The system consists of a computationally intensive offline part and an online interface. The offline part aims at the extraction of primitive image features, their compression, and data reduction, the generation of a completely unsupervised image content-index, and the ingestion of the catalogue entry in the database management system. Then, the user's interests-semantic interpretations of the image content-are linked with Bayesian networks to the content-index. Since this calculation is only based on a few training samples, the link can be computed online, and the complete image archive can be searched for images that contain the defined cover type. Practical applications exemplified with different remote sensing datasets show the potential of the system.

The access to such sources of information, their consultation, is required by rn.ore and more professionals. T ools like persona! cornputers and high speed networks to connect to on--line catalogues and bibliographic collecrions are easily available. It aims to provide a seamless and harmonised access to heterogeneous Earth observation (EO) datasets from multiple mission ground segments. To achieve this goal of interoperability, the HMA project is developing standardised metadata descriptions at collectionand product-level, as well as standardised network service interfaces for data discovery, ordering, planning, user management, and data access. These interfaces will be implemented in the EO Data Access and Integration Layer (DAIL), providing an integrated, harmonised access across multiple mission ground segments.

Preliminary analysis of the data recorded in both Rome and Beijing shows strong amplitude scintillations. Results of spectral analysis of these data seem to confirm low elevation experimental results obtained from other satellites. Plots of spectral density, time behavior, and log amplitude power spectra are given.

The paper explains how the adoption of readily available XML-based Web standards and protocols in an open environment can facilitate the integration. 1. The Integration Problem Ongoing efforts to broaden the European EO market highlight the need for EO services and “information products” closer to customer expectations and processes (easily understandable and ready-to-use without further manipulations). Today the transformation from basic products (e.g. images) into information is performed by a small number of specialised companies operating independently in specific application domains. This separation increases costs and leads to a time consuming process, which prevents the optimization of allocated resources. The problem limits the deployment of cost effective EO services, in particular wh...

Ongoing efforts to broaden the European EO market highlight the need for EO services and “information products” closer to customer expectations and processes (easily understandable and ready-to-use without further manipulations). In general terms there is the need to move from a “data” or “product” centric vision of EO ground segments to a ”service” oriented approach. Today the lack of an integrated, transparent and service oriented infrastructure adds a further barrier to the transformation from basic EO products (data, images) into information and services. This transformation is performed by a relatively small number of specialised companies operating independently in specific application domains. This separation increases costs and leads to a time consuming process, which prevents the optimisation of allocated resources. Furthermore the exploit...

The project addresses emerging methods and tools for data product features and information extraction, in view of possible implementations for enriching data description and easing the use of archived data[1]. For this purpose, a number of EO data exploitation scenarios are being implemented to test the possibility of systematically extracting EO product features and demonstrate the usefulness of the performed feature extraction in the data selection process, both for the scientist and for the users of EO products. The project has selected to implement feature extractors for forest mapping, urban mapping, algal blooms and flood mapping. The entire EO archives from optical and SAR sens...

The presence of the transmitting and receiving Butterworth filters, the multipath transmission channel as well as the thermal noise are all considered. A channel model with a two parameters transfer function is assumed.

The conceptual architecture has been proposed to be used for a semantic representation of the informative content of a collection of documents and for the organisation of the document collection itself. The hypertext environment is based on a set of functions that permits one to exploit the potential capabilities of the two-level architecture. Those functions are presented in detail. The paper reports some results of a more general project whose final goal is the definition of a new model for information retrieval: a model with information retrieval capabilities embedded within a hypertext environment. Finally, an outline is presented of the characteristics of a prototype, named HYPERLINE, of the hypertext environment. This prototype has been developed by the Information Retrieval Service of the European Space Agency (ESA-IRS)
