What Are Time Markers
Words or phrases that are crucial to indicate the timing of an action – such as when
it occurs, how often it happens, and its duration.
General Time References
Ahorita, Luis no está haciendo nada porque hoy es su día libre. Por eso, esta noche
vamos a ir a cenar y en la mañana vamos a ir al gimnasio. Luis está cansado porque
ayer tuvo muchas reuniones y mañana también va a estar ocupado. Yo ya me bañé
y ya estoy lista para irnos, pero Luis todavía no termina de cambiarse. Aunque es
temprano, sé que vamos a llegar tarde.

Ya can be used as a time marker for the present, past, and future

Todavía refers to ongoing actions or those not yet completed.
Luis todavía no termina de cambiarse.
Luis still hasn't finished getting dressed.

Customize the structure esta + [noun] by replacing the placeholder with a
time-related noun. Make sure to adjust esta to agree with the noun in gender and
number.
Este año. Este mes. Esta semana.
This year. This month. This week.
Expressions for Frequency and Habit
Luis y yo salimos muy seguido con nuestros amigos. Como todos trabajan,
siempre salimos los sábados. Casi nunca vamos a algún restaurante porque casi
siempre cenamos en la casa de alguien. A veces, vemos películas pero creo que
nunca hemos ido al cine juntos. Cada sábado, probamos una receta nueva y todos
los viernes Luis y yo preparamos un postre.

Due to their nature (describing frequency and routines), these time markers are
often paired with the present and imperfect tenses.
Customize the structure cada + [noun] by replacing the placeholder with a
time-related noun. Since cada naturally ends in ‘-a’, it doesn’t change to mark gender
and number.

Use the structures todos los + [noun] to say how often you do something and
ensure that todos los agrees in gender and number with the noun.
Todos los días. Todos los años. Todas las semanas.
Every day. Every year. Every week.
Near Future and Recent Past Expressions
Anoche, María, una de nuestras amigas, llegó tarde porque trabajó todo el día
porque tenía que entregar un reporte para el final del día. El mes pasado estuvo en
la oficina todos los fines de semana. Espero que pronto pueda relajarse. En unos
días, María se va a ir a Europa y yo la voy a ir a visitar el mes que viene.

Besides future and subjunctive, pronto can be combined with other tenses:
Me voy pronto. Llegué más pronto que tú. Ojalá llegues pronto.
I’m leaving soon. I arrived sooner than you. I hope you arrive soon.
Fill in en unos/unas with a time-related noun, ensuring unas agrees in gender and
number with the noun.
En unas horas. En unas semanas. En unos meses.
In a few hours. In a few weeks. In a few months.
Use para + [noun] to express the deadline of an action or event.

Para el final del día. Para el martes. Para el lunes. Para al rato.
By the end of the day. By tuesday. By Monday. In a while.
Both el + [noun] que viene and el próximo + [noun] indicate a future action in time.
Choose the structure you feel more comfortable with.
El mes que viene. El próximo mes. La próxima semana. El año que viene.
Next month. Next month. Next week. Next year.
Duration and Sequence
Mi último viaje fue hace dos años. En cuanto regrese, Luis y yo vamos a ir a visitar
a mi mamá porque hace mucho que no la veo. Creo que no la veo desde marzo y
no puedo ir a verla antes de irme. Desde mañana voy a comenzar a preparar mis
cosas porque durante dos semanas voy a salir hasta a las 9. Después de este viaje,
espero tener más tiempo porque hace años que no me relajo.

En cuanto often works with the subjunctive mood or tenses where the action has
been completed.
En cuanto llegues, llámame. Juan me sonrió en cuanto lo vi.
As soon as you arrive, call me. Juan smiled at me as soon as I saw him.
Use hace que + present to express the duration of an ongoing action.
Hace años que no me relajo.
It's been years since I've relaxed.

Hace + [amount] measures the time that has elapsed since a specific point in the
past up to the present.
Mi viaje fue hace dos años.
My trip was two years ago.
Desde + noun conveys a starting point, applicable for both past and future actions.
No laveo desde marzo.
I haven't seen her since March.
Desde mañana, voy a empezar a preparar mis cosas.
As of tomorrow, I'm going to start to prepare my things.
Complete antes/después de + [infinitive/noun] to use either an action or a
time-related noun as a reference point.
Antes de verla. Después de este viaje.
Before seeing her. After this trip.
Combine hasta with a noun to specify the endpoint or time limit of an action. For a
more advanced usage, use hasta + que followed by a verb in the subjunctive.
Te hablo hasta el lunes o hasta que sepa qué pasó.
I’ll call you until Monday or until I know what happened.
