Timey-wimey goodness!

I've been recording a bunch of "Doctor Who" episodes just to watch when there's nothing else on, and I was looking through the list to decide which ones to keep, and some of the ones I kept to watch again still enthrall me for various reasons:

* "Fires of Pompeii" - Donna's empassioned speech to convince the Doctor to save just one person.
* "The Doctor's Daughter" - Because, you know, JENNY OMG!
* "Journey's End" - Saying goodbye to Donna, so sad. :(
* "Vincent and the Doctor" - Because, you know, VINCENT VAN GOGH OMG!
* "The Doctor's Wife" - Because, you know, IDRIS IS THE TARDIS IN HUMAN FORM OMG!
* "School Reunion" - Because, you know, SARAH JANE OMG!
* "Midnight" - Just creepy as fuck.
* "The Next Doctor" - Because, you know, MISS HARTIGAN OMG (and steampunk Cyber King)!

Love this show. :)

Mutant superpower, away!

The guidance counselor on "Bob's Burgers" was the guy who did Nudar on "Futurama" and Steve on "Brickleberry," which also turns out to be David Herman, who played Michael Bolton in "Office Space" (who has done a *lot* of voice acting). Damn mutant superpower...

Comics ahoy!

A new comic book and pop culture store, Third Eye Comics, just came to town and had their grand opening today. I know the manager from the comic store we used to game in, so I stopped by. It's a great store, and they're encouraging people to game at the new gaming store down the street (where my group plays now). They were having sales so I bought Pirate Fluxx and a Dalek. :)

As useful as Aquaman

Superpower strikes again! A minor character in "American Dad" was voiced by the same actor as a minor character in "Avatar." Also, Brian Doyle-Murray.

And life chugs along

Things learned this weekend:
* I will always cry when Lal dies.
* "Amadeus" is still my favorite film.
* Gay bars have turned into places for hanging out with friends.
* I'm jonesing for the new "Doctor Who."
* My kitties are big wussies.
* I'm broke.

Tough choice

Seth Macfarlane on the Oscars or Patrick Troughton's "Tomb of the Cybermen?" Decisions, decisions...

But I know what's coming. So sad. :(

Obama. Barack Obama.

Hmmmm... State of the Union or "Octopussy?" Hello, Roger Moore... ;)

I'll pay attention to highlights like this one, though:

"It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country – the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or who you love."

Ah, there's my president. :)

Downton Who?

Although it was great fun watching William Hartnell in "Doctor Who" on Sunday, I was flipping over to "Downton Abbey" quite a bit. Although I already knew the plotlines, I found a hilarious summary online and had to share this bit (no spoilers, really):

"So, while Cousin Isabel is home eating Ethel’s oven gristle and Hot Pockets, the rest of the Crawleys are at Downtown Arby’s celebrating the impending birth of Sybil and Branson’s wee babe with Doctor Lord Flipcup Tapwater. Old Man Clarkson is there as well at the insistence of Lady Elizabeth McGovern, though Dr. Lord Tapwater and Earl Grantham were in agreement that the aged quack ought to be kept out of the birthatorium."

A fun-filled weekend

Interesting weekend:

Friday - Had some trouble getting home in the snow (should have left work earlier but didn't realize it had come down as hard as it did so quickly), but was amused watching others who clearly had no idea how to drive in bad weather (although being stuck at the bottom of the hill watching them keep sliding back down, the amusement didn't last for long). Got an unexpected phone call later Friday night from a visiting friend (WB), but the snow had stopped and the roads had been plowed so I braved going out to get together for a bit.

Saturday - Was unexpectedly and annoyingly blown off by a friend to attend an AFW dinner together, but I decided to deal with it another day and went by myself and had a splendid time. Always a fun bunch of guys, plus 3 new people showed up, so it was fun meeting and chatting with them, and the food was excellent (Busara Thai in Tysons Corner, if you're looking for a decent restaurant on the west side of the DC loop). Afterwards some folks wanted to go to the Korean spa, but others wanted to go to Secrets, so I got talked into going (especially since two of the other guys going had never been before, so I knew it would be amusing to watch them). Naked men, dicks swinging, blah blah blah, but the music was good and the crowd was nice, so I enjoyed it for a while.

Sunday - Met two co-workers for lunch to catch up on all the latest gossip on campus. Ran some errands afterwards, but made it home in time to watch Obama and Clinton's "60 Minutes" interview, then "Downton Abbey," then some old school "Doctor Who" (Hartnell in "The Aztecs" - man she was a cranky bitch!).

Monday - We'd decided to have a little birthday breakfast at work as we had a few January birthdays, so I was going to get up earlier than usual, but then I got a phone call (rather late in the morning - 7:00 a.m., when we usually get a call no later than 6:00 a.m.) saying we were opening at 9:20 due to the sleet/rain mix we got, so I slept in a bit longer before getting up, getting ready, and stopping at Panera's for bagels. Still had a nice breakfast, though - enjoying a French toast bagel right now, actually. :)

So a pretty full weekend. I find that by going out and doing something Friday night it really makes the weekend feel like a weekend, but this weekend I had more than usual on my plate. This week is supposed to be quiet, though, and no plans for next weekend so far. :)

Oh so British!

Being home sick all day yesterday I caught the majority of "Downton Abbey" on PBS. Rather good...

A birthday wish

Dear BBC America,

Today is my birthday. I have taken the day off from work. I fucking HATE "Top Gear." Please remove it immediately and replace it with a day long marathon of "Doctor Who" or "Star Trek."

Thank you.

Another "Babylon 5" loss...

Taking a moment to remember The One That Was. Michael O'Hare, You will be missed.

Another one?

Oh crap. New fandom. May be my first live action OTP. May also be my first RPS. I still blame Stuart.

DW geekery

OK, this gave me chills...

Progress!

Waiting until after dinner to turn on the TV makes for an amazingly productive day.

Thank you Ken Burns from rescuing me from "Loiter Squad."

Writer's Block: Universal Trek

Star Trek has been a cultural phenomenon for decades, from TOS Kirk chewing up the scenery to reboot Kirk sky-diving from orbit. Why do you think this show has captivated so many viewers, both young and old? Do you wish the Trek vision of the human race's future would come true?

YES MOAR PLZ. :)

First of all, the day they start beta-testing transporters, I'll be first in line. Scatter my molecules to the wind, so long as I can sleep later before getting to work. :D

Second, although the shows have their faults to be sure, I can't disagree with the romanticized version of the universe - diversity, equality, education, the elimination of poverty and other human ills, etc., not to mention the inherent scientific achievement. I'll take that kind of boring universe over this one any day, thanks.

Third, and I think this has been part of the reason of why some shows did better than others, the characters have substance and are well-created. Star Trek is science-fiction, yes, but also drama, and with good drama, you can lure in more viewers that wouldn't necessarily watch an SF show. This is also why other SF shows like Battlestar Galactica and did well when other "genre" shows might not have.

So, yeah, sign me up. :D

Stupid TV

WTF is up with this new crop of "watch how stupid we are" comedy shows? Loiter Squad, now Eric Andre. At least Jackass gave us nutshots, but these are the opposite of funny. It's like watching Stuart from Mad TV, except they're doing it on purpose.
Finally getting around to setting up my old TiVo. So far so good, although I think I may have accidentally fried the one I reappropriated from my mother (which means I lost out on a dual tuner, but oh well). If all goes well the next step is to rearrange the room so I can watch TV from both the couch and my bed, which will consist of the rest of my weekend methinks.

Such a dork

Good heavens I love "Star Trek." Every time I see it I am stunned at how well they cast everyone - Bones, Scotty, Spock, amazing. I can't wait for the next one.
What TV show (past or present) do you think got off to a great start but then went the most off the rails? What would you have changed to keep the derailment from happening?

Earth: Final Conflict. Never should have gotten rid of Boone, never should have made the 5th season. UGH.
Ready, set, engage -- who gets your vote for the best Star Trek captain? What is it about them that puts them at the top of the list?

So torn, but I think I'm going with Janeway. I loved watching her struggle mightily with the decision to keep heading home instead of giving up and settling down in the Delta Quadrant, even when her crew seemed ready to mutiny over it. She sought input from all her staff, but the decision was always hers, and she took full responsibility for it, even when it didn't go all that well.

Now these are things all the captains did, I suppose, but with Janeway, she wasn't afraid to let her guard down. She had real feelings, and actually expressed them from time to time. She also didn't have any problems showing the people around her how much she cared for them, even when she had to switch gears and be a hardass to them. Out of all the series, theirs truly was the most of a family, since they were all stuck together on the same ship for years on end with zero other people of their own race to interact with. She was tough *and* tender, compassionate *and* stern, and held that balance with a lot of heart and strength.

In some ways, I liked Sisko for the same reasons - he was a hell of a leader and demanded the best from his people and got it because of the respect he earned. Sometimes, though, when he finally got around to expressing himself, it came off as "the dam has finally burst" dramatic.

Picard and Kirk? Apples and oranges, and both were tremendous in their own ways.

And Archer? I actually liked Archer, but I didn't have enough appreciation for the series to really appreciate him as a captain.

Can't... stop... watching...

Curse you "Modern Marvels" for stealing my Sunday! *shakes tiny fist*

Writer's Block: B.Y.O.B. Holidays

What is your must-see holiday movie? One random answer will win a $50 Amazon gift card. [Details here]

"Rudolph," of course! :) I usually watch a whole smattering while wrapping gifts - Charlie Brown, "Year Without A Santa Clause," "The Grinch," and, of course, "A Christmas Story." :)

"Ya USED me Skinner! Ya USED me!"

HAPPY SCOTCHTOBERFEST EVERYONE!

Cripes!

So we can make it through a HURRICANE and not lose reception, but a light sprinkle and it's blue screen of death? Fuck you, DirecTV.

In other news I stayed home again today. Not quite 100% yet.

Cue theme music

My mutant power strikes again - hello Rene Aberjenois doing a bad French accent on "Archer." :-)

Edited to add: Sorry, German, and yes that was Jeffrey Tambor voicing the Swiss guy.

Writer's Block: Leaping from the page

Which comic book character would you like to see on the silver screen? Who would you cast to play the role?

I can think of several - The Desert Peach, played by David Hyde Pierce; Sebastian O, played by Jude Law; The Flash, played by John Wesley Shipp (oh wait, they did that one); Nightwing, played by somebody really, really hot...

NPH, you're my hero!

"Broadway: It's not just for gays anymore!"

(And Brooke, we still love you, too, but girl, learn your lines!)

Homer Simpson wisdom

"I've learned that relationships succeed with forgiveness. Endless, endless forgiveness..."

Writer's Block: Behind the wheel

If you could have any vehicle (a helicopter, sports car, space ship, yacht, etc.) and a free place to park it, what would you choose, and why?

Er, yeah:

Goes without saying, really.

Farewell, Sarah Jane...

Just heard that Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith, one of the most beloved companions ever on Doctor Who, passed away today. Very, very sad - by all accounts she was a lovely woman who embraced fandom and never regretted being involved in it. She will be missed.

Life and stuff

I suppose I should stop grousing about how no one updates their LJ and update mine once in awhile, huh? :P (And no, I'm not spending all my time on Facebook like some of you other turncoats.)

The weekend was good. Friday night we had another date night and went up to Waldorf. We were going to go to Red Lobster (Lent and all), but it was packed, so we went to Mimi's instead, which was a good choice - I got the dijon brie chicken, and he got something with shrimp. (One thing the waitress couldn't explain is why a restaurant with a French New Orleans theme chose to label its special menu "Price Fixed." WTF?) Afterwards we saw "Rango," which was extremely well done and I liked it more than I thought I would, and Johnny Depp was as creative and enjoyable as I usually find him to be.

Saturday we spent the day cleaning like mad, and then some friends who needed some serious decompression from life came over. Much drinking and noshing and "RuPaul's Drag Race" watching ensued, followed by an abrupt time change. It was good to see everyone and get a chance to let off some steam.

Sunday consisted of major amounts of sloth.

This week's been quiet, as it's spring break. My boss was out yesterday, so a good day to relax and catch up. Alas, Q's brakes were making noise, so I was up way wicked early this morning to meet him at the mechanic to drop off his car on his way home from, and my way going to, work. (Turns out we need both rear brake pads and rotors, so good call on my part.)

It's a short week for me, as the college graciously gives us Friday off (whoopee), then we leave for Sacramento next Wednesday - w00t.

Oh, and why is everyone hating on cats today? Back off, or I'll shred your face. :P (For the record, we own two, but we also love dogs and are looking forward to being able to have one someday.)

So, anything snoo with you? :)

GIP

It's a still of Steve Ward from Tough Love reacting to a particularly screwed up woman. I'd been meaning to do this one for a while, because I think it's suitable for any of my WTF entries. I do miss that show, although You're Cut Off is working for the moment. :)

Maybe there's some kryptonite in my tea...

OK, I'm not sure if my mutant power is failing me or not, so I need some help, internet pals. Who did the voice of Santa in the Family Guy "Road to the North Pole" Christmas special? I'm thinking it's Bruce McGill, but the singing was pretty darn good and I'm not sure if that's part of his repetoire or not.

Mmm, breakfast!

Things I Should Not Have Bought But Did:

A HUGE "SUPER mix" bag of Halloween candy, including Kit Kats, Heath bars, Milk Duds, Rolos, and Resse's Pieces. The Pieces will be donated to the community candy dish downstairs, but the rest are for MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and MEEEEEEEEEEEEE only (we'll be away over Halloween weekend, and we don't get any kids anyway, so it's more - in fact, ALL - for MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE).

Also, GIP.

Today

I am less than threeing the rain, as the sound of it makes me happy and calm.

I am not less than threeing last-minute event logistical changes. Fortunately I have good street cred on campus and people jump through hoops for me the few times I beg a favor. Hooray for being diplomatic and politic at work.

Got a lot done last night - litter boxes, vacuum, laundry, talked to Mom, and watched the latest Ken Burns documentary. Still need to organize some stuff, put some other stuff away, go food shopping, return something, and do one little repair item, but it's doable, as Q is going out tonight with the boys.

And my sister might be coming down next weekend. Yayzers.

Little Known Yurt Fact!

Apparently, yurts can be found on the Lifetime Channel.

Just happened to be watching the first episode of "On The Road with Austin and Santino" (two alums of "Project Runway" who are touring the country bringing fashion to the masses), and although the show itself looks tedious, the pair start off using two yurts as both living quarters and workspace (and they are some HUGE yurts - easily 30-40 feet across and more than 6 feet tall).

Little known yurt fact: when yurts are young they all secretly want to star in a Broadway show with Elaine Stritch and Len Cariou, then outgrow the urge as they reach adulthood.

WTF?

OMFG I WILL NEVER EVER EVER GET SATELLITE TV AGAIN EVER.

Weeping Angel costume FTW!

Some of you may have seen this before as it's almost 2 years old, but it recently got posted to my local SF fan group's list and I thought it was just brilliant:

Read more...Collapse )

Not only did she make this outstanding Weeping Angel costume for DragonCon, but she also helpfully included step-by-step instructions, including in-progress photos (and a final picture of her scaring and attacking Jewel Staite from Firefly). If anyone's ever interested in doing such a project, definitely check out the thread here:

Just, um, don't blink. :)

Today and stuff

Today I start my summer work schedule of 9-hour days and every other Friday off. I did it last summer, but had enough comp time to take every Friday off, so I won't get quite the same reward this year. Still, I have a lot of vacation time, so if I really need to, I'm good. Mom's coming to visit on Thursday for the weekend, so that'll be fun, too.

Otherwise had a fun weekend - gaming with the locals on Friday, then went to visit Sev and Matt all day Saturday for a late celebration of Sev's birthday. We gamed a bit, had some really good Japanese for dinner, then watched the latest Doctor Who. Sunday was spent sleeping in and being generally slothful, but that's not news. :)

Scored another one

Took me a couple of rewinds on the TiVo, but I managed to figure out that the voice of the Dean of the Academy of Dirty Jokes on Family Guy was the actor who played Gul Dukat on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Weirdest. Superpower. EVER.

"Mother Theresa is Hitler!"

Lewis Black reveals Glenn Beck's "Nazi Tourettes." It's a tragic condition that afflicts... well, just Beck, actually. "More swastikas than The History Channel!" :)

OK, watched it, so...

OK, so he still needs some time, and he's trying just a smidge too hard, but he'll get there just like every actor before him. I just hope and pray he doesn't become the "SQUEE FANGIRL!!!!!!!" Doctor. Ugh. And so far I like Amy, too, though I hope they push her more towards the Donna/Sarah Jane side of companionship rather than the Rose side. BLEH HATE BLEH. The ten Doctors montage was lovely, too. Oh, and he needs to NOT use "Geronimo" as some kind of catchphrase. No no no no no. Stop that RIGHT NOW.

Otherwise, yeah, liked it well enough. :)
