Introducción
La acuaponía es una técnica de cultivo de doble propósito donde el componente principal es el
agua que por medio de la acuicultura se crían peces y con el agua residual como nutrientes
para el cultivo de diversas hortalizas bajo un mismo sistema de producción esta aportará el
fertilizante y alimento proteínico, a la vez que en el ámbito de la producción hortícola se puede
elegir una amplia gama de productos
Este sistema simbiótico es una alternativa viable para su uso en los hogares tanto en las zonas
urbanas como en las zonas rurales como cultivos de traspatio garantizando la seguridad
alimentaria y contribuyendo con el ingreso familiar.
La acuaponía representa no solo una fuente completa de alimentos de alta calidad, sino
también una oportunidad para el ser humano y mejorar las condiciones socioeconómicas,
contribuyendo a la vez con la seguridad alimentaria.

Antecedentes
La acuaponía ha sido utilizada desde tiempos antiguos, los Aztecas
cultivaban
en islas agrícolas conocidas como chinampas. Estas islas eran creadas
en
Lagunas. Las plantas de estas islas eran alimentadas con los
nutrientes
disponibles en la laguna, y eran una parte importante de la nutrición
de los
Aztecas.
En el sur de China y en Tailandia se acostumbraba cultivar arroz en
campos
inundados en combinación con peces.
En la isla de Barbados se desarrolló una iniciativa para crear sistemas
acuapónicos en las casas, como una manera de reducir la
