Step by step: crashing waves
Paso a paso: olas rompiendo
¡Hola a todos!
Esta semana nos adentramos en el mundo de las olas. Vamos a ver en este
sencillo paso a paso cómo dar el movimiento y ese toque realista a nuestras
marinas.
¿Estáis preparados? Antes de empezar me gustaría haceros un breve resumen
de la paleta de color que vamos a usar y un esquema de las partes en las que
vamos a dividir nuestro dibujo por colores y texturas.
Hi all!
This week we will deep in the world of crashing waves. We are going to see in this
simple step by step how to give movement and that realistic touch to our
seascapes.
Are you ready? Before we begin, I would like to give you a complete color swatch
of the palette that we are going to use and break out of the parts in which we are
going to divide our drawing by colors and textures.

Now we are ready to describe each of the steps.
PASO 1: DIBUJO A LÁPIZ
STEP 1: PENCIL DRAWING
Hacemos un sencillo boceto a lápiz marcando la línea del horizonte y las rocas
de la izquierda. He delimitado con el lápiz un rectángulo de unos 17x13cm
Estoy usando un portaminas con mina HB del 0.5
I have delimited with the pencil a rectangle of about 17x13cm. Inside we make a
simple pencil sketch marking the horizon line and the rocks on the left. I am using
a mechanical pencil with 0.5 HB lead
PASO 2: CIELO
STEP 2: SKY
Una forma de proteger la línea del horizonte para que sea lo más recta posible
es poner cinta de pintor. Humedecemos la zona del cielo y añadimos tonos de
gris de Payne con toques de Índigo y violeta (ver cielo de tormenta en tutorial
de cielos). Yo uso un pincel redondo del número 12.
One tip to protect the horizon line to be as straight as possible is to apply masking
tape. We moisten the sky area and add shades of Payne's gray with hints of Indigo
and violet (see storm sky in the sky tutorial). I use a round brush number 12.
PASO 3: MAR Y HORIZONTE
STEP 3: SEA AND HORIZON
Este paso es muy importante para que las olas tengan movimiento. Una vez
seco el cielo y quitado la cinta de pintor, humedecemos con agua limpia la zona
de mar que hay hasta la cresta de la ola, sólo esa parte de la hoja. Añadimos
primero el tono más oscuro cerca del horizonte (turquesa+índigo) y luego, a
medida que vamos hacia abajo con el pincel, ponemos el verde para crear un
degradado. Con el color aún húmedo, salpicamos agua limpia con cuidado
(gotas pequeñas) en la parte de arriba de la ola, yo uso un pincel plano.
Dejamos secar.
This step is very important to add movement to the waves. Once the sky is dry and
the masking tape is removed, we moisten the sea area up to the crest of the wave
with clean water, only that part of the page. We first add the darkest value near the
horizon (turquoise + indigo) and then, as we go down with the brush, we put the
green to create a gradient. While the color still wet, we carefully splash clean
water (small drops) on top of the wave. I use a flat brush. Let it dry.
PASO 4: AGUA EN MOVIMIENTO
STEP 4: MOVING WATER
Con la mezcla de verde+Indian Gold+ índigo hacemos algunas ondas en el
plano medio. Podemos usar variantes del mismo color (por ejemplo añadiendo
más agua para hacerlo más claro) y pintar algunas ondas más cerca de la orilla.
Yo uso el pincel redondo del número 2. Dejamos secar.
With the mixture of green + Indian Gold + indigo we make some waves in the
middle ground. We can use variants of the same color (for example adding more
water to make it lighter) and paint some waves closer to the shore. I use a round
brush number 2. Let it dry.
PASO 5: ARENA
STEP 5: SAND
Con Indian Gold+ sombra tostada hacemos una primera capa sobre seco,
cubrimos toda la zona de la arena de la playa con ese tono bastante aguado
(muy clarito). Mientras esa capa aún está húmeda ponemos algo de sepia en el
primer plano y añadimos alguna salpicadura, creando esa textura de la arena
que ya vimos en el tutorial de la playa. Dejamos secar.
With Indian Gold + burnt umber we make a first wash on dry, we cover the entire
area of the beach sand with that mix (very watery and transparent). While the layer
is still wet we put some sepia in the foreground and add some splashes, creating
the sand texture that we already saw in the beach tutorial. Let it dry.
PASO 6: ESPUMA DEL MAR
STEP 6: SEA FOAM
Con un tono gris claro vamos a pintar las sombras de la espuma del mar.
Añadimos este color con bastante agua en las partes más oscuras. Dejamos
secar.
With a light gray tone we are going to paint the shadows of the sea foam. We add
this very transparent color in the darkest parts. Let it dry.
PASO 7: ROCAS
STEP 7: ROCKS
Con sepia e Indian gold hacemos las piedras, primero una capa en húmedo
para darle textura y luego en seco algunas sombras (sepia) entre las grietas de
las rocas. Aprovechamos este color para marcar la orilla del agua y añadir
alguna piedra en el primer plano. Dejamos secar.
With sepia and Indian gold we make the rocks, first a wet layer to give it texture
and then, on dry, some shadows using sepia between the cracks. We take
advantage of this color to mark the water edge and add some stones in the
foreground. Let it dry.
PASO 8: VELADURAS DE AJUSTE
STEP 8: ADJUSTMENT GLAZES
Con un sepia muy transparente (con bastante agua) añadimos alguna sombra
más en las rocas. Con el color verde más claro que detallo en la tabla de
mezclas (espuma) doy más oscuridad al plano medio, así constratará más el
blanco de las olas. Dejo secar. Por último, con el rotulador blanco Posca defino
la línea del horizonte y añado algunas ondas sobre el verde.
With a very transparent sepia (with plenty of water) we add more shadows on the
rocks. With the lighter green color that I detailed in the swatch color chart (called
foam) I make the middle plane darker, so the white of the waves will contrast
more. Let it dry. Finally, with the white Posca marker I define the horizon line and
add some lines on the green.
PASO 9: SALPICADURAS
STEP 9: SPLASHES
Con gouache blanco y un pincel plano salpico en la cresta de la ola y la zona
baja de las piedras. Y este sería el resultado.
With white gouache and a flat brush I splash on the crest of the wave and the
lower area of the stones. This is the final result.
