We’re waiting at the entrance and it's raining a lot. As usual, we forgot to bring our umbrella so we
know we’re going to have to wait here a long time. While we’re watching the traffic and the people
outside, we start to talk about what happened last night and about the call we received from our sister.
She's a good person but she's very unhappy. We would like to do something to be able to help her but
she's too proud to accept our help. She only wants to talk; she never wants to listen.

Today is Pedro's birthday. He is 12 years old. When he got up this morning he was very excited and he

usual but none of his friends said anything to him either. It seems everyone forgot it's his birthday today.
After school he walked slowly back home, he was sad and depressed. He wondered how they could
forget something so important, but when he arrived home and opened the door everyone shouted
"surprise!". All his friends and family were there. It was a surprise birthday party.

Level 8f: Daniela
Daniela ha ido a ver su amiga María porque quiere su consejo. Tiene un problema con su vecino y no
sabe cómo resolverlo. Su amiga María le dice que no debería preocuparse y que juntas van a encontrar
un modo de solucionarlo.

Mira María, mi vecino se llama Roberto y vivimos en el mismo edificio, hasta hace poco éramos muy
buenos amigos, pero tuvimos una pelea y la verdad es que esta situación me da mucha pena.

Roberto tiene una niña de seis años y frecuentemente cuando necesita ir a algún lado o a una reunión
me pide que, si puedo cuidar de ella, y por supuesto siempre digo que sí.

Entonces lo que pasó es que estaba cuidando a su hija y estaba preparando helado casero. Le di un
poquito a ella, porque ese día se comportaba muy bien, pero resulta que su hija no puede comer helado
porque se pone muy hiperactiva. Cuándo llegó él a la casa, inmediatamente se dió cuenta de que su hija
se comportaba muy rara.

Me preguntó que pasó, y le dije que no sabía… que empezó a comportarse un poco de esa manera
después de haber comido el helado.

Pues deberías de haber visto su cara cuando le dije eso. Estaba listo para explotar. Traté de explicarle
que mira, yo no sabía eso, y que es un error que cualquiera puede cometer. Pero no, no había manera, y
después ese momento no me habla.

Al día siguiente toqué a su puerta para pedirle disculpas, pero todavía estaba furioso conmigo y me dijo
que ya no éramos amigos.

Es una pena porque me caen bien, él y su hija, y siempre estuve muy pendiente de ella cuando se quedaba
conmigo.

It's a shame because I do like him and his daughter and I was always very attentive to her whenever she
stayed with me.

Daniela has gone to see her friend Maria because she wants her advice. She has a problem with her
neighbor and she doesn't know how to solve it. Her friend Maria tells her that she shouldn't worry and
that together they are going to find a way to fix it.

Look Maria, my neighbor is called Roberto and we live in the same building, until recently we were very
good friends but we had a fight and the truth is that this situation is really hurting me.

Roberto has a 6-year-old daughter and often when he needs to go somewhere or to a meeting, he asks
me if I can take care of her and of course I always say "yes".

So, what happened is that I was looking after his daughter and I was making homemade ice-cream. I
gave her a little because on that day she was behaving herself very well but it turns out that his
daughter cannot eat ice-cream because it makes her very hyperactive. When he arrived home, he
immediately noticed that his daughter was very behaving very strangely.

He asked me what happened and I told him I didn't know... that she started to behave this way shortly
after having eaten the ice-cream.

Well you should have seen his face when I told him that. He was ready to explode. I tried to explain to
him that, look I didn't know that and it's a mistake anyone could make. But no, there was no way, and
since that moment he doesn't speak to me anymore.

The next day I knocked on his door to apologize but he was still furious with me and he told me that
now we were no longer friends.

Level 8g: Ecuador

Cuando me mudé a Ecuador mi español era muy básico, el de mi esposo era mejor pero definitivamente
no hablaba con fluidez. Puedo hablarlo mucho mejor ahora, pero todavía no puedo mantener una
conversación propiamente. Esa es una de las grandes desventajas de trabajar como profesora de inglés
aquí, hablas inglés todo el día y, todos los que conoces, sólo quieren practicar su inglés contigo.

Mucha gente llega aquí sin una palabra de español y si estás planeando enseñar inglés, realmente la
habilidad de hablar español no es de mucha ayuda, porque la mayoría de las escuelas quieren una
enseñanza "inmersiva", lo que significa que de ninguna manera quieren que hables español en clase,
sólo inglés. Sin embargo, deberías de hacer un esfuerzo para aprender español ya que la vida aquí
puede hacerse difícil bastante rápido si no lo haces, y te vas a sentir muy limitado en lo que puedes
hacer.
Incluso si no hablas nada de español, puedes encontrar un trabajo aquí enseñando inglés, pero no
ganarás mucho. Si tienes un título universitario y una acreditación para enseñar inglés encontrarás más
oportunidades, pero es importante vivir en la capital, Quito, porque hay mucho más trabajo disponible.
La ciudad de Cuenca, por ejemplo, ya tiene muchísimos extranjeros tratando de enseñar inglés y por lo
tanto ganarás muy poco. En la costa vas a estar compitiendo con todos los mochileros que trabajan sólo
por cama y comida, así que de nuevo, es difícil hacer suficiente dinero para mantenerse.

interesará si estás de acuerdo con esta política o no. Puedes pelearla, pero no es una batalla que puedas
ganar en Ecuador.

When I moved to Ecuador my Spanish was very basic, my husbands was better but he definitely wasn't
fluent. I can speak much better now but I still can't hold a proper conversation. That's one of the big
disadvantages about working as an English teacher here, you speak English all day and everyone you
know just wants to practice their English with you.

Lots of people arrive here without a word of Spanish and if you're planning to teach English really the
ability to speak Spanish isn't much help because most schools want "immersive" teaching which means
in no way do they want you to speak Spanish in class, only English. You should however make an effort
to learn Spanish as life here can get difficult quite quickly if you don't do it and you're going to feel very
limited in what you can do.
Even if you don't speak any Spanish you can still find a job here teaching English but you won't earn
very much. If you have a university degree and a qualification to teach English you will find more
opportunities but it's important to live in the capital Quito because there is a lot more work available.
Cuenca for example already has tons of foreigners trying to teach English and so you'll earn very little.
On the coast you're going to be in competition with all the backpackers that work for just their bed and
food so again, it's hard to make enough money to sustain your life.
Anyone who is planning to teach English should at least have some basic training.
Nonetheless, I don't see the point in lying to you and saying it's essential in Ecuador, because as soon as
someone arrives here it will be obvious that there are a lots of schools who don't care.

In most cases schools and students expect and demand that you teach only in English. If you get a
reputation for using Spanish in the classroom you will quickly discover that no one will employ you. No-
one's going to be interested if you agree with this policy or not. You can fight it but it's not a battle you
are likely to win in Ecuador.

Nunca pensé que estaría en esta situación; parece que la mayoría de la gente de este foro también creía
eso de ellos mismos.

Mi esposa me dejó la semana pasada y se niega a decirme dónde se está quedando ahora. Sólo nos
estamos comunicando a través del correo electrónico.

Cuando me dejó, dijo todas las cosas típicas como "te amo pero ya no estoy enamorada de ti" y admito
que no la he estado escuchando a ella y a sus quejas sobre nuestra relación en los últimos meses.

Hace tres semanas estábamos discutiendo bastante cuando sugerí que tal vez debíamos tomar un
tiempo de pausa, no quise decir que debíamos separarnos... sólo que nos estábamos lastimando
mutuamente y necesitábamos un poco de espacio. Ella no lo entendió así e inmediatamente se enojó
mucho, traté de explicárselo pero no hizo ninguna diferencia.

Los dos trabajamos a tiempo completo y también tengo un pequeño negocio, así que nuestras vidas
pueden ser bastante estresantes. Hice muchas cosas en casa como la mayoría de la limpieza y la
preparación de las comidas, y realmente pensé que estaba haciendo un buen trabajo cuidando de
nosotros. También tenemos una hija muy hermosa, tiene 4 años, y mi corazón esta destrozado por lo
que esta pasando. Nunca quise esto para ella.

He estado contando con el apoyo de mis amigos, pero me estoy sintiendo muy culpable por no haber
escuchado a mi esposa cuando me necesitaba y estaba llorando por nuestra relación, especialmente
ahora porque esta separación afectará a nuestra hija. Debería haber sido más fuerte para mi esposa,

My wife left me last week and she refuses to tell me where she is staying now. We are only
communicating through email.

When she left me she said all the typical things such as "I love you but I'm not in love with you

in the last few months.

Three weeks ago, we were arguing quite a lot when I suggested that maybe we should take a break, I did

did not understand it this way and immediately became very angry, I tried to explain it to her but it did
not make any difference.

We both work full time and I also own a small business so our lives can be quite stressful. I did lots at

taking care of us. We also have a very beautiful daughter, she is 4 years old, and my heart is breaking
for what is happening. I never wanted this for her.

I have been relying on the support of my friends but I am feeling so guilty for not having listened to my
wife when she needed me and was crying about our relationship, especially now because this separation
will affect our daughter. I should have been stronger for my wife but it seems that now it's too late. Now
that I can see a way to fix everything, she just doesn’t want to give me the chance.

Para ser honesto, de todas maneras, nunca le gustó su trabajo, pero al menos podía pagar las cuentas y

Javier is not a happy person. He has been unemployed for more than a month but he still has not said
anything to his wife and children because he feels too embarrassed. He feels lost.

To be honest, he never liked his job anyway but at least he could pay the bills and put food on the table
for his family. Now his situation is desperate and he doesn't have any idea what he's going to do. He is
40 years old so he knows his chances of finding a job are not good.

Each day he gets up at 7 o'clock in the morning. He helps the children get ready for school, puts on his
coat and tie and leaves the house with his briefcase. Obviously, he never arrives to his work, instead he
goes to a cybercafé. He sits down and begins to look for work online.

He knows he cannot continue doing this forever, eventually he's going to have to tell his wife what
happened.

Level 9: Short Story 2

Estoy atrapado en el tráfico, mirando mi reloj. Voy tarde a una entrevista de trabajo y solo tengo quince
minutos para llegar. ¡Estoy empezando a entrar en pánico!

I am stuck in traffic, looking at my watch. I'm late for a job interview and I have just 15 minutes to
arrive. I'm starting to panic.

The people are honking their horns non-stop, we've been stuck here for 20 minutes. I look around me
and see that everyone is angry and frustrated.

If I arrive late to this interview it will be a disaster so I contemplate doing something radical. What
would happen if I just open the door, get out of the car and start to walk? I imagine everyone would
start shouting at me, I could imagine the look on their faces.

In the end I decide that I have no choice but to sit here and wait. What will be will be.

Level 9: Short Story 3
Ajustarme a una nueva vida en México ha sido difícil. Tengo quince años y estoy en el último año de
secundaria. Más que nada el reto más grande para mí ha sido el idioma.

En Estados Unidos mis padres me mandaron a clases privadas de Español por tres años pero todavía
encuentro muy difícil entender a los otros estudiantes a mi alrededor. Hablan tan rápido y usan muchos
modismos. Sin embargo yo no puedo criticarlos tanto porque en inglés hacemos exactamente lo mismo.

No es fácil hacer amigos cuando eres un adolescente en una escuela nueva. Ya que la mayoría de ellos
han formado sus propios grupos y no quieren hablar conmigo. Frecuentemente como solo lo cual es
muy embarazoso para mí.

Afortunadamente solo tengo que estar un año aquí, y después de eso vamos a mudarnos otra vez a los
Estados Unidos por el trabajo de mi Papá.

Adjusting to my new life in Mexico has been difficult. I am 15 and I'm in my last year of high school.
Above all else the biggest challenge for me has been the language.

In the U.S my parents sent me to private Spanish classes for 3 years but I still find it very difficult to
understand the other students around me. They talk so quickly and use a lot of slang. I can't criticize
them though because in English we do exactly the same.

It's not easy to make friends when you're a teenager in a new school. Most of them have already formed
their own groups and don't want to talk to me. Often, I eat alone which is very embarrassing for me.

Luckily, I only have to be here one year, after that we are going to move again for my Dad's work back
to the U.S.

Level 9: Short Story 4

Hoy es lunes y estoy de pie afuera de mi nuevo departamento, debería estar feliz pero en su lugar me

normally a very optimistic person but this time things are different.

As I walked through the apartment, I looked around I could visualize where I would put my furniture.
The only thing they left behind was a broken television on the floor.

I said to myself, well this is all I can afford right now so just accept it. With time I know I can achieve
more but I have to start somewhere.

Level 9: Short Story 5

A veces los gatos hacen cosas muy estúpidas, especialmente el gato de mi vecino. Una vez más observo
mientras Emilio (mi vecino) tiene que apoyar una escalera contra el árbol que separa nuestras

En mi opinión el único motivo por el que lo hace es para impresionar a su vecina Ana. Ella es muy
atractiva y yo sé que a Emilio le gusta en secreto. Considerando que a ella le encantan tanto los
animales, él piensa que esto podría ser una buena manera de impresionarla. ¡Pobrecito!

Pues esta vez en su intento de rescatar a su gato no le fue muy bien. Mientras se acercaba a la cima del
árbol de repente el gato entró en pánico y saltó encima de él. Pobre Emilio no supo que hacer, también
entró en pánico y la escalera empezó a temblar. No pudo controlarla y los dos se cayeron al suelo.

Estaba acostado en el suelo cuando Ana llegó corriendo para ayudarle y en ese momento él decidió que
simplemente no valía la pena tratar de impresionarla más.

Sometimes cats do very stupid things, especially the cat that belongs to my neighbor. Once again, I
watch as Emilio (my neighbor) has to lean a ladder against the tree that separates our properties and

heights and I can see him doing his best not to look down as he climbs higher and higher. I can see that
his knees are shaking.

"Why do cats climb up trees anyway? It doesn't make sense" he says to himself.

In my opinion the only reason he does it is to impress his neighbor Ana. She is very attractive and I know
he secretly likes her. Since she loves animals so much, he thinks this could be a good way to impress her.
Poor thing!

Well this time his attempt at rescuing his cat didn't go so well. As he was approaching the top of the tree
the cat suddenly panicked and jumped on top of him. Poor Emilio didn’t know what to do, he panicked
too and the ladder started to shake. He could not control it and they both fell to the ground.

He was lying on the ground when Ana came running over to help him and, in that moment, he decided
it just wasn't worth it to try to impress her anymore.
