¿Qué es el Sida/VHI?
El virus de inmunodeficiencia humana
(VIH) es el virus que causa el síndrome de
inmunodeficiencia adquirida (sida). Cuando
una persona se infecta con VIH, el virus
ataca y debilita al sistema inmunitario. A
medida que el sistema inmunitario se
debilita, la persona está en riesgo de contraer
infecciones y cánceres que pueden ser
mortales. Cuando esto sucede, la enfermedad
se llama sida. Una vez que una persona tiene
el virus, este permanece dentro del cuerpo de
por vida.
Causas
El virus se propaga (transmite) de una persona a otra a través de ciertos fluidos
corporales:
Sangre
Semen y líquido preseminal
Fluidos rectales
Fluidos vaginales
Leche materna
El VIH se puede diseminar si estos fluidos entran en contacto con:
Membranas mucosas (dentro de la boca, el pene, la vagina, el recto)
Tejido dañado (tejido que ha sido cortado o raspado)
El torrente sanguíneo por inyección
El VIH no se puede diseminar a través del sudor, la saliva o la orina.
En los Estados Unidos, el VIH se disemina principalmente:
A través del sexo anal o vaginal sin usar condón con alguien que tenga VIH que no
tome medicamentos para tratar o prevenir el VIH
Por medio de compartir agujas u otro equipo usado para inyectarse drogas con
alguien que tiene VIH

Síntomas:
Hay varios síntomas del VIH. No todos tendrán los mismos síntomas. Depende de la
persona y de la etapa de la enfermedad en la que se encuentre.

Diagnóstico:
Con una prueba de ácido nucleico, el proveedor
de atención médica le sacará sangre de una vena y
enviará la muestra a un laboratorio para su
análisis. La prueba puede indicar si la persona
tiene el VIH o la cantidad de virus presente en la
sangre (prueba de carga viral de VIH).
Tratamiento
Actualmente, no existe una cura para el VIH ni el SIDA. Una vez
que tienes la infección, tu cuerpo no puede deshacerse de ella. Sin
embargo, hay muchos medicamentos que pueden controlar el VIH y
evitar complicaciones.
El tratamiento antirretrovial (TAR) consistente en el uso de
medicamentos contra el VIH para tratar con dicha infección
El TAR se recomienda para todas las personas con el VIH
Las personas con VIH deben empezar lo más pronto posible
con el tratamiento TAR
CASO:
Minsa: Perú redujo la mortalidad por VIH/sida en casi 40% en los
últimos diez años
El Ministerio de Salud indicó que el país se convirtió en uno de los países con mayor cobertura de
tratamiento y mejores resultados en este campo.
El Ministerio de Salud (Minsa) informó que el Perú se convirtió en uno de los países con mayor cobertura de
tratamiento para las personas viviendo con VIH/sida, logrando reducir la mortalidad en casi 40% en los
últimos diez años. El sector indicó que este avance se debe al esfuerzo conjunto con las agencias de
cooperación internacional y la sociedad civil organizada. El doctor Carlos Benites Villafane, director
ejecutivo de la Dirección de Prevención y Control de VIH-sida, Enfermedades de Transmisión Sexual y
Hepatitis del Minsa, manifestó que a la luz de los avances científicos, el VIH ya no es necesariamente una
enfermedad mortal. “El Perú tiene una alta cobertura de tratamiento (80% de las personas viviendo con
VIH), lo cual ha permitido reducir significativamente la mortalidad, así como las nuevas infecciones”, se lee
en un comunicado. Detalló que en países como Chile, Argentina y Brasil, las nuevas infecciones
por VIH tienen hoy una tendencia a incrementarse, todo lo contrario ocurre en el Perú, donde se redujo en
un 17%, debido a las diversas estrategias preventivas y al acceso temprano al tratamiento antirretroviral de
gran actividad (TAR), que se vienen impulsando desde el Minsa. Una medida de alto impacto que se
promueve es el uso correcto del preservativo. “El Minsa implementa estrategias para hacer llegar
preservativos, particularmente a poblaciones que tienen mayor riesgo. En el país, tenemos estrategias
diferenciadas y focalizadas dirigidas hacia las poblaciones donde la incidencia es mayor”, refirió Benites.
Añadió que es indudable el impacto que ha tenido la pandemia sobre los servicios de prevención y atención
del VIH, en especial sobre las estrategias que se venían implementando en los espacios comunitarios. “Sin
embargo, se ha conseguido garantizar el acceso al tratamiento antirretroviral para las personas viviendo
con VIH y se viene reactivando los servicios de atención diferenciada para las poblaciones en mayor
riesgo”, aclaró.
