Tag Questions
La mejor forma de iniciar una conversación es con una pregunta, ¿no?
Esa es la importancia de las question tags o tag questions.
¿Qué son y cuándo hay que usarlas? - Las question tags son elementos gramaticales que se colocan al final de una
oración en forma de pregunta corta y cuya estructura se opone a la oración anterior.
Las dos reglas principales para formar question tags son que cuando una frase es afirmativa, la pregunta es
negativa. Mientras que cuando una oración es negativa, la pregunta es positiva.
Las estructuras:
 Caso 1: Oración afirmativa + question tag negativa.
Ejemplos: -She is an artist, isn’t she? (Ella es una artista, ¿verdad?)
-You are the new employee, aren’t you? (Tú eres el nuevo empleado, ¿no?)

 Caso 2: Oración negativa + question tag afirmativa.

Ejemplos: -My wallet isn’t here, is it? (Mi cartera no está aquí, ¿o sí?)
-He doesn't work here, does he? (Él no trabaja aquí, ¿no?)
-We don't drink wine, do we? (Nosotros no tomamos vino, ¿o sí?)

Casos en los que el verbo auxiliar está explícito en la oración

1. Verbo to be en present y past continuous
She is studying, isn’t she? (Ella está estudiando, ¿no?)
They were playing basketball, weren’t they? (Ellos estaban jugando basquetbol, ¿no?)

2. Have en present y past perfect

You have tasted my cookies, haven’t you? (Tú has probado mis galletas, ¿no?)
She hadn’t spoken to my dad, had she? (Ella no había hablado con mi papá, ¿cierto?)

3. Will y modal verbs

Tomorrow will be a great day, won't it? (Mañana será un gran día, ¿no?)
You must work hard to get the award, mustn’t you?
(Tendrás que trabajar muy duro para ganarte el premio, ¿no crees?)

Casos en que el verbo auxiliar no está explícito en la oración

1. Present y past simple
She learns very fast, doesn’t she? (Ella aprende muy rápido, ¿no?
They broke my tablet, didn’t they? (Ellas rompieron mi tablet, ¿cierto?)

2. El uso de have. Tres casos de have que pueden ser confusos al momento de realizar estas preguntas:

2.1 Have, como verbo

You have my book, don’t you? (Tú tienes mi libro, ¿no?)
have funciona como verbo, no como verbo auxiliar, por lo tanto la question tag se formula con el auxiliar do.

2.2. Have to
He has to do more exercise, doesn’t he? (Él tiene que hacer más ejercicio, ¿cierto?)
Al igual que en el caso anterior, have to funciona como verbo, por lo tanto se formula la pregunta con do.

2.3 Have got

We have got some things to do, haven’t we? - (Nosotros tenemos varias cosas por hacer, ¿no?)
 En este caso la oración lleva have got (present perfect del verbo to get con el auxiliar have), por lo que la regla
que aplica es la del auxiliar explícito.

Question tags: Tips avanzados

La variedad de preguntas puede complicar la formulación de ciertas oraciones. En la siguiente lista podrás
encontrar question tags con ejemplos comunes para saber cómo enfrentarlas.
 Oración con I am
Cuando formas una oración con I am, la question tag lleva por auxiliar are/aren’t.
Por ejemplo: I am the black sheep of my family, aren’t I? (Soy la oveja negra de mi familia, ¿o no?)

 Imperativos
En las oraciones de modo imperativo es necesario usar will como auxiliar para la pregunta, independientemente
de si la oración tiene sentido positivo o negativo.
Por ejemplo: Help me do it, will you? (Ayúdame a hacerlo, ¿no?)

Oraciones con let’s

En las oraciones con let’s se utiliza como auxiliar shall.
Por ejemplo: Let’s try it again, shall we? (Vamos a intentarlo otra vez, ¿verdad?)

 Oraciones con there is y there are

En este caso, there es un pronombre que cumple la función del sujeto de la oración.
Por ende, la question tag se forma con el verbo to be y el mismo pronombre (no se cambia el pronombre).
Por ejemplo: There is oil in the floor, isn’t there? (Hay aceite en el suelo, ¿no?)

 Statements tags
Se trata de otro caso peculiar. Estas oraciones no terminan con una pregunta, sino con una afirmación.
Por ejemplo: You are too lazy, you are (Tú eres muy floja, lo eres).

 Uso de right y yeah

En ocasiones, la pregunta final de la oración se puede hacer con right o yeah, sin embargo, esto se restringe a
situaciones informales.
Por ejemplo: You don’t want the last piece of cake, right? (Tú no quieres la última rebanada de pastel,
¿verdad?).
