Bienvenidos a Cali, la ciudad con más de 560 especies de aves, siete ríos y el Parque
Nacional Natural Farallones de Cali, símbolo de nuestra biodiversidad.

Nos sentimos honrados de recibir la COP16 y con ella a miles de visitantes de tantos
lugares del mundo que estarán hablando bien de Cali.
Este evento no solo nos catapulta en el escenario internacional, representa además
una ocasión única para unirnos en un solo propósito: mostrar todo el potencial que
nos identifica y representa.
Sin embargo, la tarea no termina en enseñarle
al mundo que Cali es el lugar donde deben
estar, continua en el cuidado y acciones
que tomamos para protegerlo, para se-
guir siendo un paraíso biodiverso y res-
petuoso con esa naturaleza que nos
abraza.
Bienvenidos a Cali, donde la salsa se
escucha y baila como en ningún otro
lugar del mundo; la comida sabe a
historia y tradición; su gente saluda
en cada esquina; se respira deporte por
donde pasas y es hermoso crecer y vivir.

Welcome to Cali, a city which is home to 560
bird species, seven rivers, and Los Farallones
National Natural Park, symbol of our biodiversity.
We are honored to host the COP16 its thousands of
visitors from all over the world who I trust will be speaking well of Cali.
This event gives us a unique chance to come together with one goal: to show all
the potential that defines and represents us and places us on an international
level.
Our duty isn’t done, in showing the world that Cali is the place where they should
come to, we should also carry out actions protect this city, to remain a biodiverse
paradise respecting nature that embraces us. Welcome to Cali, where salsa is
played and danced like nowhere else in the world, where our food is the epitomy
of history and tradition; people greet you on every corner; sports are in the air
everywhere you go, and it’s a beautiful place to grow up and live.

La COP16 es un punto de inflexión para Cali. La ciudad tiene en este evento, el más
grande de biodiversidad a nivel mundial, una oportunidad enorme para construir
varios legados: la internacionalización de Cali, su reivindicación como ciudad capital
y su consolidación como epicentro biodiverso de Colombia.
Cali abre sus puertas con orgullo para mostrar que en ella las posibilidades no
conocen límites, que aquí se puede sembrar, cultivar, crecer, recoger y germinar.
El turismo de naturaleza regenerativo,
médico, deportivo, cultural y comunitario
son las banderas que izamos alto y fuerte
en Cali hacia el mundo. Sin importar de
donde nos visiten, queremos que se

COP16 is a turning point for Cali. The
city hosts the largest biodiversity event in
the world. This is an enormous opportunity
to build several legacies: the internationalization of Cali, its vindication as a capital
city and its consolidation as the biodiversity epicenter of Colombia.
Cali proudly opens its doors to show that here possibilities know no limits that
here you can sow, cultivate, grow, harvest and germinate.
Several forms of tourism such as: regenerative nature tourism, medical, sports,
cultural and community are the flags that we raise high and strong in Cali to the
world. No matter where you come from, we want you to fall in love with this green
treasure turned into a salsa, medical and sports capital.
Explore, feel, and most of all, let yourself be amazed by everything Cali has to

Cali, reconocida internacionalmente como la ‘Capital Mundial de la Salsa’,

seduce a sus visitantes con su vibrante energía y su inquebrantable pasión
por este género musical. La salsa es más que una simple expresión artística;
es parte esencial de la identidad caleña, impregnando cada rincón de la
ciudad, desde las academias de baile hasta los animados clubes nocturnos y
los festivales que llenan las calles de ritmo y alegría. Sin embargo, Cali ofrece
mucho más que su icónica escena salsera.
Con su clima cálido y su rica herencia histórica, Cali es una explosión de culturas
en donde indígenas, afros, mestizos, mulatos y blancos se han mezclado
durante siglos, dándole a la ciudad una identidad única que se refleja en sus
manifestaciones artísticas, gastronómicas, musicales y creativas en general. Y si
además le sumamos el entorno natural, con ecosistemas
que van desde el bosque seco tropical hasta las

selvas húmedas y páramos, los 7 ríos que la atraviesan, sus más de 560 especies
de aves, 93 especies de anfibios y más de 1.000 especies de árboles, orquídeas,
bromelias y helechos, la ciudad también podría ser llamada la ‘Capital de la
Biodiversidad’.
Todos estos elementos hacen de Cali un destino vibrante y lleno de experiencias 11

Cali, known worldwide as the ‘World Capital of Salsa’, captivates its visitors
with its vibrant energy and unwavering passion for this musical genre.
Salsa is more than just an artistic expression; it is an essential part of the
caleño identity, permeating every corner of the city, from dance academies
to lively nightclubs and festivals that fill the streets with rhythm and joy. But
there’s much more to Cali than its famous salsa scene.
With its warm climate and rich history, Cali is a true cultural mix where
indigenous, Afro-descendant, mestizo, mulatto, and white communities
have blended for centuries, creating a unique identity that shows in its
art, food, music, and overall creativity. When combined with its natural
surroundings—featuring ecosystems ranging from natural forests to tropical
dry forests, humid rainforests, and páramos, along with the seven rivers that
flow through it, plus its more than 560 species of birds, 93 amphibian species,
and over 1,000 species of trees, orchids, bromeliads, and ferns—the city could
also be called the ‘Capital of Biodiversity.’

Cali, una ciudad única

Nuestra Historia
Santiago de Cali fue fundada el 25 de julio de 1536, fecha que la convierte en una
de las ciudades más antiguas no sólo de Colombia sino también de Suramérica.
A lo largo de su historia, ha jugado un rol estratégico como punto de conexión
entre la Región Andina de Colombia, ubicada en el centro del país y el Océa-
no Pacífico, dado que era un paso obligado de quienes ingresaran al territorio

nacional desde la costa occidental o incluso, quienes
transitaban por el país entre ciudades
de importancia política como
Santafé de Bogotá
y Popayán.

Our history
Santiago de Cali was founded on July 25th, 1536, making it one of the oldest
cities not only in Colombia but also in South America. Throughout history,
it has played a strategic role as a connecting point between Colombia’s
Andean Region, located in the center of the country, and the Pacific Ocean,
serving as a mandatory route for those entering the national territory from
the western coast or even traveling between politically important cities like
Santafé de Bogotá and Popayán.

de productos como el café, el azúcar,
las frutas y los textiles, sino también
convirtiendo a Cali, en diferentes periodos

para grupos de inmigrantes provenientes
de países como Alemania, España, Estados
Unidos, entre otros.
La cercanía de la Costa Pacífica no solo ha
establecido relaciones desde lo económico, sino que también ha influido en
la diversidad cultural aportándole a la ciudad, la riqueza de las tradiciones
afrocolombianas. Así pues, la migración de poblaciones afrodescendientes
hacia Cali han enriquecido su música (entre ellos géneros como la salsa y el
currulao), gastronomía y festividades entre otras, jugando un papel importante
en la identidad caleña.

This connection with the Pacific has also allowed Cali to build an
economy focused on international markets. Thanks to its proximity to what is
now Colombia’s main port, the city has played a crucial role in foreign trade
with international markets in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the West coast of
the United States. his facilitated the export of products like coffee, sugar,
fruits, textiles, and more, making Cali a destination of interest for various
immigrant groups throughout its history, from countries such as Germany,
Spain, and the United States.

El aporte sociocultural indígena ha sido fundamental en el desarrollo de la

ciudad. Desde su misma fundación, el valle geográfico del río Cauca estaba
habitado por numerosos grupos indígenas, como los Lilíes, Jamundíes, Cachibíes,
Vixen, Ambuchintes, entre otros, quienes dejaron una importante influencia en
nuestro lenguaje y en el reconocimiento de los recursos y el entorno natural
que nos rodea. En la actualidad el aporte cultural de estos grupos étnicos se ve
complementado por procesos migratorios provenientes de regiones aledañas
como los departamentos de Cauca y Nariño, donde comunidades indígenas
como los Nasa, los Misak y los Embera continúan enriqueciendo la diversidad
cultural de la ciudad. 15
De manera que Cali, a pesar de no ser una ciudad costera, ha logrado consolidar
en su configuración social y económica, elementos que la convierten en una
ciudad vibrante, llena de atractivos y experiencias que valen la pena vivir y
proteger, gracias a su cercana relación con la Costa Pacífica.

Being close to the Pacific Coast hasn’t just created economic ties,
it’s also brought cultural diversity, adding to the city’s wealth with Afro-
Colombian traditions. The migration of Afro-descendant communities to
Cali has brought new genres to its music (like salsa and currulao), food, and
festivals, all of which have played a big part in shaping Cali’s identity.
The indigenous sociocultural contribution has been fundamental to the
city’s development. Since its founding, the Cauca River Valley was inhabited
by numerous indigenous groups, such as the Lilíes, Jamundíes, Cachibíes,
Vixen, and Ambuchintes,. These groups have shaped local language and
the understanding of natural resources and the surrounding environment.
Today, this cultural contribution is complemented by migratory processes
from neighboring departments like Cauca and Nariño, where indigenous
communities like the Nasa, Misak, and Embera continue to enrich the city’s
cultural diversity.
Even though Cali isn’t a coastal city, it has managed to build a vibrant
social and economic development, making it a place full of attractions
and experiences worth living and preserving,
thanks to its close connection with the
Pacific Coast.

Conoce la cultura caleña

La cultura caleña es una celebración de la vida, la música, la danza, la comida
y las artes, que refleja la pasión y el espíritu alegre de su gente. Quienes visitan
Cali se pueden sumergir en sus calles y barrios para disfrutar de experiencias
únicas. Los caleños son conocidos por su espíritu festivo, su amor por la salsa
y su hospitalidad. Aquí, las sonrisas son sinceras, el ritmo se siente en cada
esquina, y siempre hay espacio para compartir una buena conversación o un
buen plato de comida típica. La gente de Cali hace que esta ciudad sea tan
cálida como su clima y en cada uno de ellos encontrarás vocación de servicio,

amabilidad y solidaridad. No te sorprendas si al preguntar por una dirección, un
caleño además de indicarte el camino, te acompañe o lleve hasta tu destino.
La mejor expresión de la caleñidad se puede ver reflejada en nuestra Feria de
Cali, celebrada cada diciembre desde hace más de 65 años, un evento que reú-
ne a locales y visitantes durante 6 días en espacios gratuitos y priva-
dos al ritmo de ‘Cali Pachanguero’, nuestro himno no oficial
compuesto por Jairo Varela y su Grupo Niche, quienes lle-
varon la salsa caleña a todos los rincones del planeta.
Otro ejemplo de nuestra diversidad cultural, es el
Festival de Música del Pacífico Petronio Álvarez que
cada año en agosto celebra la herencia africana y
que se ha consolidado como el evento gratuito
más grande del mundo de la cultura afro reci-
biendo a miles de visitantes de todo el mundo.

Discover the caleño culture

Cali’s culture is all about celebrating life, music,
dance, food, and the arts, reflecting the passion
and joyful spirit of its people. When you visit Cali,
you can dive into its streets and neighborhoods to
experience something truly special. Caleños are known for
their festive spirit, their love for salsa, and their warm hospitality.
Smiles here are genuine, people’s sense of rhythm and love for music is
felt wherever you go and there’s always room for good conversation or
a tasty dish of traditional food. The people of Cali make this city as warm
as its weather, people who will show you a sense of service, kindness, and
solidarity. Don’t be surprised if, when asking for directions, a Caleño not only
shows you the way but actually walks or drives you to your destination.
The best expression of Cali’s spirit shines during our Feria de Cali, held every
year during December for the past 65 years. This event brings together locals
and visitors for 6 days of free and private events, all to the rhythm of “Cali
Pachanguero,” our unofficial anthem composed by Jairo Varela and his
Grupo Niche, who took Cali’s salsa to every corner of the planet.
Another example of our cultural diversity is the Pacific Music Festival Petronio
Álvarez. Every year during August this festival celebrates African heritage
and has become the largest free event of its kind in the world attracting
thousands of visitors from all over.

Cali es reconocida como ‘La Ca-
pital Deportiva de América’. Es la
única capital en Colombia que cuenta
con 4 complejos y un total de 26 escena-
rios deportivos de alto rendimiento como el Coliseo Evangelista Mora donde se
juega baloncesto, voleibol, tenis de mesa y futsal; las Piscinas Olímpicas Alberto
Galindo; el Coliseo de Combate y Levantamiento de Pesas María Isabel Urrutia;
El Diamante de Béisbol Miguel Chávez, El Coliseo del Pueblo, el velódromo y el
patinódromo entre otros.
Global Sports Impact, empresa líder en investigación de mercados deportivos,
ubicó a Cali en el puesto número 30 a nivel mundial en su ranking anual de
ciudades con mayor capacidad para la realización de eventos deportivos.
Cali es la única ciudad de Colombia con 2 estadios de fútbol de talla internacional.
En ellos, los equipos locales, Deportivo Cali y América, reunen a miles de hinchas
cada semana.

Cali is known as the Sports Capital of the Americas. It’s the only city in Colombia
with four major sports complexes and a total of 26 high-performance venues,
like the Evangelista Mora Coliseum, where basketball, volleyball, table tennis,
and futsal are played. It also boasts the Alberto Galindo Olympic Pools, the
María Isabel Urrutia Combat and Weightlifting Coliseum, Miguel Chávez
Baseball Diamond, Coliseo del Pueblo, the velodrome, and the skatepark.
Global Sports Impact, a leading sports market research company, ranked
Cali 30th globally for its ability to host major sporting events.
Cali is also the only city in Colombia with two international-class soccer
stadiums. Local teams Deportivo Cali and América, bring thousands of fans
together every week.

Cali ha sido anfitriona de encuentros deportivos internacionales de gran formato

como: Juegos Panamericanos, World Games, Internacionales de Ciclismo de Pista,
Mundial de Atletismo Juvenil y dos mundiales FIFA entre otros.
Los deportistas de la región han cosechado medallas de oro en las pistas,
canchas y escenarios de todo tipo en Colombia y en los cinco continentes
llenando de orgullo a todo un país, como es el caso de María Isabel Urrutia, por
muchos años la única medallista de oro colombiana de unos juegos olímpicos.
Cali también se destaca por tener una variedad de diferentes deportes
extremos. Además, es una ciudad que anualmente realiza numerosas carreras

de atletismo en donde corredores profesionales y no profesionales viven
experiencias maravillosas en sus calles y zonas rurales.
Cada domingo las calles de Cali se convierten
en espacios de recreación para que miles de
caleños hagan deporte al aire libre.

Cali has hosted large-scale

international sports events, including
the Pan American Games, World Games, International Track Cycling, the Youth
World Athletics Championships, and two FIFA World Cups.
Athletes from the region have won gold medals in all kinds of sports venues,
not just in Colombia but across five continent brining pride to our country. A
notable example is María Isabel Urrutia who for many years was Colombia’s
only Olympic gold medalist.
Cali is also notable for being a city where you can practice different extreme
sports. It is also a city that annually holds numerous athletics races where
professional and non-professional runners live wonderful experiences through
its streets and rural areas.
Every Sunday, the streets of Cali turn into recreational spaces where thousands
of locals get active and enjoy outdoor sports.

Cali, líder en salud

Cali ha dejado una huella en la historia de la salud en Colombia, impactando a
nivel mundial. Desde los años 80 se ha convertido en un laboratorio de creación
de conocimiento en salud, integrando la academia, el sector salud, las adminis-
traciones y las comunidades. La ciudad se ha posicionado como un referente
de innovación, investigación y talento. Hoy Cali cuenta con 2 clínicas que hacen
parte del top 10 de las mejores clínicas de américa latina según el ranking anual
de la revista América Economía.
El turismo de salud ha emergido como una alternativa de desarrollo, siendo la 19
segunda ciudad del país en recibir más pacientes internacionales. Contamos con
operadores con Registro Nacional de Turismo orientados a salud como Xanato, The
Health Traveler Consultant, Banano Tours - Tour Operador y dos casas de recupera-
ción: Belanova Centro de Recuperación y Bella House; ofreciendo una amplia gama

Cali has made its mark regarding the history of healthcare in Colombia with a
global impact. Since the 80’s it’s become a hub for health knowledge bringing
together universities, the health sector, local governments, and communities.
The city is now a standout for innovation, research, and talent. Today, Cali
boasts two clinics ranked in the top 10 best in Latin America according to
América Economía’s annual list.
Health tourism has emerged as a key driver of development, with Cali being
the second city in the country receiving the most international patients. We
have health-focused operators with a National Tourism Registry, such as
Xanato, The Health Traveler Consultant, Banano Tours - Tour Operator, and
two recovery houses: Belanova Recovery Center and Bella House. They offer a

Cali es salsa. Salsa es Cali

La salsa es el alma de la música y la danza en Cali. Conocida como la ‘Capital
Mundial de la Salsa’, la ciudad es famosa por su pasión por este género musical
y su estilo de baile único. La salsa caleña, ha evolucionado creando diversas va-
riaciones como la “salsa choke”, en donde se combinan los ritmos tradicionales
con la música urbana.
La historia de la salsa en Cali es un testimonio vibrante del mestizaje cultural
y la evolución musical. Este relato comienza en la década de 1930, cuando los
sonidos del Caribe y las Antillas llegaron a Cali a través del Tren del Pacífico Co-
lombiano. Este tren no sólo transportaba mercancías, sino también ritmos y me-
lodías que se integraron al alma de la ciudad, encontrando un hogar particular-
mente acogedor en el Barrio Obrero.

Salsa is the heartbeat of music and dance in Cali. Known as the World Capital of
Salsa the city is known for its deep love of the genre and its unique dance style.
Cali’s salsa has evolved over time creating new variations like salsa choke which
mixes traditional rhythms with urban beats.
The history of salsa in Cali is a lively testament to cultural blending and musical
evolution. It all kicked off in the 1930’s when the sounds of the Caribbean and
the Antilles arrived to Cali via the Colombian Pacific Railway. This train didn’t
just carry goods; it brought along rhythm and melody that found a welcoming
home in the city especially in the Obrero neighborhood.

a fortalecer la zona de tolerancia, ubicada en la calle 19 entre la Carrera 15 y
la Carrera 10. Estos establecimientos se convirtieron en templos del baile y la
música, donde la salsa floreció y se consolidó como el ritmo predilecto de los
caleños. El Barrio Obrero, con su riqueza cultural, se erigió como un bastión del
patrimonio musical y dancístico de la salsa caleña.
El estilo de baile de la salsa caleña, conocido por su rapidez y precisión, comenzó
a tomar forma y a ganar reconocimiento a nivel nacional e internacional. La Feria
de Cali, ha sido una gran plataforma para proyectar la salsa caleña al mundo.

By the 1960’s Cali’s traditional bars and nightclubs began to shape
the entertainment scene, particularly along Calle 19, between Carrera 15 and
Carrera 10. These spots became the ultimate dance and music hubs where salsa
flourished and became the favorite rhythm of the locals. Obrero neighborhood
rich in culture, rose as a stronghold of Cali’s salsa music and dance heritage.
