Alexander Pushkin was a Russian poet, playwright, and novelist. Active in the Romantic era, he is considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet, and the founder of modern Russian literature. His works included the lyric poems Ode to Liberty, I Loved You, and To the Slanderers of Russia; the poems Ruslan and Ludmila, The Prisoner of the Caucasus, The Gabrieliad, The Fountain of Bakhchisaray, The Gypsies, Poltava, Eugene Onegin, and The Bronze Horseman; the fairy tales in verse The Bridegroom, The Tale of the Priest and of His Workman Balda, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish, The Tale of the Dead Princess, and The Tale of the Golden Cockerel; the dramas Boris Godunov, The Miserly Knight, Mozart and Salieri, The Stone Guest, and A Feast in Time of Plague; the novels The Moor of Peter the Great, The Captain’s Daughter, and Dubrovsky; the short stories The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin and The Queen of Spades; and the non-fiction A Journey to Arzrum and History of Peter.

Alexander was the son of Nadezhda Osipovna (Gannibal) and Sergei Lvovich Pushkin. His father was born in Saint Petersburg, of Russian descent. Alexander’s father’s family was from Russian nobility, and traced its ancestry back to the 12th century. Alexander’s mother was of one half Russian and one quarter Cameroonian African descent, with her other roots being Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and German.

He was married to Natalia Pushkina, until his death. The couple had four children.

Alexander’s paternal grandfather was Lev Alexandrovich Pushkin (the son of Alexander Petrovich Pushkin and Evdokia/Avdotia/Advotya Ivanovna Golovina). Lev was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and was a guard captain and lieutenant colonel. Alexander’s great-grandfather Alexander was sergeant of the Life Guards of the Preobrazhensky Regiment. He was the son of Petr Petrovich Pushkin and Fedosya Y. Esipova. Alexander’s great-grandmother Evdokia was the daughter of Ivan Mikhailovich Golovin, a prominetn shipbuilder; and of Maria Bogdanovna Glebova.

Alexander’s paternal grandmother was Olga Vassilievna/Vasilievna/Vasilevna Chicherina (the daughter of Col. Vasiliy/Vasily Ivanovich Chicherin and Lukerya/Lukiya Vassilievna/Vasilyevna/Vasilievna Priklonskaya). Alexander’s great-grandfather Vasiliy was the son of Ivan Andreevich Chicherin and Juliana Andreyevna Chelyustkina. Lukerya was the daughter of Vasily Ivanovich Priklonsky and Julianna Georgievna/Yuryevna Esipova.

Alexander’s maternal grandfather was Osip Abramovich Gannibal/Hannibal (the son of Gen. Abram Petrovich, or Abraham Petrov Gannibal/Hannibal and Christine/Christina/Christiana Regina von Sheberg/Sjöberg/Siöberg). Alexander’s grandfather Osip was born in Tallinn, Tallinna linn, Harjumaa, Estonia. Alexander’s great-grandfather Abram was an African from the territory of modern Cameroon; previously thought to be Ethiopia. Abram was kidnapped to Constantinople as a gift to the Ottoman Sultan. He was later brought to Russia, where he became a nobleman, military engineer and commander, and general. Alexander’s great-grandmother Christina was the daughter of Matthias/Mathias/Mattias Johann/Johan Gustafsson Sjoburg/Siöberg and Christina Elisabet/Elizabeth/Elisabeth von Albedyll/D’Albedylle/d’Albedyll, and had Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and German ancestry.

Alexander’s maternal grandmother was Maria Alekseevna/Alekseyevna/Aleksejevna Pushkina (the daughter of Aleksey/Alexey Fedorovich Pushkin and Sarra Yuryevna/Georgievna Rzhevskaya/Rzhevskaja). Maria was Russian, born in Nizhny Novgorod. She was descended from Russian nobility. Aleksey was the son of Fedor Petrovich Pushkin and Ksenia Ivanovna Koreneva. Alexander’s great-grandmother Sarra was the daughter of Yuri Alekseevich Rzhevsky and Ekaterina Nikiforovna N.
