Position your cross stitch centrally on the lid and pin in position. Turn the lid over and draw a line |cm from the edge on the material, then cut out. Stick double-sided tape around the rim and stretch the material on to the tape. Trim excess fabric at the corners. Stick a length of red ribbon round the rim with double-sided tape, and cover the sides of the box with matching fabric, Snip the corners, fold the flaps underneath and stick. On I4HPI or 28HPI work nine poppies. At this stage, if you wish to make a larger or smaller mat, simply add or subtract the number of poppyheads in the border. Now work the backstitch border around the poppyheads, leaving just one space all the way around. Work a cross stitch border around this, Extend it for approx 34cm (131/2in) to the left side at both top and bottom and then join / these up the left side of the mat to complete the cross stitch border. Now work a backstitch border within and f finish off the borders with backstitch all the way around the edge. You can now 1 position the poppy design within the bottom left corner putting it three blocks in from the backstitch borderline on each side. Trim off lem (I/4in) and hem or fray to finish each mat THE NAPKIN —We used 2 28-count Jobelan fabric which is softer than aida and so particularly Useful for table-linen that needs to drape. Stitch the poppy design inside one corner, with the large poppy head 6cm (21/2in) from each side edge and facing into the corner. When you've finished, add a backstitch borderline to make a corner, positioning it six threads from each side of the design and ‘extending it four threads beyond the tips of the leaves. Now add a cross stitch comer followed by another backstitch line, each time extending the lines so this corner border doesn't finish in a straight line. Now trim off lem (I/4in) and hem to finish each napkin, THE NAPKIN RING - Stitch six of the poppyheads on to a piece of aida band, and add the ‘cross stitch and backstitch borderiines. Finish off by joining the two ends to make a ring. THE COASTERS — The square coaster design needs to be worked on to ISHPI fabric so it is small ‘enough to fit in a Fabric Flair square coaster. Simply stitch from the chart as shown. The circular coaster contains just the large poppy head worked on to I4HPI aida, Simply back your stitched pieces wit Vilene then trim to fit and position within the coaster before attaching the plastic backing, "Turn to our reader offers on page 60 \_ for more ee the / CROSS STITCH CHART POPPY FAIRY < &P Designer’s TOP TIP >SHOPPING LIST POPPY TABLELINEN |4HPI white aida or 28HPI white evenweave, 48x33cm (19!/2x13!/2in) for the tablemat; 15cm (6in) length of 6cm (2!/2in) wide band for napkin ring; 10x 1 0cm(4x4in) for coaster; 34x34cm Sue says: My tip is to stitch the tablemat on a rectangular rather than a circular frame. | always use a rectangular floor-standing frame, as | like needlepoint. Use the loop method to start: take a single strand of thread, fold in half and thread the folded end through the needle. Come up from the back to the front leaving the loop hanging on the back. Make your first half stitch then take the needle to the back, thread it through the loop, and continue stitching. When you've finished, trim around the plastic canvas, leaving one row all around the edge, and attach a badge pin or magnetic strip. These are available in good needlecraft outlets and some of the larger craft stores. If you've been reading our padded @ frame feature on page 48 in Issue 7 then you can use this idea to make a colourful nameplate for your child’s bedroom. Stitch their name and then choose some bright-coloured fabric to match their room and use it to make a super padded frame. The good thing about making your own is that you don’t have to search for a bigger frame if your child’s name happens to be rather long like Christoper or Elizabeth. Make a notelet to send to a 4 4 friend by stitching their initial on the front. Mount within a card, write your message then pop into an envelope and post. Ey) Make your own nursery sampler.
