Changed His Mind, Night Key, The Invisible Menace, Mr. Wong, Detective; The Mystery of Mr. Wong, Mr. Wong in Chinatown, Tower of London (1939), Black Friday, The Ape (1940), You’ll Find Out, The Devil Commands, The Boogie Man Will Get You, The Climax (1944), The House of Frankenstein, The Body Snatcher, Isle of the Dead, Bedlam (1946), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947), Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome, Tap Roots, Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff; The Strange Door, The Black Castle, Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Sabaka, Voodoo Island, Corridors of Blood, The Terror (1963), Black Sabbath, The Comedy of Terrors, Bikini Beach, Die, Monster, Die!; The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini, Mad Monster Party?, The Sorcerers, Targets (1968), and House of Evil; and narrating, and voicing the title character in, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966). He was also billed as KARLOFF, and Karloff the Uncanny.

He was the son of Elizabeth Sarah “Eliza” (Millard) and Edward John Pratt, Jr. Edward was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. Eliza was born in Poona, Bombay, India.

Boris was said to have some Indian ancestry. It is not clear if this is accurate.

Boris was married to Evelyn Hope Helmore, until his death. He had a daughter with his former wife Dorothy Stine.

Boris’s paternal grandfather was named Edward John Pratt.

Boris’s maternal grandfather was James Millard (the son of David Millard and Sarah Gray). James was born in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England. David was the son of James Millard and Winifred Harman. Sarah was the daughter of Charles Gray and Elizabeth Thornbeth.

Boris’s maternal grandmother was Eliza Julia Edwards/Crawford (the daughter of Thomas Edwards and Mary Anne Glascott). Eliza was born in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India, and was the sister of Anna Leonowens (born Anna Harriette Emma Edwards), a travel writer, educator, and social activist, who inspired the musical The King and I (1951). Thomas was born in St. George Parish, Middlesex, England. Boris’s great-grandmother Mary Anne was the daughter of William Vaudrey Glascott, who was born in Hatherleigh, Devon, England; and of a woman who may have been of Indian and/or Eurasian descent.

He is said to have been a distant relative of Canadian actor Benjamin Ayres.
