 How to Learn Grammar With Stories
Here is my suggested six-step process for making the most of the 30-Day Mastery series:

Read the short plot summary at the beginning of the story. This sets the context for
the story, and will help you understand what you read.

Listen to the audiobook recording of each chapter. You’ll find audio recordings of each
chapter in the folder with this PDF. It’s a good idea to listen to this before you read the
text. Focus on listening and see how much you can pick up.

Read each chapter all the way through without stopping. Your aim is simply to reach
the end of the chapter, so don’t worry if there are things you don’t understand.
Simply try to follow the gist of the story. If you get stuck, you can use the vocabulary
list at the end of the chapter to check unknown words and phrases.

Go back and read the same chapter a second time. This time, try to actively notice how
the language is used in the text. Look out for things like verb tenses and pronouns
and ask yourself questions like: “Why is this being used here?”; “What meaning does
it convey?”; and “Is there a particular form or variation being used?” Your job is to be
curious, and ask “Why?”, while staying focused on enjoying the story.

Listen and read at the same time. Next, spend some time reading the chapter and
listening to the audio at the same time. This helps you train your ear to the sounds and
flow of the language. It’s a good idea to do this multiple times.

Come back the next day! The benefits of the StoryLearning method comes from
reading and listening consistently over multiple days, not from intensive study of each
chapter. So, once you’ve completed chapter one, move on and come back again the
next day. You should follow the same process every day for the remaining chapters.

Remember, StoryLearning® works gradually, not overnight. At every stage of the process,
there will inevitably be words and phrases you do not understand or passages you find
confusing.

Instead of worrying about the things you don’t understand, try to focus instead on everything
that you do understand, and set your sights on doing a little bit every day. It’s this consistency
that will bring your lasting results!

Plot Summary

In this story, you will follow the adventures of Jordi, Lisa, and Manuel, three life-long friends
as they follow their hero, Alexis Gallo, a famous surfer across a tour of the beaches of Spain.

However, things don’t quite go according to plan. . .

 CAPÍTULO 1

Manuel
Manuel era un hombre muy ordenado. Por eso, al ver su departamento hecho un
caos, comenzó a sentirse mal.

El departamento, que era muy pequeño, estaba completamente lleno de

cajas. Las cajas eran de cartón, y Manuel estaba guardando en ellas todas sus
posesiones. Iba a mudarse a Alemania.

De pronto, cuando estaba terminando de guardar los utensilios de la cocina en

una de las cajas, oyó un sonido. Era su teléfono, que sonaba en algún sitio de
todo ese caos.

Cuando lo encontró, en el sofá, debajo de una pila de almohadones, se fijó en

quién llamaba. Era Lisa.

—¿Lisa? —dijo, al aceptar la llamada—. Ya estoy casi listo, lo juro.

—¿¡Aún no has salido de tu casa!? —le recriminó Lisa—. ¿Por qué eres tan
impuntual?

—No lo sé —dijo Manuel—. Es cierto que soy impuntual y siempre lo he sido.

Todos en mi familia son muy impuntuales.

—Vale, ¡menos charla y más acción, Manu! ¿Ya sales?

 —Sí, sí. Termino con esta caja y salgo… ¡Oh, no!

—¿Qué? —preguntó Lisa.

—¡Soy un tonto! He guardado mi traje de neopreno en una de las cajas, ¡pero no

sé en cuál!

—¡Guau! —dijo Lisa—. Realmente eres un tonto.

—¡Es que no sabía que íbamos a surfear! —exclamó.

—¿Qué? ¿Pensabas que iba a dejar que te fueras a vivir a Alemania sin
despedirnos? Eres uno de mis mejores amigos…

—Lo sé, lo sé, somos mejores amigos, pero pensé que la despedida iba a ser algo
distinta. No sé… que seríamos nosotros tres tomando unas cervezas.

—¡Claro que no! —dijo Lisa—. Seremos nosotros tres ¡surfeando! ¡Apresúrate! Nos
vemos en la playa en media hora.

—Cuarenta y cinco minutos…

—Vale… ¡cuarenta y cinco minutos! Pero no más que eso.

Lisa
Lisa cortó la comunicación con Manuel y fue hacia la mesa del café donde Lucas,
su prometido, charlaba con Ana, la planificadora de su boda. Iban a casarse en
solo dos semanas y todavía tenían muchas cosas que resolver.

No podía creer que Manuel, uno de sus dos mejores amigos, iba a perderse la
boda. Todo había sido muy repentino: le habían ofrecido un trabajo muy bueno
en Alemania, y él había aceptado. Se iba a ir a vivir a Berlín ¡al menos por tres
años!

Claro, Lisa sabía que no era tan terrible. Iban a verse seguido, seguramente.
¿Pero qué tan seguido? ¿Cuántas veces iban a viajar a Berlín para verlo?
¿Cuántas veces iba a viajar él a Zarautz para verlos a ellos? Además, ella iba a
casarse, ¡y Jordi estaba por tener un bebé!

—Amor, ¿estás escuchando? —su novio le hablaba.

—Oh, eh… Lo lamento… ¿Qué me decías? —preguntó.

Ana sostenía un libro con fotos de distintos ramos de rosas.

—Que cuál de estas crees que irá mejor con los manteles que hemos elegido —le
preguntó Lucas.

 —Oh… Uf… No lo sé, la verdad es que se ven todas… iguales, ¿no? —dijo.

Ana, la planificadora de la boda, rió incómoda.

—De todos modos —añadió Lisa—, yo ya tengo que irme. Tengo que ir a
encontrarme con Jordi y Manuel en la playa en una hora. Le he dicho a Manuel
que el encuentro es en media hora, porque ya sabes lo impuntual que es. En fin,
mejor me voy a casa a buscar mi tabla y mi traje de neopreno. ¿Por qué no te
quedas y decides tú?

—Claro, mi amor —dijo Lucas, con una sonrisa—. Ve a casa y luego ve a la playa.
No te preocupes por estas cosas, sé que no es lo tuyo. ¿Te veo más tarde en
casa?

—Sí, claro. Iré a eso de las nueve.

—Perfecto, te espero.

Jordi
Jordi todavía no procesaba del todo el hecho de que estaba por ser padre, que
había una persona creciendo dentro de Amalia, su pareja. Y esa persona ¡era su
hijo!

Cuando, en la consulta con el médico, vieron la ecografía, se sorprendió de lo

mucho que el bebé había crecido en las últimas dos semanas. Según les contó el
médico, ya pesaba tres kilos. ¡Era enorme!

Apenas salieron del consultorio, Amalia le dijo:

—¿Te ha flipado ver eso?

—Pues sí, bastante —respondió él.

—¡A mí también! —dijo ella—. Todavía no puedo creer que hayamos fabricado un
ser humano… Bueno, lo he fabricado yo, en realidad. Yo he hecho todo el trabajo
duro. ¡Tú no has hecho nada!

Jordi rio.

—Es cierto —dijo—. Oye… ¿estás segura de que no tienes problema por quedarte
sola hoy mientras voy a surfear con Manuel y Lisa?

 —Claro que no, ¡hombre! —exclamó Lisa—. No hay problema. Ve, diviértete,
tómate unas vacaciones si quieres. Pues, por algunas semanas más, no hay más
que esperar. Pero cuando este niño salga de ahí dentro, deberás estar en casa
las veinticuatro horas. ¿Está claro?

—Sí, por supuesto —dijo él, dándole un beso y ayudándola a subir a un taxi.

—Nos vemos más tarde, amor —dijo ella.

—Chau, linda, hasta luego —dijo él.

Amalia tenía razón. Por el momento, solo había que esperar. Por eso, por el día,
podría relajarse y disfrutar con sus amigos.

Sin embargo, no estaba seguro de que el día iba a ir como lo habían planeado:
casi no había olas. La playa estaba justo enfrente del hospital y podía verla
desde donde estaba. Jordi fue hasta su coche, sacó del maletero su traje de
neopreno y bajó su tabla del techo. Luego, cruzó la calle.

Había muy poca gente en la playa. Definitivamente no era un buen día para
surfear. En el sitio donde paraban siempre había alguien. Seguramente era Lisa
(¡Manuel siempre llegaba tarde!). Caminó hacia ella.

¿Es él?
Había sido un día de playa realmente mediocre.

Desde que conoció a Lisa y a Jordi (y los había conocido a los trece años), nunca
les había tocado un día de surf tan malo. Se habían metido en el agua para
probar suerte… pero conocían el mar: sabían que iba a ser imposible. Realmente
no había olas.

Claro, conocían varias otras playas en la zona a las que podían ir, pero no tenía
sentido. Allí era donde ellos se habían conocido cuando eran adolescentes, hacía
veinte años. Tenía un sentido especial hacer su despedida allí. Era simbólico.

«Aquí empezó, aquí termina», pensó Manuel.

Cuando salieron del agua, después de media hora de esperar a que se alzara
alguna ola, se tiraron en la arena a beber cervezas y charlar. Hablaron sobre el
clima, sobre los proyectos que se acercaban en sus vidas, sobre el surf...

—Desde que os conozco, siempre he tenido un sueño —confesó Manuel, de

pronto, cuando se hizo un silencio—. Me gustaría que surfeáramos los tres la
misma ola.

—Es un buen sueño —dijo Lisa—. ¿Sabes cuál es el mío?

 —¿Que vaya a comprar más cervezas? —preguntó Manuel.

—¡Oye! ¿Cómo lo sabías? —preguntó Lisa, sorprendida.

—Te conozco —dijo él.

—Claro… me conoces.

Manuel se puso de pie, tomó su billetera y comenzó a caminar hacia el pequeño

bar que había en la playa, a unos doscientos metros de donde se encontraban.
Como la playa estaba vacía, casi no había gente en el puestito. Solo había un
hombre, con pelo largo y blanco, y un traje de neopreno. Estaba bebiendo un
trago en la barra.

—¿Tres cervezas frías, Manu? —le preguntó el barman, cuando se acercó.

Facundo los conocía a él y a sus amigos desde hacía años.

—Sí, gracias, Facu —dijo él.

En ese momento, mientras el barman buscaba sus cervezas, Manuel le prestó

atención al hombre que tomaba su trago en la barra.

No podía ser… ¿O sí? ¿Era él?

—Oye… Yo te conozco —dijo Manuel.

El hombre lo miró.

Sí, era él.

El héroe
—¡No lo puedo creer! —dijo Manuel—. ¿Eres quien yo creo que eres?
El hombre frente a él sonreía.

—¡Depende! —le dijo—. ¿Quién crees que soy? No soy ni Antonio Banderas ni
Javier Bardem, si eso es lo que crees.

—¡Tú eres Alexis Gallo! —exclamó Manuel.

—¿Eso era lo que creías? —preguntó el hombre, riendo—. Sí, sí, soy yo.

Alexis Gallo le extendió la mano. Manuel lo saludó con un efusivo apretón.

—¡Realmente no puedo creerlo! —dijo Manuel nuevamente.

—Ya, ¡créelo de una vez, Manu! —dijo Facundo, el barman—. Pareces un niño, ¿qué
te sucede?

—Es que… Alexis… Este hombre... ¡es nuestro héroe! Cuando mis amigos y yo
nos conocimos —dijo, señalando en la distancia, donde estaban Jordi y Lisa—,
creo que teníamos solo trece o catorce años. ¡Éramos muy pequeños! Y nos
conocimos aquí, en esta playa, surfeando. Comenzamos a hablar porque los tres
habíamos leído el mismo artículo sobre Alexis… Bueno, ¡sobre ti! Habías salido en
la portada de Surfworld.

 —Oh, sí, ¡lo recuerdo! —dijo Alexis—. Era una gran revista. Yo era muy joven
también. Cuando me dijeron que saldría en la portada, ¡no me lo creía!

—¿Cómo que no? ¡Si ya eras fantástico! —dijo Manuel.

—¿Eso crees? —le preguntó Alexis—. No sé, creo que todavía me quedaba mucho
por aprender. Bueno, aún me queda mucho por aprender.

—Pero nosotros éramos solo unos niños, creíamos que eras una especie de dios…
un dios del mar… Neptuno.

—Así que le puse a mi marca de ropa para surfers: «Neptuno» —dijo Alexis.

—Lo sé, ja, ja —dijo Manuel—. Es la marca de mi traje —dijo, mostrándole la

etiqueta de su traje de neopreno.

—Bueno, muchas gracias por tu compra —dijo Alexis—. Oye, ¿tú eres de aquí?

—Sí, soy de aquí —dijo Manuel.

—¿Crees que el clima va a cambiar?

—No lo creo… Al menos no por hoy. Dentro de unos días, seguramente las olas se
alcen. Pero por hoy seguirá todo así.

—Era lo que creía —dijo Alexis, decepcionado.
