Abel Ferrara is an American director, screenwriter, and actor. He has directed the films 9 Lives of a Wet Pussy, The Driller Killer (1979), Ms .45, Fear City, China Girl (1987), Cat Chaser, King of New York, Bad Lieutenant, Body Snatchers, Dangerous Game (1993), The Addiction, The Funeral (1996), The Blackout (1997), New Rose Hotel, ‘R Xmas, Mary (2005), Go Go Tales, 4:44 Last Day on Earth, Welcome to New York (2014), Pasolini, Tommaso (2019), Siberia (2020), Zeros and Ones, and Padre Pio. He also co-wrote Bad Lieutenant, The Blackout, New Rose Hotel, ‘R Xmas, Mary, Welcome to New York, Siberia, and Padre Pio; and wrote Go Go Tales, 4:44 Last Day on Earth, Tommaso, and Zeros and Ones. He directed the documentaries Chelsea on the Rocks, which he co-wrote; Napoli, Napoli, Napoli; Alive in France, The Projectionist (2019), Sportin’ Life (2020), and Turn in the Wound. He also directed the made-for-tv movies The Gladiator (1986), The Loner, and a segment of Subway Stories: Tales from the Underground; episodes of Miami Vice; and the music videos for “California” and “Don’t Change Your Plans.” He has also been billed as Jimmy Boy L.
Abel’s father, Alfred J., a bookie, of Italian descent, changed the family’s surname from Esposito to Ferrara. His parents were emigrants, from Sarno, Province of Salerno, Campania, Italy.
Abel’s mother was of Irish Catholic background.
Abel is married to Cristina Chiriac. He has three children, including a daughter with Cristina.
Abel’s paternal grandfather was Abele Ferrara (the son of Alfonso Ferrara and Alfonsa Baselice).
Abel’s paternal grandmother was named Emilia Catalano.

The story of the changed surname does not look accurate.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. The ship manifest clearly says his grandfather’s name was Ferrara before his father was even born.
They were even on the 1925 New York State census as Ferrara.

Abel’s grandfather, Abele Esposito (the son of Alfonso Esposito and Alfonsa Baselice), immigrated in 1902, at 22, from Sarno, Province of Salerno, Campania, Italy. For some reason Abel’s father, Alfred J. , a bookie, changed the family’s surname from “Esposito” to “Ferrara”.
Abel’s grandmother was Emilia Catalano, also born in Sarno.
Abel’s mother is of Irish Catholic extraction.
