The internal competitive advantage of adventure tourism operators: An exploratory approach

This article, in the field of the strategic management, addresses specifically with the competiti... more This article, in the field of the strategic management, addresses specifically with the competitiveness of tourism firms. It aimed to analyze the perception of companies operating in adventure tourism in Portugal, focusing on the factors that provide them a competitive advantage, through the lens of a Resource-Based View (RBV) approach. Semiestructured interviews were conducted with 38 Adventure Tourism Operators (ATO). These ATOs were able to identify a wide range of factors that, in their perception, can provide internal competitive advan- tage, Human Resources being the most mentioned factor. It was noticed that the focus of competitive advantage relies mainly on Resources and Operational Capabilities. Dynamic Capabilities are not frequently referred by firms. Due to the characteristics of this sector in Portugal, we concluded that achieving competitive advantage in Adventure Tourism must be difficult and that these ATOs are in competitive parity.
Management implications: This article focuses on competitiveness in Adventure Tourism Operators (ATO) in Portugal, a subject that we considered under studied, more specifically, in the internal perspective of competitive advantage. The results highlight that ATOs effectively recognize some competitive advantage factors, but these are mainly based on resources and operational capabilities that are not rare or inimitable. Considering that Adventure Tourism is a predominantly service sector, competitive advantage might rely on the improvement of dynamic capabilities in order to make firms able to better explore their resources and develop dynamic com- petences, like innovation, partnership development and strategic thinking.

Escola Superior de Desporto de Rio Maior (ESDRM), integrada no Instituto Politécnico de Santarém.
Fruto da experiência profissional de um treinador e professor de Surf e constituindo-se como mais
uma etapa da sua formação académica na área do desporto, este relatório resume todos os objetivos,
metodologias e orientações deste estágio realizado no ano letivo de 2013/ 2014 no Centro de Alto
Rendimento de Surf de Peniche (CARSP), com a orientação da Câmara Municipal de Peniche (CMP)
e da Escola Superior de Desporto de Rio Maior (ESDRM).
Este estágio teve como base a fundamentação de um projeto multidisciplinar de dinamização do Surf
em Peniche, o planeamento de uma estratégia de ação para o CARSP e a implementação de
projetos distintos na operacionalização das atividades deste centro e da Câmara Municipal de
Peniche. Os projetos desenvolvidos serão posteriormente descritos neste documento de forma
detalhada e são reunidos em grandes grupos:
a) Play Surf;
b) Estágios de Surf;
c) Papoa – Big Wave Project;
d) Guia dos Spots de Surf de Peniche;
e) Intervenção Peniche Surfing Clube;
f) Formação e Intervenção Complementar;
g) Relação com a Comunidade.
Todo o processo de preparação, enquadramento e implementação destas atividades irá ser descrito
neste relatório de estágio salientando desde já que os seus objetivos se projetam para além deste
ciclo de formação.

The International Surfing Association (ISA) defines surfing as all wave riding activities on any ... more The International Surfing Association (ISA) defines surfing as all wave riding activities on any type of waves and all flat water activities using wave riding equipment. As there are several wave riding sports, this work addresses the teaching methodology of those sports in which we paddle and move in the sea lying down on our surfboard and surf the waves standing up, as happens in shortboarding or longboarding. As a relatively recent sport, surfing still lacks a consensual teaching methodology, motivated above all by the reduced amount of existing research that supports the systematization of the approach to techniques and that supports all coaches’ decisions during the teaching process. Following this line of reasoning, this study proposes a systematization of a progressive organization to the approach to surfing initiation. The methodology of this work involved the identification of all the techniques to be mastered until the end of the beginner level and their organization into different teaching phases, each phase characterized by different objectives, adaptations, and techniques. Three major phases have been identified: Adaptation Phase, White Waves Phase, and Green Waves Phase. These phases are further divided into sub-phases that in some cases are repeated but in different environments. Its operationalization begins with the first phase of differentiated adaptation to the environment and equipment, passing through the pedagogical approach of surfing in flat surface (white waters) and ending with the transition to the outside and the complexity of the unbroken waves. With this proposal, we intend to present the methodology of organization of the contents that best adapts to the majority of practitioners. Knowing that each coach has his way of working, this work presents a model that is flexible and seeks to emphasize the discussion and deeper investigation of the various tasks inherent to the practice of surfing.
