Al Freeman, Jr. was an American actor, director, and educator. His roles included the films Torpedo Run, This Rebel Breed, Sniper’s Ridge, Black Like Me, The Troublemaker, Ensign Pulver, Dutchman (1967), The Detective (1968), Finian’s Rainbow, The Lost Man (1969), Castle Keep, My Sweet Charlie, To Be Young, Gifted and Black; Seven Hours to Judgment, Malcolm X (1992), Once Upon a Time… When We Were Colored, and Down in the Delta; the shows The Edge of Night, One Life to Live, Hot l Baltimore, and Homicide: Life on the Street; the mini-series King (1978) and Roots: The Next Generations; and the made-for-tv movie Assault at West Point: The Court-Martial of Johnson Whittaker.

He was the son of Lottie Brisette (Coleman) and Albert Cornelius Freeman, a jazz pianist. His father was from Columbus, Ohio. His mother was from Victoria, Texas. He served in the Air Force in the Korean War. Al was married to Sevara E. Clemon, until his death.
