SIMPLE PRESENT
(presente simple o presente habitual)
(Citizens 1: unit 1)
1. Forma.
La forma del presente simple es igual en todas las personas, excepto en la tercera persona del
singular (he, she, it).
1.1. afirmativa:
I watch TV in the evenings. (Veo la tele por las noches.)
You work at IBM. (Trabajas en IBM.)
He speaks English very well. (Habla muy bien inglés.)
We live in Manchester. (Vivimos en Manchester.)
You go to karate class every Thursday. (Vais a clase de kárate cada jueves.)
They study at university. (Estudian en la universidad.)
1.2. interrogativa (se necesita el auxiliar do o does)
Do I look good? (¿Tengo buen aspecto?)
Do you cook at home? (¿Cocinas en casa?)
Does she live with you? (¿Vive contigo?)
Do we have to pay? (¿Tenemos que pagar?)
Do you understand me? (¿Me entendéis?)
Do they sell stamps? (¿Venden sellos?)

1.3. negativa (se necesita el auxiliar don’t o doesn’t)
I don’t smoke. (No fumo.)
You don’t know her. (No la conoces.)
He doesn’t remember me. (No me recuerda.)
We don’t like hamburgers. (No nos gustan las hamburguesas.)
You don’t go to school. (No vais al instituto.)
They don’t want to study. (No quieren estudiar.)
Recuerda que cuando la tercera persona del singular (he, she, it) está en negativa o interrogativa,
el infinitivo NO LLEVA -S. (Es decir, si está DOES o DOESN’T no puede haber -S).

Se usa básicamente para expresar situaciones permanentes o para expresar rutinas, acciones
habituales que se repiten cada cierto tiempo.
I get up every day at 7.30. (Me levanto todos los días a las 7.30.)
She works for an American company. (Trabaja para una empresa americana.)
3. Formación de la tercera persona singular en afirmativa:
3.1. Regla general: infinitivo + s (work - he works – Él trabaja.)
3.2. Excepciones: se añade -ES cuando el infinitivo acaba en:
1. o (do - She does her homework. Hace sus deberes.).
2. ch (teach - He teaches at my school. Da clases en mi instituto.).
3. sh (brush - She brushes her teeth three times a day. Se cepilla los dientes tres veces al
día.).
4. x (fix - He fixes my car now and then. De vez en cuando arregla mi coche.)
5. s (kiss - He kisses his mother every morning. Le da un beso a su madre cada mañana.)
6. consonante + y (en este caso se cambia primero la -y por -i) (study - He studies at
university. Estudia en la universidad.).

Recuerda que si acaba en vocal + y no existe este cambio: play – He plays football in our
team. Juega al fútbol en nuestro equipo.)
