GRAMMAR: CONDITIONALS
*IMP! Antes de comenzar a repasar todos los condicionales, un truco: según
vamos avanzando en el número, la “irrealidad” aumenta. Mientras que el primero
habla de que si pones agua al fuego, esta hervirá, en el último podríamos decir
que “en el caso de que los cerdos volasen…”.
1. Zero conditional (Condición 100% real)
Se utiliza para expresar situaciones que son siempre verdaderas (conocidas
como verdades universales) o que ocurren de manera habitual. Por ejemplo, si
acercas la mano a un fuego, es posible que te quemes; si sales a las calle sin
paraguas, te mojarás, etc.
Su estructura es: If + Presente Simple, Presente Simple. For example: “If you
heat ice, it melts (fijate en que lleva “s” porque es tercera persona)” o “If it rains,
the streets get wet (si llueve, las calles se mojan)”.
2. First conditional (Condición 95% real futura)
Usamos el primer condicional para hablar de situaciones posibles en el futuro
(siempre que se cumplan una serie de condiciones) y sus posibles resultados.
Por ejemplo, “Si Laura sigue llegando tarde a trabajar, es posible que la
despidan” (es posible que haya llegado con anterioridad tarde a trabajar, y es
muy probable que en un puesto de trabajo te despidan si no llegas a tiempo
muchos días”.
Su estructura es: If + Presente Simple, Futuro Simple (will + infinitivo). Vamos a
ver otros ejemplos:
• If she studies hard, she will pass the exam (Si estudia mucho, aprobará el
examen).
• If it rains tomorrow, we will stay indoors (Si llueve mañana, nos
quedaremos dentro).
• If Mercedes is hired at that school, she will probably move to Madrid (Si
contratan a Mercedes en ese colegio, probablemente tenga que mudarse
a Madrid).
3. Second conditional (Condición irreal 0,0001% presente o futura)
Se utiliza para expresar situaciones hipotéticas o improbables en el presente o
futuro y sus resultados imaginarios. Es cuando decimos la típica frase en
español: “Si me tocara la lotería, haría esto, o me compraría esto”.
Su estructura es: If + Pasado Simple, Would + infinitivo (o could/might + infinitivo).
Vamos a ver algunos ejemplos:
• If I had a million dollars, I could travel the world (Si tuviera un millón de
dólares, viajaría por el mundo).
• If I were you, I would apply for that job (Si fuera tú, solicitaría ese trabajo,
pero no soy tú)
• If I knew where she lived, I would go and see her (Pero no tengo ni idea
de dónde vive y me es muy complicado saberlo).
4. Third conditional (Condición irreal pasada, yo lo llamo “el
condicional del arrepentimiento”)
Se utiliza para expresar situaciones hipotéticas en el pasado y sus posibles
resultados si las cosas hubieran sido diferentes. Es decir, se utiliza para hablar
del pasado, pero no de algo que ocurrió, sino de algo que podría haber ocurrido.
Por ejemplo, “si Mercedes hubiera sabido lo complicadas que son las
oposiciones, quizá no habría hecho Magisterio”.
Su estructura es: If + Past Perfect, Would/Could/Might have + Past Participle.
Vamos a ver algunos ejemplos:
• If she had studied harder, she could have passed the exam (Si hubiera
estudiado más, habría aprobado el examen).
• If they had left earlier, they might have caught the train (Si hubieran salido
antes, podrían haber cogido el tren).
• If I knew, I would have worn something more elegant (Si lo llego a saber,
me hubiera puesto algo más elegante).
