Ubuntu es una distribución GNU/Linux basada en

Debian GNU/Linux, que incluye principalmente Ubuntu
software libre y de código abierto. Puede utilizarse Parte de GNU/Linux
en ordenadores y servidores. Está orientado al
usuario promedio, con un fuerte enfoque en la
facilidad de uso y en mejorar la experiencia del
usuario.

Está compuesto de múltiple software normalmente

software libre y/o de código abierto. Estadísticas
web sugieren que la cuota de mercado de Ubuntu
dentro de las distribuciones Linux es,
aproximadamente, del 52 %,3 4​ ​ y con una

El 8 de julio de 2005, Shuttleworth anunció la creación de la Fundación Ubuntu y aportaron diez millones
de dólares como presupuesto inicial. El propósito de la fundación es el de asegurar soporte y desarrollo
para todas las futuras versiones de Ubuntu.20 ​

El 12 de marzo de 2009, Ubuntu anunció soporte para plataformas externas de administración de

computación en nube, como Amazon EC2.21 ​

Enfoque en el software
A principios de 2009 los ingenieros y diseñadores de Canonical se dan cuenta de que la gestión de
paquetes e instalación de aplicaciones es demasiado fragmentada y hasta compleja, por ende se planifica
la creación de una aplicación central para el manejo e instalación de aplicaciones. En octubre de 2009
Canonical lanza oficialmente el Centro de software de Ubuntu (Ubuntu Software Center), permite buscar,
instalar, desinstalar aplicaciones, y además permite agregar
repositorios de terceros.22 ​ En octubre de 2010 se introduce la
venta de aplicaciones por medio de pagos en línea en el Centro de
software de Ubuntu.23 ​

El 3 de junio de 2010, Mark Shuttleworth anuncia el trabajo en

conjunto con el proyecto Linaro y su desarrollo de código abierto
para Linux en procesadores con tecnología ARM.24 ​ A fines de
septiembre se da a conocer antes del lanzamiento de Ubuntu

10.10, que esta versión incluiría un mejor y más estable soporte
para procesadores ARM.25 ​

En octubre y noviembre de 2010, se anuncian drásticos e importantes cambios en el escritorio de Ubuntu,

la inclusión de la interfaz de usuario Unity (creada por Canonical), la cual será utilizada en la versión de
escritorio de Ubuntu.26 ​ También Mark Shuttleworth anuncia que en futuras versiones de Ubuntu, Unity
se implementará en el servidor gráfico Wayland, y no en el servidor gráfico X (como se hacía
habitualmente).27 ​ Sin embargo, en 2013 se decide que no será Wayland el servidor gráfico elegido, sino
que uno nuevo creado por Canonical, llamado Mir.

El 18 de enero de 2011, Mark Shuttleworth anuncia la inclusión de aplicaciones creadas en Qt para ser
lanzadas a partir de «Natty+1» (después del lanzamiento de Ubuntu 11.04) y en futuras versiones de
Ubuntu. Una de las metas de esta decisión es facilitar la integración al sistema de aplicaciones Qt, en
comparación con las típicas aplicaciones desarrolladas en GTK que lucen nativas en la interfaz de usuario
de Ubuntu. Para terminar con las dificultades técnicas de configuración y preferencias del sistema entre
Qt y GTK, se crearán enlaces dconf para las aplicaciones Qt, con lo que se pretende centralizar la
configuración del sistema, ya sea GTK o Qt, en un solo lugar.28 ​

El 9 de marzo de 2011, Canonical anuncia la discontinuidad de «Ubuntu Netbook Edition», debido a la

integración de la interfaz Unity en su versión de escritorio a partir de Ubuntu 11.04, y así eliminar la
redundancia de sus versiones con un mismo escritorio. Canonical también anuncia que los nombres
«Ubuntu Desktop Edition» y «Ubuntu Server Edition» se eliminan, dejando solamente el nombre
«Ubuntu» para uso en todo tipo de computadoras, y «Ubuntu Server» para su uso en servidores.29 ​

Expansión de Ubuntu a otros dispositivos

El 31 de octubre de 2011, durante la presentación del Ubuntu
Developer Summit, Mark Shuttleworth anuncia la integración
de Ubuntu en varios otros dispositivos, tales como tabletas,
televisores, teléfonos y computadores tradicionales. Toda esta
integración concluyó en la versión 14.04, en abril de 2014.30 ​

En enero de 2012, durante la feria tecnológica CES 2012,

Canonical revela Ubuntu TV, la cual ofrece una interfaz
simple e intuitiva para organizar contenidos y servicios para
TV.31 ​

En febrero de 2012, Canonical anuncia «Ubuntu para Android», el cual permite ejecutar el escritorio de
Ubuntu directo desde un teléfono inteligente Android al conectarse en un monitor por medio de una base.
Características como la sincronización de contactos, sincronización de redes sociales, y vista de
aplicaciones Android son posibles. Ubuntu para Android tiene compatibilidad con teléfonos inteligentes
con múltiples núcleos ARM, y la ventaja de compartir el mismo núcleo con Android.32 ​

El 2 de enero de 2013, Canonical anuncia «Ubuntu para teléfonos», para ser lanzado en dispositivos
durante el año 2014. Ubuntu para teléfonos utiliza una interfaz basada en Unity, pero construida bajo
QML al igual que sus aplicaciones. Su interfaz solo utiliza gestos táctiles a través de la pantalla, al no
usar botones físicos de acceso en el frente. Además, los teléfonos inteligentes más avanzados con Ubuntu
podrán conectar el dispositivo a un dock con monitor externo para poder utilizar la interfaz de escritorio
de Ubuntu.33 ​

El 19 de febrero de 2013, Canonical anuncia «Ubuntu para tabletas». Sus principales características son
la interfaz multitarea para usar dos aplicaciones al mismo tiempo, multiusuario seguro, con la posibilidad
de usar diferentes cuentas de usuario, controles usados por voz, al igual que gestos para interactuar con la
interfaz. Ubuntu para tabletas también puede cargar la interfaz de escritorio si este se conecta a un dock
con teclado y mouse externo.34 ​

El 4 de marzo de 2013, Canonical anuncia Mir, un nuevo servidor gráfico que se utilizará a través de
todos los dispositivos con Ubuntu, esto incluye escritorio, teléfonos, tabletas y televisores, con fecha de
lanzamiento para su uso público en abril de 2014, para Ubuntu 14.04.35 ​Además de Mir, también anuncia
Unity Next, la siguiente versión de la interfaz Unity construida en QML/Qt, la cual también se usará en
todos los dispositivos con Ubuntu y disponible para el público en abril de 2014.36 ​ Con esto, Mir pasa a
reemplazar al servidor gráfico X que era usado en el escritorio, y Unity Next con QML pasa a reemplazar
la versión de Unity basada en Nux. Más adelante se anuncia que se adelantará el lanzamiento del nuevo
servidor gráfico Mir, y se lanzará junto con Ubuntu 13.10. También incluirá XMir, una nueva
implementación montada en Mir para dar compatibilidad a aplicaciones y ambientes basados en el
antiguo servidor X.37 ​

El 19 de marzo de 2013, la junta técnica de Ubuntu decide acortar el soporte técnico de las versiones no-
LTS de Ubuntu a solo nueve meses de soporte, anteriormente con soporte de dieciocho meses.38 ​

En julio de 2013, se anuncia la campaña para Ubuntu Edge, el propósito de la campaña es recaudar
32 millones de dólares durante treinta y un días en el sitio Indiegogo (http://www.indiegogo.com/), para
crear y distribuir un teléfono móvil que servirá como base para desarrollar y usar Ubuntu para teléfonos,
además de utilizar la interfaz de escritorio al conectar el dispositivo a un monitor y de proporcionar doble
arranque para usar Android. Entre las características de hardware que más destacan se indica que usará
una estructura de metal unificada, procesador con múltiples núcleos aún sin definir, 128 GB de
almacenamiento, 4 GB de RAM, pantalla de cristal zafiro de 4.5 pulgadas con una resolución de
1280 × 720 píxeles, batería de silicio-ánodo Li-ion, dos antenas de conexión LTE, Wi-Fi de doble banda,
comunicación inalámbrica NFC, cámara trasera de 8 MP con respuesta rápida a baja luz y cámara
delantera de 2 MP, y otros sensores de hardware utilizados actualmente en dispositivos móviles como
GPS, giroscopio, barómetro, acelerómetro, proximidad, y brújula.39 ​
Interfaz de usuario
Ubuntu desde su primer lanzamiento utilizó la interfaz de
usuario predeterminada del escritorio GNOME Panel, con un
panel inferior para listar ventanas y un panel superior para
menús e indicadores de sistema. Desde la versión 11.04 el
equipo de Canonical decidió lanzar su propia interfaz de
usuario; de esa manera Unity fue diseñado para optimizar el
espacio e interacción de la interfaz de Ubuntu,40 ​ aunque en
la versión 18.04 regresó a GNOME utilizando el GNOME

Diseño
La actual interfaz de usuario de Ubuntu está compuesta por tres elementos: la barra superior para
indicadores de sistema, fecha, el menú de actividades y la aplicación, el lanzador de aplicaciones al
costado izquierdo, y el tablero o Dash, ubicado en la parte inferior del lanzador de aplicaciones, que
despliega accesos a aplicaciones y medios.

Además de la interfaz Unity, Canonical ha diseñado varios elementos para esta: set de iconos Ubuntu
Mono y Humanity, temas visuales ligeros (Ambiance y Radiance), tipografía Ubuntu con varios estilos de
escritura, barras de desplazamiento superpuestas, notificaciones OSD, pantalla de inicio de sesión Unity
Greeter, gestos multitáctil uTouch, temas de sonido de inicio de sesión, y los menús globales de
aplicaciones.41 42

El logo de Ubuntu es una marca registrada y carece de la mayúscula característica de un nombre

propio.43 ​

Características
En su última versión, Ubuntu soporta oficialmente dos arquitecturas de hardware en computadoras
personales y servidores: 32-bit (x86) y 64-bit (x86 64).44 ​ Sin embargo, extraoficialmente, Ubuntu ha
sido portado a más arquitecturas: ARM, PowerPC, SPARC e IA-64.

A partir de la versión 9.04, se empezó a ofrecer servicio técnico extraoficial para procesadores ARM,45
comúnmente usados en dispositivos móviles. Al igual que la mayoría de los sistemas de escritorio
basados en Linux, Ubuntu es capaz de actualizar a la vez todas las aplicaciones instaladas en la máquina a
través de repositorios. Ubuntu está siendo traducido a más de ciento treinta idiomas,1 ​ y cada usuario es
capaz de colaborar voluntariamente a esta causa, a través de Internet.46 ​

Ubuntu y la comunidad
Los usuarios pueden participar en el desarrollo de Ubuntu, escribiendo código, solucionando bugs,
probando versiones inestables del sistema, etc.47 ​Además, en febrero de 2008 se puso en marcha el sitio
Brainstorm48 ​ que permite a los usuarios proponer sus ideas y votar las del resto. También se informa de
las ideas propuestas que se están desarrollando o están previstas.

Software incluido
Ubuntu posee una gran gama de aplicaciones para llevar a
cabo tareas cotidianas, entretenimiento, desarrollo y
aplicaciones para la configuración de todo el sistema. La
interfaz predeterminada de Ubuntu es Unity y utiliza en
conjunto las aplicaciones de GNOME. Existen otras versiones
extraoficiales mantenidas por la comunidad, con diferentes
escritorios, y pueden ser instalados independientemente del
instalado predefinido en Ubuntu.

Ubuntu es conocido por su facilidad de uso y las aplicaciones

orientadas al usuario final. Las principales aplicaciones que se incluyen en Ubuntu de forma

de correo Thunderbird, reproductor multimedia Totem, reproductor de música Rhythmbox, gestor y editor
de fotos Shotwell, administrador de archivos Nautilus, cliente de BitTorrent Transmission, cliente de
escritorio remoto Remmina, grabador de discos Brasero, suite ofimática LibreOffice, lector de
documentos PDF Evince, editor de texto Gedit, cliente para sincronizar y respaldar archivos en línea
Ubuntu One (desarrollada por Canonical y discontinuada el 1 de junio de 2014), y la tienda de
aplicaciones para instalar/eliminar/comprar aplicaciones Centro de software de Ubuntu (también
desarrollada por Canonical).

Archivo de Paquetes Personales

Un Archivo de Paquetes Personales (en inglés: Personal Package Archive o PPA) es un repositorio de
software para subir paquetes de fuentes que serán construidos y publicados como un repositorio de
Advanced Packaging Tool (APT) por Launchpad.49 ​ Mientras que el término es usado exclusivamente
dentro de Ubuntu, el anfitrión de Launchpad, Canonical, prevé la adopción más allá de la comunidad de
Ubuntu.50 ​

Seguridad y accesibilidad

El sistema incluye funciones avanzadas de seguridad y entre

sus políticas se encuentra el no activar, de forma
predeterminada, procesos latentes al momento de instalarse.
Por eso mismo, no hay un cortafuegos predeterminado, ya
que supuestamente no existen servicios que puedan atentar a
la seguridad del sistema. Para labores o tareas administrativas
en la línea de comandos incluye una herramienta llamada
sudo (de las siglas en inglés de SwitchUser do), con la que se

evita el uso del usuario administrador. Posee accesibilidad e 14.04
internacionalización, de modo que el sistema esté disponible
para tanta gente como sea posible. Desde la versión 5.04, se
utiliza UTF-8 como codificación de caracteres predeterminado.
No solo se relaciona con Debian GNU/Linux por el uso del mismo
formato de paquetes .deb. También tiene uniones con esa
comunidad, aunque raramente contribuyendo con cualquier
cambio directa e inmediatamente, o solo anunciándolos. Esto
sucede en los tiempos de lanzamiento. La mayoría de los
empaquetadores de Debian son los que realizan también la
mayoría de los paquetes importantes de Ubuntu.

Organización del software
Ubuntu internamente divide todo el software en cuatro secciones,
llamadas «componentes», para mostrar diferencias en licencias y
la prioridad con la que se atienden los problemas que informen los
usuarios.51 ​ Estos componentes son: main, restricted, universe y
multiverse.

Ubuntu, y para los que hay soporte disponible por parte de su equipo. Está pensado para
que incluya todo lo necesario para la mayoría de los sistemas Linux de uso general. Los
paquetes de este componente poseen ayuda técnica garantizada y mejoras de seguridad
oportunas.51 ​
restricted: contiene paquetes soportados por los desarrolladores de Ubuntu debido a su
importancia, pero que no está disponible bajo ningún tipo de licencia libre para incluir en
main. En este lugar se incluyen los paquetes tales como los controladores propietarios de
algunas tarjetas gráficas, como los de ATI y NVIDIA. El nivel de la ayuda es más limitado
que para main, puesto que los desarrolladores pueden no tener acceso al código fuente.51 ​
universe: contiene una amplia gama de programas, que pueden o no tener una licencia
restringida, pero que no recibe apoyo por parte del equipo de Ubuntu sino por parte de la
comunidad. Esto permite que los usuarios instalen toda clase de programas en el sistema
guardándolos en un lugar aparte de los paquetes soportados: main y restricted.51 ​

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver

Ubuntu 18.10

Ubuntu 18.10 es principalmente una actualización incremental sobre Ubuntu 17.10 con
paquetes actualizados, el cambio a la sesión X.Org por defecto en lugar de Wayland, la
presencia continuada de paquetes .snaps y una serie de actualizaciones menores en la interfaz
gráfica de usuario. El cambio no es espectacular si se migra desde la 17.10 (aparte de la
 naturaleza de soporte extendido LTS), pero sí supone un gran cambio si se actualiza desde
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Esta versión cuenta con el compilador GCC 7, descarta Unity 7 en favor
de GNOME como shell por defecto, además de diversas actualizaciones de paquetes.92 ​

Ubuntu 18.10 (nombre clave Cosmic Cuttlefish - Sepia Cósmica) fue lanzado el 18 de octubre de 2018 y
se anticipa que el fin de soporte llegará en julio de 2019.93 ​Ubuntu 18.10 incluye el núcleo actualizado a
la versión 4.18. El otro gran paquete actualizado incluye OpenSSL 1.1.1 con soporte técnico extendido.
Cabe destacar que 18.10 no ofrece actualización para i386 porque Ubuntu está considerando descontinuar
el soporte para los procesadores de 32 bits.[cita requerida]

En el escritorio, las mayores actualizaciones incluyen GNOME 3.30, Firefox 63, y LibreOffice 6.1.2, y el
tema nuevo Yaru. En el servidor, las nuevas actualizaciones incluyen: qemu, libvirt, dpdk, Open vSwitch,
cloud-init, curtin, y s390x.94 ​

Ubuntu 19.04
Ubuntu 19.04 (nombre clave Disco Dingo) fue lanzado el 18 de abril de 2019.95 ​ Incorpora la versión
Linux núcleo 5.0 que añade soporte para la tecnología de sincronización de pantalla AMD FreeSync,
compatibilidad con el algoritmo de cifrado Adiantum, particiones swap en formato Btrfs, nuevos
componentes de hardware y mejoras para el USB 3.2 y USB tipo C.96 ​

La versión principal utiliza GNOME Shell Desktop 3.32 que incluye un nuevo conjunto de iconos, mayor
rendimiento, animaciones más suaves, control de la intensidad de la luz nocturna y permisos de
aplicación avanzados. El administrador de archivos por defecto es Nautilus 3.32 que ahora soporta
archivos favoritos. También se ha añadido la versión 19 de los controladores de gráficos de código abierto
Mesa. Además, el menú Grub permite ahora un modo de «gráficos seguros», en caso de problemas con
tarjetas gráficas o controladores de gráficos. Hay mejoras en la gestión de las máquinas virtuales de
VMWare que incluyen la integración de herramientas open-vm dentro de Ubuntu, lo que permite
compartir archivos y portapapeles bidireccionales.97 ​

Ubuntu 20.04 (nombre clave Focal Fossa - Fosa Focal) fue
lanzado el 23 de abril de 2020. Se trata de una versión LTS, con
cinco años de soporte. Se basa en la versión con soporte a largo
plazo 5.4 del núcleo de Linux que incorpora soporte para nuevo
hardware, incluyendo los procesadores Intel de plataforma Comet
Lake y los primeros Tiger Lake, los SoCs de Qualcomm
Snapdragon 835 y 855, así como las tarjetas gráficas de AMD

Navi 12 y 14. También habilita el soporte para el sistema de Focal Fossa 2160p
archivos exFAT y la VPN de código abierto WireGuard, además
de la integración con Livepatch, que permite actualizaciones de

Lockdown, deshabilitado por defecto, fue introducido con el lanzamiento de este núcleo y su objetivo es
prevenir que cuentas root con altos privilegios interactúen con el núcleo subyacente al restringir cierta
funcionalidad del núcleo, denegando la ejecución de código arbitrario e imponiendo las firmas de módulo
del núcleo entre otras.98 99

Una cadena de herramientas actualizada ofrece glibc 2.31, OpenJDK 11, Python 3.8.2, php 7.4, perl 5.30
y Go 1.13. Termina la utilización de Python 2 y es movido al repositorio Universe. Este lanzamiento usa
GNOME 3.36, el que aporta mejoras a la interfaz de usuario incluyendo una pantalla de inicio de sesión
renovada y un refrescado tema Yaru. También se han hecho mejoras en el menú del sistema y en la
pantalla de instalación.100 ​Además, ahora se muestra el logo del fabricante durante el arranque. Ahora el
Centro de Software de Ubuntu instala paquetes desde la Snap Store, entregando la opción de elegir el
canal desde el cual instalar. Esta versión acabó con todo el soporte para la arquitectura de 32 bits. En
comparación con la última LTS el tiempo de instalación se ha reducido considerablemente.101 102​ ​

Los requisitos mínimos recomendados para la versión de escritorio de esta versión son:103 ​

Procesador de dos núcleos de 2 GHz.

RAM de 4 GiB.
Espacio de 25 GB en disco duro, memoria USB, tarjeta de memoria o almacenamiento
externo.
VGA con una resolución mínima de 1024 × 768.
Lector de CD/DVD o puerto USB para el medio de instalación.
Acceso a Internet es deseable, pero no esencial.
El crítico Joey Sneddon escribió en OMG Ubuntu:

Es tradición que los lanzamientos de Ubuntu LTS vayan más a lo seguro que los llamados
«lanzamientos de corto plazo» provisionales al sólo incluir prestaciones a las que los
desarrolladores de Ubuntu pueden comprometerse a mantener por al menos cinco años. Focal
no rompe esa tendencia. Pero aunque esto significa que hay pocos cambios impresionantes en
la 20.04, sí encontramos un número de mejoras iterativas, un refinamiento de la interfaz de
usuario y la funcionalidad, y algunas actualizaciones muy necesarias, se extienden por todo el
sistema.101 ​

Dave McKay, escribiendo para HowToGeek, concluyó, «Ubuntu 20.04 es una Gran Versión. Esta es una
versión pulida, atractiva y rápida de Canonical».104 ​

En It's FOSS, Abhishek Prakash escribió:

Al ser una versión de soporte a largo plazo, la estabilidad es de suma importancia. El equipo
Canonical no probará ningún cambio radical aquí. Los usuarios de Ubuntu 18.04 LTS de
seguro notarán los cambios visuales y las mejoras de rendimiento, pero no creo que se noten
muchos cambios entre la 19.10 y la 20.04.105 ​

En una crítica de DistroWatch, Jesse Smith detalló un número de problemas encontrados testeando este
lanzamiento, incluyendo problemas de arranque y la decisión de que el Centro de Software ofreciera sólo
Snaps, que son escasos en número, lentos, usan mucha memoria y no se integran bien. También criticó al
sistema de archivos ZFS por lo funcionar correctamente y la falta de soporte para Flatpak. Concluyó:
 ...estos problemas, junto con los lentos tiempos de arranque y el inestable acceso a la red
inalámbrica, me dieron una mala impresión de Ubuntu 20.04. Esto es especialmente
decepcionante porque hace sólo seis meses tuve una experiencia positiva con Xubuntu 19.10,
que también corría en ZFS. Mi experiencia esta semana fue frustrante - lenta, con errores, y
múltiples componentes se sintieron incompletos. Esto es, en mi opinión subjetiva, una mala
presentación y sorprendentemente mal acabada considerando que Canonical planea dar
soporte a esta versión por los próximos cinco años.106 ​

En una reseña del 29 de mayo de 2020 en Full Circle, Adam Hunt concluyó que la 20.04 es una versión
«prácticamente perfecta».107 ​

Escritorio, teléfono, tableta, televisión
A partir del núcleo de Ubuntu y su interfaz Unity, Canonical decidió desarrollar versiones enfocadas a
diferentes dispositivos, tales como televisores, teléfonos inteligentes y futuras versiones móviles para
tabletas.108 ​ Estas son las actuales y en desarrollo de versiones de Ubuntu mantenidas por Canonical, las
cuales van dirigidas a diferentes ambientes y dispositivos.

Ubuntu Desktop: Orientado para usuarios con

computador de escritorio. Cuenta con miles de
aplicaciones para entretenimiento y desarrollo.109 ​
Ubuntu Touch: Orientado para usuarios con
teléfonos inteligentes y tabletas portátiles. Tiene la
posibilidad de iniciar el escritorio de Ubuntu desde un
dock con monitor externo. En el año 2017 Canonical
decidió dejar el desarrollo y soporte de Ubuntu Touch,
que pasó a quedar en manos de la comunidad a
través de UBPorts.110 ​
Ubuntu TV: Orientado para usuarios con televisor
inteligente. Provee de una interfaz simple e intuitiva
para organizar contenidos y servicios para TV.
Actualmente en desarrollo.111 ​
Ubuntu for Android: Orientada para usuarios con
teléfono inteligente Android. Permite ejecutar el
escritorio de Ubuntu al conectar el teléfono a un dock
con monitor externo. También permite la
sincronización de contactos y redes sociales con
Android, y ejecución de aplicaciones Android desde el
escritorio.112 ​
Ubuntu Server: Orientado a servidores. Permite
instalar Ubuntu en un computador usado como
servidor. No instala una interfaz gráfica de usuario
predefinida.113 ​
Ubuntu Business Desktop Remix: Orientada al
sector empresarial con varias herramientas instaladas
de forma predeterminada, como: Adobe Flash Plugin,
Ubuntu Touch.
VMware View, OpenJDK 6 Java, Canonical
Landscape, se han eliminado aplicaciones sociales y
juegos. Ofrece soporte para Windows RDP 7.1 y el
diagrama Microsoft Visio en LibreOffice Draw.114 ​

algunos de los teléfonos inteligentes de la conocida marca surcoreana en un ordenador de escritorio (http
s://www.muycomputer.com/2017/03/22/dex-station/), siendo además una de las últimas grandes apuestas
de las relacionadas con el concepto de la convergencia con Ubuntu.
Fabricantes de hardware asociados
En junio de 2010, después del lanzamiento de Ubuntu 10.04,
Dell destaca el uso de Ubuntu como «social desde el
principio, rápido inicio del sistema, simple y elegante,
diseñado para internet y Ubuntu es seguro» entre otros
puntos. Dell algunas veces ofrece netbooks y notebooks con
Ubuntu desde el año 2007 hasta la actualidad.115 ​

En febrero de 2011, Canonical publica una lista de las computadoras certificadas y probadas con Ubuntu,
en aquella lista se encuentran fabricantes como Dell, Acer, HP, Lenovo, IBM, Toshiba, Asus, System76,
Intel, Samsung, etc.124 ​

En mayo de 2011, Canonical anunció un plan de colaboración con el fabricante Lenovo en China. La
división de portátiles corporativos de IBM, conocida como Lenovo ThinkPad, ha mantenido la tradición
de ofrecer equipos con SUSE preinstalado. Como parte de esta colaboración, se certificaron oficialmente
30 modelos de Lenovo ThinkPad con Ubuntu, y se esperaba que se certificaran más a lo largo del año. La
lista de modelos certificados también incluía el ThinkPad Edge 14.125 ​

En junio de 2011, el fabricante Asus comienza a vender netbooks Eee PC con Ubuntu 10.10, siendo tres
modelos los que se lanzan 1001PXD, 1011PX y 1015PX, y más modelos en lo que resta del año.126 ​
Además Canonical se asocia con los desarrolladores Mobica y Pelagicore para implementar la tecnología

1215P en 100 tiendas de Portugal. Remarcando la delgadez, ligereza y batería de 9 horas de duración.133 ​

En diciembre de 2011, el fabricante CTL anuncia el lanzamiento del notebook MB40U con Ubuntu

En mayo de 2012, Dell anuncia el lanzamiento del ultrabook XPS13 con Ubuntu 12.04, pero orientado
exclusivamente a desarrolladores.135 ​ Además el fabricante System76 lanza tres notebooks con Ubuntu
12.04, los modelos son Lemur Ultra, Pangolin Performance y Gazelle Professional.136 ​

En junio de 2012, Canonical y Dell anuncian la venta de laptops con Ubuntu en 850 tiendas en India, las
laptops son Inspiron 14R y Inspiron 15R, con más modelos dentro del año.137 ​ Y la disponibilidad de
laptops Dell con Ubuntu en China aumentará a 350 tiendas.138 ​Además Asus lanza dos modelos Eee PC
con Ubuntu instalado, los modelos son 1225C y 1015CX.139 ​

En agosto de 2012, el fabricante ZaReason lanza el ultrabook UltraLap 430 con Ubuntu 12.04.140 ​

En octubre de 2012, Asus lanza a la venta en Alemania el netbook F201E con Ubuntu.141 ​ Además
System76 lanza a la venta el computador de escritorio todo-en-uno Sable Complete con Ubuntu
12.10.142 ​

En noviembre de 2012, Mark Shuttleworth anunció durante el Ubuntu Developer Summit la asociación
con HP para lanzar computadores con Ubuntu en China. También informó que Ubuntu está siendo
distribuido a través de los cuatro más grandes fabricantes; Dell, Lenovo, Asus y HP.143 144

System76 lanza el notebook Bonobo Extreme, enfocado en usuarios que exijan grandes requerimientos de

En febrero de 2013, Dell actualiza su ultrabook XPS13 que viene con Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, con nueva alta
resolución 1080p.146 ​

En marzo de 2013, HP lanza el computador todo en uno HP Pavilion 20 con Ubuntu.147 ​

En abril de 2013, Dell lanza el computador de escritorio Alienware X51 con Ubuntu, orientado para
jugadores destacando a Steam y aplicaciones de Ubuntu. Dividiéndose entre 4 modelos desde los $599
hasta los $1049 dólares.148 ​ También ese mes, HP en colaboración con Canonical, anuncia sus nuevos
servidores HP Moonshot con procesador ARM y x86 con Ubuntu.149 ​ Además, el fabricante alemán
Cirrus7, anuncia el equipo de escritorio Nimbus con Ubuntu 12.04 LTS y Ubuntu 13.04 a elección para
instalar.150 ​

En junio de 2013, el fabricante System76 anuncia el ultrabook Galago UltraPro con la nueva tecnología
Haswell de Intel, el cual será puesto a la venta desde julio con Ubuntu instalado.151 ​

En julio de 2013, el fabricante israelí CompuLab anuncia el mini computador con procesador ARM
Utilite con Ubuntu instalado, su preventa iniciaría en agosto de ese año a un precio de $99 dólares.152 ​

Recepción y uso
En la LinuxWorld Conference and Expo celebrada en Londres, Ubuntu fue premiada con el «Reader
Award» por la mejor distribución Linux de 2005.153 ​

Una de las múltiples distribuciones Linux que usa Google en escritorio es una derivada de Ubuntu a la
que denominaron Goobuntu154 ​(no confundir con Gobuntu).
En agosto de 2006 una encuesta de 14 535 lectores de DesktopLinux.com le adjudicó a Ubuntu el 60.5 %
de las instalaciones de Linux en computadoras de escritorio. Dicha encuesta se repitió en 2007 con
38 500 participantes y con Ubuntu como la distribución más popular con una cuota de uso del 60.5 %.155 ​

Jamie Hyneman, copresentador de la serie de televisión Mythbusters (Cazadores de mitos), ha optado por
Linux, específicamente con el ejemplo de Ubuntu, como alternativa al software propietario, citando el
software inflado como un obstáculo importante en los sistemas operativos propietarios.157 158

En 2007, el Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia de la República de Macedonia (hoy, Macedonia del Norte)
desplegó más de 180 000 equipos de escritorio con Ubuntu preinstalado para su uso en las aulas, y animó
a cada estudiante del país a usar computadoras con Ubuntu.163 ​

Ubuntu también recibió evaluaciones negativas (por ejemplo, a principios de 2008, cuando la revista
PCWorld criticó la falta de un gestor de efectos de escritorio integrado), aunque esto no les impidió
nombrar a Ubuntu como la «mejor distribución Linux disponible a día de hoy».164 ​

En octubre de 2008, Wikipedia migró sus servidores a Ubuntu Server.165 ​

En enero de 2009, el periódico New York Times informó que Ubuntu tenía unos diez millones de usuarios
y en junio del mismo año se podía leer en ZDNet: «A nivel mundial, hay trece millones de usuarios
activos de Ubuntu, distribución la cual su uso crece a un ritmo mayor que cualquiera otra».166 167

La policía francesa, desde 2009, está en proceso de instalar Ubuntu en noventa mil estaciones de trabajo,
demostrando un 70 % de ahorro en el presupuesto de TI sin tener que reducir su capacidad.168 ​

En abril de 2010, Chris Kenyon, vicepresidente de Canonical Ltd. estimó que había 12 millones de
usuarios de Ubuntu.169 ​

En octubre de 2011, Canonical anuncia que Ubuntu tiene un incremento activo de 20 millones de
usuarios.170 ​

Desde noviembre de 2011 hasta el primer trimestre de 2012, el Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia entregó
120 000 computadoras a maestros de estado, que fueron distribuidas en todo el país, en las que se instaló
Ubuntu en una instalación compartida con Windows.171 ​

En mayo de 2012, estudiantes universitarios en Pakistán recibieron 125 000 laptops con Ubuntu, gracias a
la iniciativa One Laptop Per Child.172 ​

Entre mayo y junio de 2012, importantes desarrolladores de videojuegos se interesan en publicar sus
juegos a través del Centro de software de Ubuntu. Electronic Arts publica dos juegos inicialmente y
Humble Indie Bundle V publica al menos ocho juegos, además Unity Technologies anuncia que la
siguiente versión de su motor de juegos Unity 4 tendrá soporte para Ubuntu.173 174

A finales de junio de 2012, Jane Silber, CEO de Canonical, anuncia que la adopción de Ubuntu en India
creció a un 160 % el año pasado.176 ​
En junio de 2012, Valve anuncia el desarrollo de Steam para Ubuntu. Al portar el motor de videojuego
Source y el cliente Steam a Linux, pero sin fecha de lanzamiento aún. Anunciando que el desempeño de
los juegos será igual de bueno que en Windows.177 ​

En septiembre de 2012, 220 000 computadoras con una derivada de Ubuntu llamada Guadalinex se
repartieron entre dos mil escuelas de Andalucía, España, y la empresa Isotrol junto a Canonical proveían
el soporte técnico.178 ​

En febrero de 2013, Valve anuncia la primera versión estable de Steam para Ubuntu, con la posibilidad de
descargarlo desde el Centro de software de Ubuntu.179 ​

En marzo de 2013, Canonical en colaboración con el gobierno de China y el Ministerio de Tecnología de

Información anuncian Ubuntu Kylin. Una versión de Ubuntu que estará disponible junto con la versión
13.04, enfocada en promover el uso de software libre en China y tener una arquitectura de referencia más
flexible y abierta para el país.180 ​

En abril de 2013, el editor de video profesional Lightworks, usado en varias películas comerciales
anuncia su primera versión beta para Ubuntu.181

Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group

se participa con reuniones por medio de Hangouts (Google+, California. Con la presentación de inicio
Gmail chat) con videoconferencia abierta al público, chats, de jornada de Mark Shuttleworth.

en YouTube y las notas de las reuniones se publican en el sitio Launchpad y el sitio del UDS.
Anteriormente el evento se realizaba cada 6 meses y duraba 5 días en un país predeterminado para decidir
e informar sobre el desarrollo de Ubuntu. En los días que dura el evento se realizan diferentes sesiones
con respecto al enfoque que habrá durante los siguientes 3 meses con respecto a Ubuntu y proyectos
adyacentes. En las sesiones se promueven las ideas, discusiones, planes, y colaboración.190 ​

Las primeras cumbres no llevaban como nombre Ubuntu Developer Summit, solo eran catalogadas como
«eventos de Ubuntu», siendo el primero realizado en Londres, Reino Unido (sede central de Canonical),
en donde asistieron solamente los miembros del equipo de Canonical en abril de 2004. A partir de junio
de 2006 fue catalogado como Ubuntu Developer Summit en París, Francia.191 ​ El último UDS realizado
en un lugar físico fue en Copenhague, Dinamarca, en octubre de 2012.192 ​

Imágenes ISO oficiales
Las imágenes ISO de Ubuntu se pueden descargar desde el sitio oficial, para elegir la versión Desktop o
Server. También mediante la compra directa en el sitio Ubuntu Shop con discos y pendrives con Ubuntu
instalado, o mediante los equipos de distribución LoCoTeam de cada país que distribuye solo las
versiones LTS.194 195

Además de la descarga de imágenes ISO por descarga directa, también se puede descargar a través de
redes P2P como BitTorrent, reduciendo así la carga en los servidores. Para ser grabados en DVD o
unidades portátiles USB.196 ​

Otras instalaciones
Wubi: Un instalador libre y oficial de Ubuntu para sistemas operativos Windows, cuyo
objetivo es permitir que los usuarios puedan instalar Ubuntu dentro de Windows sin
formatear o perder información. A partir de Ubuntu 13.04, se abandonó el soporte para
Wubi y no sería compatible desde esa versión en adelante, esto también se suma a que en
la versión anterior se había perdido compatibilidad con Windows 8.197 198

LiveUSB: Una herramienta que viene de serie y que permite la creación de un LiveUSB de
la distribución, de modo que se pueda cargar el sistema desde una memoria USB
permitiendo guardar datos y configuraciones en el mismo, pero con la limitación de que solo
funciona en una computadora cuya placa base soporte el arranque desde un medio
USB.199 ​
LiveDVD personalizado: Existen herramientas como Reconstructor, UCK o remastersys
que permiten a cualquiera crear fácilmente un LiveDVD personalizado de una instalación
existente de Ubuntu.
CD de instalación mediante red: Se trata de una imagen ISO de apenas unos 10 MB que
contiene los paquetes necesarios para descargar el sistema base desde los repositorios
oficiales de Ubuntu y posteriormente elegir el escritorio deseado.200 ​

Usuarios
Ubuntu crea durante la instalación un usuario básico, que debe emplear sudo cuando necesite ser
superusuario.

Actualización tras instalación

Una nueva versión de Ubuntu es distribuida cada seis meses. El Gestor de actualizaciones del Sistema de
Administración de Ubuntu informa al usuario si hay una nueva versión para descargar y, si la hay,
mostrará una caja en el borde superior de la ventana diciendo que está disponible. La actualización es
incremental, es decir, solo se puede actualizar la versión de Ubuntu a la última lanzada si se está
ejecutando la última versión previa a la actual. Si posee una versión aún anterior deberá actualizar su
versión a la siguiente de aquella y así sucesivamente hasta que esté ejecutando la versión más reciente.
Por ejemplo, los usuarios de la versión 7.10 deberían actualizar primero a la versión 8.04 antes de
actualizar a la versión 8.10. Una excepción a esta regla son las versiones LTS (Long Term
Support/Soporte de largo plazo). Es posible actualizar directamente desde la versión LTS previa a la
actual.
Ubuntu Certified Professional
En el año 2006 Canonical Ltd. y Linux Professional Institute firman un acuerdo para proveer un examen
específico de Ubuntu, Ubuntu Certified Professional201 ​ que permita certificar los conocimientos de los
profesionales de Ubuntu.

Los requisitos para ser Ubuntu Certified Professional son:

Tener el nivel LPIC-1 (acredita conocimientos Linux independientes de la distribución).

Realizar el examen específico de Ubuntu (LPI 199).202 ​
Los exámenes de certificación habilitan a los estudiantes para:

Instalación y configuración de sistemas Ubuntu.

Trabajo productivo en la línea de comandos de Linux.
Configurar la conectividad de red y de los principales servicios de red.
Realizar tareas de administración de rutina: arrancar y apagar el sistema, administrar
cuentas de usuario y sistemas de archivos, y mantener la seguridad del sistema.

Existen diversas variantes de Ubuntu mantenidas por la comunidad, pero reconocidas por la Fundación
Ubuntu,203 ​las cuales poseen lanzamientos simultáneos con Ubuntu:9 ​
 Kubuntu: Utiliza el entorno de escritorio KDE.
Xubuntu: Utiliza el entorno de escritorio Xfce.
Lubuntu: Utiliza el entorno de escritorio LXDE.
Ubuntu MATE: Utiliza el entorno de escritorio MATE. Discontinuada.
Ubuntu GNOME: Utiliza el entorno de escritorio GNOME. Discontinuada.
Edubuntu: Diseñado para entornos escolares. Hasta la versión 15.10.
Ubuntu Studio: Diseñado para el trabajo con multimedia.
Ubuntu Budgie: Utiliza el entorno de escritorio Budgie.
Mythbuntu: Diseñado para crear un sistema de PC con MythTV. Discontinuada.
Elbuntu: Utiliza el entorno de escritorio Enlightenment. Anunciado en 2006, pero
discontinuado al poco tiempo.204 ​
Ubuntu Cinnamon: Utiliza el escritorio Cinnamon de Linux Mint. Anteriormente conocido
como Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix.205 206 ​ ​

Anécdotas

Ubuntu es «software libre»

Aunque las carátulas se imprimen en inglés, a partir de la versión
5.10 y hasta la 9.10, se incluyó el texto Ubuntu es software libre,
usando la palabra en español «libre», para eliminar la ambigüedad
del término free (del inglés free software) que puede significar

La existencia de software no libre en los repositorios de Ubuntu

(concretamente en los componentes restricted y multiverse), además de firmware no libre en el núcleo
Linux dio lugar a derivaciones no oficiales y rigurosamente libres de software no libre. Como respuesta a
esto, el 10 de julio de 2007207 ​ se anunció Gobuntu, una derivación oficial de Ubuntu caracterizada por
«una visión ultra-ortodoxa de licenciamiento: sin firmwares, controladores, imágenes realizadas
previamente, sonidos, aplicaciones, u otro contenido que no incluya completamente las fuentes y venga
con todos los derechos de modificación, remezclado y redistribución».208 ​

Sin embargo, después del lanzamiento de Hardy Heron, el desarrollo de Gobuntu quedó descontinuado y
se anunció que pasaría a funcionar como una opción de instalación de «solo software libre» en Ubuntu y
no una distribución independiente.209 ​

«Ubuntu» es una palabra conocida por muchos como software libre, pero es mucho más que eso. Tiene
un trasfondo que es muy interesante: «yo soy porque nosotros somos». Es una regla ética sudafricana
enfocada en la lealtad de las personas y las relaciones entre estas. La palabra proviene de las lenguas zulú
y xhosa. Ubuntu es visto como un concepto africano tradicional.

Tras la senda de Apple y Microsoft

Mark Shuttleworth estima que su referencia es Apple aunque su competencia es Microsoft. En
declaraciones hechas al diario argentino La Nación el 31 de octubre de 2008, manifiesta que:
 Apple es la compañía por vencer si es que queremos que los usuarios disfruten de una
experiencia de usuario realmente atractiva. No hay que mirar a Microsoft por su participación
de mercado y por ser el estándar, sino a Apple porque son muy buenos en lo que hacen, sobre
todo en algo que históricamente la comunidad del software libre no hizo bien, que es diseñar
una experiencia de usuario atractiva.210 ​

Corrección del primer bug

El 20 de agosto de 2004 Mark Shuttleworth creaba el primer bug registrado en Ubuntu, en ese momento
faltaban dos meses para hacer pública su primera versión. El error se transformó en todo un referente para
los usuarios de los sistemas GNU/Linux: «Microsoft posee la mayoría de usuarios en el Escritorio».

Con casi diez años trascurridos, el 30 de mayo de 2013, Mark Shuttleworth determinó cerrar este bug y
posteriormente concedió las siguientes declaraciones en la página relativa al fallo:

Me encanta reflexionar sobre las cosas que han cambiado desde 2004 y en lo rápido que
cambiaron. Aquí en Ubuntu el objetivo sigue siendo ofrecer experiencias fantásticas a los
desarrolladores y a las personas mediante la creación de infraestructuras de producción y
diversas gamas de dispositivos para los usuarios finales.

la Computación personal es hoy una propuesta mucho más amplia de lo que lo era en 2004.
Los teléfonos, tabletas, dispositivos integrados en la ropa y otras soluciones son todas parte
de la mezcla de nuestra vida digital.

El fundador de la distribución, dentro de los argumentos que otorga para la resolución del error, cita un
artículo del portal ZDNet que mostraba el constante descenso de los usuarios de Microsoft.
