Bob Hope was a British-born American stand-up comedian, vaudevillian, actor, singer, dancer, athlete, and author. His roles included the films The Big Broadcast of 1938, College Swing, Never Say Die, The Cat and the Canary (1939), Road to Singapore, The Ghost Breakers, Nothing But the Truth, Louisiana Purchase (1941), Star Spangled Rhythm, My Favorite Blonde, Road to Morocco, They Got Me Covered, The Princess and the Pirate, Road to Utopia, Monsieur Beaucaire, My Favorite Brunette, Road to Rio, The Paleface, The Great Lover, Fancy Pants, The Lemon Drop Kid, Son of Paleface, Off Limits, Scared Stiff (1953), The Seven Little Foys, That Certain Feeling, The Iron Petticoat, Beau James, Paris Holiday, The Facts of Life (1960), The Road to Hong Kong, A Global Affair, Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number!; How to Commit Marriage, and Cancel My Reservation. He was also known as Lester Hope, Les Hope, and Packy East.

Bob was born in Eltham, London, England, the son of Avis (Townes/Towne) and William Henry “Harry” Hope, a stonecutter, who worked on the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge. His family moved to the U.S. in 1908, settling in Cleveland, Ohio; he became a U.S. citizen in 1920. Bob was married to American singer, entertainer, and philanthropist Dolores Hope, until his death. The couple had four children, who were adopted.

Bob’s paternal grandfather was James Alfred Hope (the son of James English and Elizabeth Betsy Hopes). Bob’s grandfather James was born in Weston, Somerset.

Bob’s paternal grandmother was Emily Collard (the daughter of William Collard and Elizabeth Watts). Emily was born in Weare, Sedgemoor, Somerset.
