This study aims to evaluate the common side effects of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and willingness to receive second dose among healthcare workers within Enugu metropolis. It was a cross -sectional survey carried out from March to June, 2021 using validated self-administered questionnaire among 89 participants. Data analysis were conducted using SPSS version 21.0 (p<0.05). The median age of the participants was 38 years and 71 (79.8%) of them constitute the frontline health-workers. Post vaccination side effects was reported by 78 (87.6%) of the participant. Among the reported side effects, pain at the injection site was the most common 55 (62%) while sore throat, chills and rigor were the least occurring in 13 (14.6%) respectively. Surgeons' disposition on the use of autologous blood transfusion in tertiary hospitals in Enugu, Nigeria

Background: The need for autologous blood transfusion in our tertiary hospitals to restore patien... more Background: The need for autologous blood transfusion in our tertiary hospitals to restore patients' hemodynamics with little or no complications cannot be overemphasized. Aims: This study is aimed at assessing surgeons' challenges and patients' readiness to accept autologous blood transfusion. Materials and Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, and National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, from September to December 2020. A convenient sampling method was adopted in the distribution of questionnaires, and a total of 67 surgeons were enrolled in the study. Collated data were analyzed using SPSS software 21. Results: The study revealed that 60% of the respondents claimed that commercial donors were observed to be the major source of allogenic blood donation. Consequently, 34.3% and 80.6% of the respondents admitted that blood-borne transmissible infections and blood transfusion reactions, respectively, were still a challenge in their practice. The outcome from this study also showed that 59% of the respondents claimed that their patients are not knowledgeable enough to make informed decision on the use of autologous blood transfusion while 52.4% of the respondents admitted that they do not have the facility for processing autologous blood transfusion. For the surgical specialties, all were willing to prescribe autologous blood transfusion for their patients, though no statistical difference (P < 0.05) exists among the specialties. Conclusion: Autologous blood transfusion has remained the mainstay as effective and safest means of blood transfusion in overall patient care; hence, surgeons should incorporate this concept into their practice to enable patients make an informed decision.

This study aims to describe the pattern of closed long bone diaphyseal fractures in acute trauma setting. A prospective study of patients who presented at the trauma unit of National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu over a 6months period was undertaken. Sixty two patients with closed long bone diaphyseal fractures of femur, tibia and humerus who consented and met the study inclusion criteria were prospectively included and evaluated. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20. A total of 2880 patients presented during the period of study out of which, 62 (37 males and 25 females) presented with closed long bone diaphyseal fractures giving an incidence of 21.5/1000 trauma unit attendance (and occurring mostly in males 32.1/1000). The 21-30years age group distribution were the mostly affected (35.5%) with closed long bone diaphyseal fracture at presentation. Motor vehicular accident was the leading cause of closed long bone diaphyseal fractures (66.7%) followed by tricycle accident (19.4%) and assault (1.9%), the least. Transverse fractures (40.3%) were the most common fracture pattern followed by the comminuted fracture (27.4%), The anatomic location of fractures in diaphyseal long bones of the humerus, femur and tibia did not show any significant difference (p<0.05). With transverse and comminuted fracture being the commonest fracture patterns distribution and motor vehicular accidents the leading cause, these could be of a guide for orthopaedic surgeons to decide on the best interventional approach and to improve functional outcome.

This study was designed to analyze the morphometric dimensions of forehead from photographs taken at varying angles. Materials and Methods: Two-hundred Yoruba subjects (10-30 years) were photographed and the following anthropometric parameters; 90° (FH90°), forehead height at 45°Right (FH45°R), forehead height at 45°Left (FH45°L), forehead width at 90° (FW90°), forehead width at 45°right (FW45°R) and forehead width at 45°left (FW45°L) was measured. It indirectly reflects the volume of the brain and predicts mental ability. The aim of this research is to asses, compare and contrast sexual dimorphism in craniometric parameters and its relationship to intelligence, among Igbos resident in Enugu state. Materials and method: Two hundred and seventy-five (275) persons (148 males 127 females) aged 16-34 years were randomly selected. Cranial dimensions (cranial length, width and height) and weight and height of the individuals were taken and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient and chi square test of independence. Result: Cranial capacity has no significant correlation with intelligence quotient for all subjects (p>0.05). The male subjects in our cohort were observed to have higher cranial length, breadth, height, cranial capacity and intelligence quotient than the females. Conclusion: Findings from this study show that sexual dimorphism exists in craniometric parameters and there is no significant relationship between craniometric parameters and intelligence quotient among Igbos resident in Enugu metropolis. The findings from this study could aid forensic facial reconstruction and portrait sculpture. Hence, it would be found useful by the maxillofacial and plastic surgeons and even forensic experts.

This study was aimed at assessing, sexual dimorphism in auricular anthropometric parameters. Method: 514 subjects (16-30 years) comprising 258 males and 256 females were selected using simple random sampling technique. Total ear length (TEL), Total ear width (TEW), Total lobe width (TLW), Total lobular height (TLH) at 90o, 45o left and 45o right were measured and analyzed. Results: Males were observed to have higher TEL, TEW parameters than females at all angles, Females were also observed to have a longer TLH than males at 90o, 45o left and 45o right for both sides of the ear: All measured parameters in both sex showed higher values on the right side than the left, right lobular index was also found to be statistically higher (P < 0.05) when compared to the left one Conclusion: TEL and TEW measured from all angle are correlated and can be used to determine sex. It can also aid biological profiling, facial recognition from security cameras, planning of cosmetic surgery and product design for specific consumer auricular requirements.

A wide range of effect of nicotine has been reported in humans and several target organs. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of N. tabacum leaf smoke on sperm parameters of adult male wistar rats. Methods: Total 36 male wistar rats (220 to 250 g) were used for the study. The experiment involved three stages: stage 1 lasted for 1 week, stage 2, a period of 2 weeks and stage 3, a period of 4 weeks. The rats were randomly divided into three groups (1, 2 and 3) with 12 rats in each group, and subgroups (A, B, C and D) of 3 rats in each group. Subgroups A served as a control, subgroups B, C, and D were the experimental groups. Rats in subgroups A were exposed to 0.5 g of sterile cotton wool smoke, subgroups B, C and D were exposed to 0.2 g/kg bw, 0.4 g/kg bw and 0.8 g/kg bw of N. tabacum dry leaf smoke, respectively, mixed with 0.5 g of sterile cotton wool. Results-Our results showed that doses of 0.4 and 0.8 g/kg bw of the extract increased significantly the percentage, abnormal motility (P&lt;0.05) from 30.5±1.0 at the end of week 1 (1 st stage) to 65.6±0.8 at the end of week 4 (3 rd stage), while the sperm concentration was significantly decreased (P&lt;0.01) from 347.5±43.1 (ml-1) at week 1 to 107.5±2.00 for the week 4. There was decrease in spermatogonic cells at doses of 0.4 g/kg bw and 0.8 g/kg bw (4 th week). Conclusion-N. tabacum smoke extract could adversely affect the fertility of adult male wistar rats in a dose-and time-dependent manner.
