II. Fill in the gaps with words from the previous activity.

A Planet in Trouble
There are more problems facing the environment today than at any time in the past. World
population stands at around 6 billion and by the end of the 21 st century, it may reach 8 or 10
billion. To satisfy the needs of these people, we are destroying (1)_______________ and
other natural places so that we can grow food and put up buildings. This creates
(2)_______________ of the land, sea and air, which can be very bad for the health of human
and (3)_______________ such as birds and animals.

Most scientists now agree that it has also caused (4)_______________ and this means that
the temperature of the Earth is rising. The ice at the North Pole could melt, raising sea levels
and causing serious (5)_______________.

Generally, the Earth’s weather will be worse and there will be more wind, rain and
(6)_______________. However, there are things we can do. Scientists are working to come
up with ways of making power that do not cause so much pollution. People at home can
recycle their (7)_______________ paper and glass and try to use less (8)_______________
by turning off lights, TVs and stereos when they are not using them. We could all use our
cars less and walk or use (9)_______________ more.

III. According to the previous text, what is the writer’s purpose in the text? Select

1. If you want to help local insects and birds, a really good way to do it is to let your garden
grow a little bit wild and not tidy it up too much. If you don’t want the whole garden to
be untidy, just choose one area at the back of the garden and let nature take control of it.
a) Suggest b) Remind c) Review

2. From the mid 1800s until the 1950s large cities in Britain, such as London and
Manchester, suffered every winter from thick, yellow fog. It was caused by smoke from
burning coal in homes and factories. Many people became ill from it every year.
Eventually the government passed laws to control the amount of fuel that could be burnt
in the cities and the fog disappeared.
a) Persuade b) Explain c) Warn

3. There are several ways that you can use less power in your home. First of all, if you are
cold, put on a jumper instead of turning up the heating. If you are hot, turn down the
heating rather than opening a window. Switch the TV off when you are not using it and
always buy low-energy light bulbs.
a) Recommend b) Promise c) Compare

Pay It Forward
CHAPTER 1: FROM THE DIARY OF TREVOR

I like the new teacher. I don’t know what the deal is with the other kids in my class. Even Joe, who’s
my friend. They all just stared at him like he was from outer space. At least Joe didn’t laugh when
Mr. St. Clair wasn’t looking.
And the weird thing is, I don’t think most of it was his face. I mean, it was. At first. But then he
started talking, and you could sort of feel that almost everybody got used to it. A little.
But then he wrote that assignment on the board. He wrote it in really big capital letters, like the
blackboard was yelling at us.

Man, was it ever quiet in the room.

Finally, Jaime, this girl who’s usually shy, said, “Um.
What is that?”
Mr. St. Clair said, “It’s an assignment. For extra credit.”
More silence.

This guy named Jack, who’s much cooler than me and has lots
of friends, said, “We’re supposed to change the world for
social studies class? Isn’t that a little hard?”
“You’re supposed to think of an idea that might change the
world and set it in motion. Whether or not the world actually
changes is not part of the assignment.”
“I want you to think,” Mr. St. Clair said. “The first word in
this assignment is 'think'. So far, you are arguing. Not
thinking. That said, if it feels like too much, bear in mind it’s
only for extra credit. It’s not required.”
But I already knew I was totally going to do it… I looked at my friend Joe, but he just looked totally
confused. I wondered if I was the only one who was going to give the assignment a try. And if so,
why.

But year after year, that reality changed. (3)__________ .

The glaciers have also been significantly affected. For example, there is a glacier called El
Tigre, and you can walk there. (4)__________. I went to this glacier when I was ten years

is known on social networks, but seeing it live is very shocking and very sad.

Young people are the protagonists of the fight against climate change because we were born

Bird Watching in Columbia

Luis Morales is 18 years old and comes from a tiny village in the Andes mountains in
Colombia. Until about seven years ago, one of Luis’s favourite activities was to go into the
thick forest surrounding his home to hunt and kill the wildlife, especially birds. Now,

English Department Liceo Nacional de Maipú Mr. Marcelo Allup Herrera

however, he and a group of other local youths work with an international organisation called
Wildlife World, to study and protect the birds and their environment.

Wildlife World has set up several of these groups across the area. “Information we get from
the children helps us learn how the birds and other animals use the forest, what they eat and
how best we can protect them. The project has worked very well and we hope to set up more
groups in the future,” says are leader Felipe Ramos.

Luis is the oldest and most experienced member of his group, having been a member since he
was just 11. “Before I joined, I planned to leave the village as soon as I was old enough to go
and find work in the city, like most young people do,” Luis says. “But now I want to go to
university, become a scientist and return here to carry on working to save these rare birds and
their environment. Being part of the group has had a huge effect on me.”

Luis also spends time with the younger children in the village. “There is not much to do here
after school,” he says, “so I try to involve them in our activities. As well as birds watching
and nature studies we also do drama and art. The drama has been particularly successful and
we now have a theatre group of 30 children, which tours in the area, performing different
plays.”

b) Suggesting ways to help the environment.

3. How does Luis feel about the group?

a) He is happy because he is leaving it soon.
b) He is grateful because it has changed his life.
c) He is miserable because he wants to stay longer.
d) He is worried because he wants more young people to join in.

4. According to Felipe Ramos, what is the purpose of the group?

a) To find out about the behaviour of local wildlife.
b) To teach children how to look after the environment.
c) To protect children from wild animals in the forest.
d) To collect information about how people use the forest.

5. What would Felipe Ramos say about Luis?

a) “Luis is a wonderful person and he knows so much about the birds and animals in this
forest. He is also a really great musician.”
b) “Luis has just joined us and is already very important to the group, mainly because he
is so good with the younger children.”
c) “I´m going to miss Luis when he goes away to study. But I’m delighted that he will be
back afterwards to continue his work here.”

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
READING PART 4
Read the text and questions below.
For each question, mark the correct letter, A, B, C or D.

Sports Journalist
A few years ago my newspaper sent me to China to report on the World Student Games in
Beijing. Everywhere I went I was questioned by journalism students: how much money did I
earn? How many countries had I visited? Had I met David Beckham? In China sports
reporting is seen as a dream job and Chinese students are fascinated by foreign sports
reporters.

Several years later I visited China again to write about a major motor race in Shanghai. At
the track I saw one of those former students, Jie Xeng. He was working for one of China’s
largest news agencies so I asked him about his life as a sports writer.

“Sometimes it is wonderful”, he replied, “but there is a lot of travel, a lot of stress and
sometimes sports people are not very helpful.”

Jie had discovered one of the hard truths about life as a sports writer. You might think all you
need are writing skills and a knowledge of sport. These are certainly essential, but you also
need to be prepared for any number of problems.

On that visit to Shanghai for example, the journey from my hotel to the race-track took at
least three hours, through heavy traffic. For four days, I followed racing drivers and
organisers around but they were too busy to give me more than a one-word answer. Then I
would write my report and sent it to London. When I finally got back to my hotel at night,
everything, including the restaurant, was closed.

Being a sports writer may appear to be a fantastic job but there are as many difficult
situations as there are magic moments!

7. _____ A bio g. Doing something in the same way over time.
8. _____ A niche h. Attractive and easily remembered.

IV. Read the text and choose the correct answers.

It is estimated that about 40 per cent of the world’s population use social media, and
many of these billions of social media users look up to influencers to help them decide
what to buy and what trends to follow.

So what is an influencer and how do we become one?

An influencer is a person who can influence the decisions of their followers because of
their relationship with their audience and their knowledge and expertise in a particular
area, e.g. fashion, travel or technology.
Influencers often have a large following of people who pay close attention to their views.
They have the power to persuade people to buy things, and influencers are now seen by
many companies as a direct way to customers’ hearts. Brands are now asking powerful
influencers to market their products. With some influencers charging up to $25,000 for
one social media post, it is no surprise that more and more people are keen to become
influencers too. If you are one of them, then here are five tips on how to do it.

1. Choose your niche

What is the area that you know most about? What do you feel most excited talking

English Department Liceo Nacional de Maipú Mr. Marcelo Allup Herrera

26
about? Find the specific area that you’re most interested in and develop it.

2. Choose your medium and write an interesting bio

Most influencers these days are bloggers and micro-bloggers. Decide which medium –
such as your own online blog, Instagram or Snapchat – is the best way to connect with
your followers and chat about your niche area. When you have done that, write an
attention-grabbing bio that describes you and your speciality area in an interesting and
unique way. Make sure that people who read your bio will want to follow you.

3. Post regularly and consistently

Many influencers post daily on their social media accounts. The more you post, the
more likely people will follow you. Also, ensure that your posts are consistent and
possibly follow a theme.

4. Tell an interesting story

Whether it is a photo or a comment that you are posting, use it to tell a story that will
catch the attention of your followers and help them connect with you.

5. Make sure people can easily find your content

Publicise your posts on a variety of social media, use hashtags and catchy titles and
make sure that they can be easily found. There is no point writing the most exciting
blogposts or posting the most attractive photographs if no one is going to see them.
Most importantly, if you want to become a social media influencer, you need to have
patience. Keep posting and your following will gradually increase. Good luck!

Making films at university

An increasing number of universities on both sides of the Atlantic are becoming film
locations. Many universities have fantastic buildings and there are long holidays when they
are empty. This allows film-makers a period of uninterrupted time to shoot a film.

In most cases the universities do not appear as themselves. Londoners were surprised to see
American police cars cruising around in front of the University Library, which was used as
the Gotham City police offices in all the Batman movies. London University Library is a
classic example of 1930s architecture and has become a popular location for a large number
of films and television series set in that period.

Usually the buildings are dressed up so that they cannot be recognised easily. Thirty years
ago a lecture theatre at Brunel university was used in Stanley Kubrick’s frightening film
about the future, “A Clockwork Orange.” At that time its huge grey blocks were considered
very modern. Kubrick thought that it would be perfect for the headquarters of the secret

English Department Liceo Nacional de Maipú Mr. Marcelo Allup Herrera

30
police. For three weeks there were at least 200 people on the site – electricians, carpenters,
make-up people, set builders. Everything went well until some time later, Kubrick decided he
was unhappy with his work and wanted to re-shoot some scenes. They had to go back,
rebuild the set and do the scenes again. It caused a lot of trouble as term had already started.

Oxford and Cambridge are the most popular universities with both students and film-makers
and both find it equally difficult to get into them. Some excellent films have been made
there, most recently the Harry Potter films.

Across the Atlantic, a number of actors and directors are former students of the University of
Southern California. Perhaps that is why its buildings have been used in more major films
than any other educational institution in the USA. Recently however, American films crews
have moved to Canada because of lower production costs there. The University of Toronto
has played the role of two more famous US universities – Massachusetts Institute of
Technology in “Good Will Hunting” and Harvard in “Skulls.”

Universities encourage this alternative use of their buildings and see it as a useful way of
earning some extra money. From the director’s point of view, universities make fantastic
locations for feature films, television dramas, advertisements and still photography, such as
fashion pictures.

Unfortunately, being a student at one of these universities is unlikely to be helpful for a

future career in acting. Most film shoots take place in the holidays and film-makers always
own professional actors to play students!

Lesson 4: “Conditional tenses”

Grammar

The zero conditional is used to make statements about the real world, and often refers to
general truths, such as scientific facts. In these sentences, the time is now or always and the
situation is real and possible.

If clause (condition) Main clause (result)

If + Simple Present Tense Simple Present Tense
 If you heat ice,  It melts.
 Whether you freeze water,  It becomes a solid.
 If a person doesn’t sleep,  What happens?.
*You may change the position of clauses, but the comma which divides both statements must
be deleted.
 What happens to the grass if there is no rain for a long time?
 Water becomes a solid whether you freeze it.
 Ice melts if you heat it.

The first conditional is common when talking about possible plans, promises, warnings,
threats or for persuading someone. We are predicting a likely result in the future if a
condition is fulfilled.

If clause (condition) Main clause (result)

If + Simple Present Tense Simple Future Tense

 Whether the weather wasn’t so bad,  We’d go to the park.

About 300 years ago, London was starting to get bigger. The city was very dirty and
many people were poor. There were so many thieves who stole money in the streets that
people stayed in their homes as much as possible.
In 1750, Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like
policemen and were called “Bow Street Runners” because they worked new Bow Street.
Fifty years later, there were 120 Bow Street Runners, but London had become very big
and needed more policemen. So, in 1829, the first Metropolitan (or London) Police Force
was started with 3000 officers. Most of the men worked on foot, but a few rode horses.
Until 1920 all the police in London were men.

Every year, thousands of people come to Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, to be
part of the Edinburgh Festival. For three weeks every August and September the city is
filled with actors and artists from all over the world. They come to Edinburgh for the
biggest arts festival in Britain. During this time the streets of the city are alive with music
and dance from early morning until late at night. You can even see artists painting pictures
on the streets. One of the best parts of the Festival is the “Fringe”, where the students do
comedy shows in small halls and cafés.

Tens of thousands of tourists come to the Festival to see new films and plays and hear
music played by famous musicians. This year, you can see over five hundred performances
with actors from more than forty countries.

Burglars Love The Afternoon

Most house burglaries happen between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., say the police.

Inspector Ian Saunders told our newspaper that the number of house burglaries has
gone up by more than 30% compared with last year. He also said that 67% of burglaries
happen when people have gone out and forgotten to close a door or a window.

He went on to report that night-time burglaries are unusual because families are usually
at home at that time. But he said that winter afternoons are the best time for burglars
because it is dark and they can’t be seen easily. Also many houses are empty at that time,
because people are often still at work.

Inspector Saunders said that it is a good idea to leave lights on in living rooms and
bedrooms when you go on holiday. This will help to keep burglars away. He also asked
neighbours to watch the other houses in the street when people are not at home. They
should call the police if they see anything strange. “We will also tell you how to make
your house safe,” Inspector Saunders said. “This kind of help costs nothing.”

Lesson 4: “Author’s Inference”

XXI. Read the text and questions below.
For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D.
EXERCISE CAN BE FUN!
Exercise has become a huge part of our world. There are gyms everywhere, but if you’re not
keen on them, there are hundreds of exercise videos to choose from. Exercise is good for you. It
makes you feel better, look better and can help you live longer.
But what happens if you are the kind of person who would do anything rather than spend five
minutes on a exercise bike, including cleaning the house, visiting a boring relative or watching a
terrible TV programme? If you are that kind of person, you need a plan!
First of all, decide when you are going to exercise. Choose three times a week, like me.
Write EXERCISE in your diary, on your calendar, on the wall if necessary! Then make sure you
do it. Don’t do anything else. I never make other arrangements.
Next, vary what you do. I went to the same aerobics class for two years! No wonder I was
bored! Now I use different machines at the gym, I often change my jogging route and I never do
aerobics.
Make exercise fun and find an exercise you enjoy. Why not play a sport, or join a dance
class? I recently started a modern dance class. It’s great fun and I’ve met lots of new people, but
as soon as I get bored I’ll find something else!
1. What is the writer’s main aim in writing the text?
a) To describe different ways of keeping fit.
b) To persuade people about the benefits of exercise.

d) To encourage people to take exercise.
2. What does the writer say about herself
a) She prefers to exercise at home.
b) She isn’t keen on joining classes.
c) She likes to do different kinds of exercise.
d) She doesn’t like watching TV.
3. What does the reader learn about the writer’s habits?
a) She exercises three times a week.
b) She often exercises with friends.
c) She does aerobics regularly.
d) She runs the same route every day.
4. What does she say about her dance class?
a) She sometimes finds it boring.
b) She may not do it forever.
c) She thinks some people are unfriendly.
d) She prefers doing sport.

5. What would be another good title for the article?
a) Exercise may be boring, but it’s good for you.
b) Many people do too much exercise.
c) Regular exercise is best.
d) Exercise once a week is better than nothing.

NIGHT WORK
Can you imagine what it would be like working at night? You’d start your day when
everyone else was going to bed, and you’d go to bed when everyone else was getting up. Is
that really a natural way to live?
These days more and more jobs need to be done at night. Most big hotels offer 24-hour
room service, and need staff at reception and working in the bars. Many companies have 24-
hour call centres to deal with emergency enquiries. There are 24-hour supermarkets, and of
course there are the workers for the emergency services such as fire-fighters, the police and
hospital workers.
However, few people can work well at night. This is partly because we cannot easily
change our sleeping habits. Some people can manage on as little as three hours’ sleep while
others need as many as eleven hours – You’re either a “short sleeper” or a “long sleeper”. If
working at night stops you from getting the amount of sleep you need, you will damage your
health.
The best part of the day for everyone is around lunchtime and the worst point is between 2
a.m. and 4 a.m. So if you’re driving home at this time or doing something important at work,
things are far more likely to go wrong!
Humans are used to sleeping at night and being awake during the day, and they’ll never be
able to do things the other way around. The problem is that today’s 24-hour society isn’t going
to slow down which means that night-workers will remain.

XXIII. Read the text and questions below.
For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D.

A HEALTHY MIND
The brain is the most amazing part of our body and despite all medical research nobody
really understands everything about it. But just like our bodies, it needs to be cared for in
ways that can be quite simple. Getting a good night’s sleep, eating a balanced diet and
taking deep breaths are all important methods of looking after both your body and your
brain.
Many people think their brain will slow down with age and their memory will get
worse as a result. The truth is, just like your body, you can also improve your mind. I’ve
found I can improve my memory by imagining what I need to remember. For example, if
I’m going shopping and I need bread, milk and a birthday card for my brother, I imagine a
loaf of bread, a carton of milk with a cow on the front and a birthday card with a football
on it.
The same kind of method can be used with important dates. If you have a picture in
your mind of a particular event it’s much easier to remember than just a number on a
calendar.
Another way of improving your mind is to make sure you regularly visit new places
and have new experiences. Personally I find learning Spanish is a great way t keep the
brain working, but communication in any language is important. Having a conversation is
so much better for your brain than staring at a computer screen or at other people talking
on TV.

11. What’ is the writer’s main aim in writing the text?

a) To explain how the brain works.
b) To talk about problems with the brain.
c) To describe how clever she has become.
d) To suggest the brain needs attention.

12. What does the reader learn about the writer from the text?
a) She has a computer.
b) She is learning another language.
c) She likes shopping.
d) She enjoys travelling.

13. What does the writer say about the brain?

a) It should be treated in a similar way to our bodies.
b) Not enough medical research is being done on it.
c) It definitely becomes less quick when we are older.
d) It ages faster than our bodies.

14. What does the writer say about her own memory?
a) It has been possible to make it better.
b) She finds objects more difficult to remember than numbers.
c) It has got worse over the years.
d) She often forgets birthdays.

15. What would be another title for the text?

a) Easy ways to develop your mind.
b) The latest research into the brain.
c) The amazing power of memory.
d) How to remember things you thought you’d forgotten.

XXIV. Read the text and questions below.
For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D.

LEARN INDIAN DANCING

I’ve always wanted to learn how to dance. When I was younger, I loved going to discos
and I used to spend hours practising my moves in front of the mirror! I think I was quite
good, but as I got older, I became less confident.
Recently I decided I’d join a dance class. The problem with most dance classes is that
you need a partner, and none of my male friends wanted to come with me. I was beginning
to give up on the idea when I came across a magazine article about Indian dancing. It
sounded great and best of all I could do it on my own! So, I found a class on the internet
and booked myself onto a course.
I turned up for our first lesson feeling very nervous. I needn’t have worried though
because everyone was really friendly. We were all female, the youngest was about
eighteen and the oldest was forty something.
Our teacher came in looking fantastic in her traditional dance clothes and we soon all
caught her energy and enthusiasm. She put on the music immediately which was a
combination of western pop songs se to an Indian beat, and we started following her
moves. Any nervousness soon disappeared because the moves are so complicated. There’s
no time to worry about whether you’re doing them right!
I’ve noticed a lot of changes about myself since I started dancing. I’m much fitter and I
feel more confident. I’ve also made some great friends at the class. If you’re interested in
dancing, or you just want to feel fitter, I’d recommend Indian dance!

16. What’ is the writer’s main purpose in writing the text?

a) To describe her childhood.
b) To say how she began her hobby.
c) To explain why she likes dancing.
d) To talk about the people she has met.

17. What would a reader learn about the writer from the text?
a) She is good at Indian dancing.
b) She enjoys dancing.
c) She likes listening to pop music.
d) She’s interested in keeping fit.

18. What does the writer say about herself?

a) She hasn’t always been confident.
b) She doesn’t enjoy doing new things.
c) She likes meeting people.
d) She was a very nervous child.

19. What does the writer say about the first dance class?
a) Everybody was keen to dance.
b) Nobody spoke to each other first.
c) Everybody admired the teacher.
d) A lot of time was spent discussing the moves.

20. Which advert do you think the writer found on the internet?
a) “Learn how to dance! No experience necessary! No need to bring a partner! We’ll
match you with somebody when you arrive!”
b) “Have you always wanted to learn to dance? We teach you simple steps from Latin
American to Indian dancing.”
c) “If you’re interested in dance why not learn the art of Indian dancing! Friendly
classes! Excellent teacher! Everybody welcome!”
d) “Are you bored with doing the same old things? Persuade your partner to join a dance
class! Have fun and keep fit at the same time!”
