Marina–Ben, ¿en qué horario prefieres trabajar?
Ben–Yo prefiero trabajar, eh, por la mañana, por que normalmente por la tarde estoy muy
cansado. Y Marina, ¿cuándo sueles hacer ejercicio?
Marina–Pues a mi me gusta hacer ejercicio por la tarde, después de haber terminado mi trabajo.
Ben–Muy bien, a mi también, por la tarde me gusta dar un paseo por el parque.
Marina–Ben, ¿cómo se llega al Palacio Real desde aquí?
Ben–¡Ah bueno!, para llegar al Palacio Real desde nuestra casa tienes que subir por la calle
Atocha y luego pasar por el túnel, ¿vale?
Marina–Vale.
Ben–Marina, voy a salir ¿has visto mis llaves?
Marina–Creo que están por encima de tu mesa de trabajo. Ben, ¿cómo puede ponerse en contacto
contigo la gente?
Ben–Bueno, si la gente quiere ponerse en contacto conmigo, pueden escribirme por correo
electrónico. También, si quieren, me pueden llamar por teléfono, pero casi nunca tengo mi teléfono
móvil conmigo. Así que mejor por correo electrónico. Marina ¿por qué haces tanto ejercicio?
Siempre estás haciendo yoga, andando en el parque… haces mucho ejercicio ¿por qué?
Marina–Pues lo hago por mi salud.

Ben–Vale, como hace muy buen tiempo podemos salir por el centro de Madrid y buscar una
terraza para tomar algo.

3. Translation of the conversation
Marina–Ben, when do you prefer to work?
Ben–I prefer working in the morning, because I’m usually very tired in the afternoon. Marina, when
do you tend to do exercise?
Marina–Well I like doing exercise in the afternoon, after finishing my work.
Ben–Good, me too, in the afternoon I like going for a walk in the park.
Marina–Ben, how do you get to the Royal Palace from here?
Ben–Well, to get to the Royal Palace from our house you have to go up the calle Atocha, and then
go through the tunnel, OK?
Marina–OK.
Ben–Marina, I’m going out, have you seen my keys?
Marina–I think they are on your desk. Ben, how can people get in touch with you?
Ben–Well, if people want to get in touch with me, they can write to me by email. Also, if they like,
they can call me by telephone, but I hardly ever have my mobile with me. So the best way is by
email. Marina, why do you do so much exercise? You are always doing Yoga, walking in the park…
you do a lot of exercise, why is that?
Marina–Well, I do it for my health.
Ben–Ah… you do it for your health.
Marina–I like to look after myself.
Ben–Very intelligent.
Marina–Ben, What do you want to do tonight?
Ben–Well, I feel like going out. I feel like going to the cinema, I’d like to see the new Indiana Jones
film, and you?
Marina–Well I feel like going out for a drink at a bar terrace.
Ben–OK, seeing as the weather is so good we can go out in the centre of Madrid and look for a
terrace to get something to drink.
Marina–Great!
Ben–Well, thanks for listening to us.

5. Cool Spanish!
Well, considering today’s podcast was all about ‘Por’, we thought we’d better come up with a couple
of cool phrases with ‘Por’ in the middle!
1. No me des gato por liebre – Don’t try and con me.
The above phrase, which literally means ‘Don’t give me cat instead of hare’, has its origins in the
Spanish civil war, when there was a shortage of meat, and unscrupulous butchers would try to sell
people a skinned cat pretending that it was rabbit or hare!
2. Por los pelos... – Just in time…
For example:
Hemos cogido el tren por los pelos – We caught the train just in time.
