 Con casi siete kilómetros de costa y cinco playas ur-
banas, Benicàssim se ha convertido en uno de los
destinos por excelencia de la provincia de Castellón
y un destino turístico preferente de la Comunidad
Valenciana. Gracias a las bondades de un clima sua-
ve y a una ortografía particular, el municipio pre-
senta unas condiciones excelentes para disfrutar
de cada instante y ofrece experiencias completas y
diferenciadas, dirigidas al turista que viene solo, en
familia o con amigos.
Benicàssim es mar. En sus playas Voramar, Almadra-
ba, Torre San Vicente, Els Terrers y Heliópolis ondea la
Bandera Azul que reconoce su calidad. Además, todas cuen-
tan con la certificación medioambiental ISO 14001 y hay cerca
de 80 accesos directos y pasarelas, áreas de juegos y recreo, servi-
cio de salvamento y socorrismo, paneles informativos con pictogra-
mas, así como servicios adaptados con material y personal especializado.

Benicàssim también es naturaleza con el Desert

de les Palmes, el parque natural más extenso de la
Comunitat Valenciana; un verdadero pulmón verde
que gracias a la naturaleza y la silueta que dibujan
Les Agulles es inconfundible. La Vía Verde del Mar
que une Benicàssim con Oropesa es otra de las pro-
puestas que permite el contacto con la naturaleza.
Benicàssim también es historia y arte, como el que
se respira a través del rico patrimonio arquitectóni-
co conformado por 51 villas de los años 20, ubica-
das en el Paseo Pilar Coloma y que poseen un aire
modernista vintage inimitable.
Y Benicàssim es Ciudad de Festivales. Siente la
música y se mece al ritmo de los acordes de guitarra
española, se emociona con la mejora ópera al lado
del mar, mueve el alma a ritmo del mejor blues y

12 No hay placer más personal que el de la propia mirada. Sobre todo, ante espec-
táculos tan soberbios como el de las playas españolas. Por eso, cada vez es más
/

común viajar por el mundo con drones, que realizan las mejores fotografías
desde el aire. Algo que, a muchos, les puede parecer aparatoso e incómodo,
en realidad, es más sencillo. Los drones han venido para quedarse, como
llegaron las polaroid o los teléfonos móviles. Si disfrutamos con la fotogra-
fía o el vídeo, estos aparatos servirán en bandeja las vistas más atractivas,
hasta ahora reservadas a los privilegios de las aves.
Las vacaciones estivales son idóneas para capturar a golpe de dron las me-
jores perspectivas aéreas de las playas españolas. De lo que se trata, al fin y
al cabo, es de coleccionar instantes gracias al uso de una tecnología, cada vez
más accesible a todos los bolsillos y competencias. Los mejores momentos
para el vuelo se producen al amanecer y al atardecer. Están poco concurridas,
hay una menor exposición a riesgos y la tibieza de los rayos del sol son un filtro
fotográfico aún no igualado por el hombre. Todo ventajas.
Ante todo, seguridad. A la hora de poner en el aire estos aparatos, hay que contar

con la habilitación como piloto de drones A1/A3 o el certificado oficial para vo-
lar drones en STS (Sistema de Terreno Sombrado). En las playas, basta con
la formación oficial para volar drones en espacios abiertos, mientras que
para hacerlo cerca de núcleos urbanos, zonas CTR o ZEPA se necesita el
certificado de habilitación como piloto de drones en escenarios estándar.
También es necesario darse de alta como operador de drones ante la
Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea (AESA) y registrar el aparato, así
como disponer de un seguro de responsabilidad civil por posibles daños a
terceros. Una vez resuelto el papeleo, sólo queda disfrutar.

ish beaches with a drone. After all, it is all about collecting moments
thanks to a technology that is increasingly accessible to all budgets
and skills. The best times to fly are at dawn and dusk. They are not very
crowded; there is less exposure to water, and the warmth of the sun's
rays is a photographic filter not yet equaled by man—all advantages.
Above all, safety. When flying these devices, you must have an A1/
A3 drone pilot's license or an official certificate to fly drones in STS

(Shaded Terrain System). On beaches, official training is sufficient to
fly drones in open spaces, whereas a drone pilot's certificate is re-
quired for standard scenarios to fly drones near urban centers, CTR
areas, or SPAs.

tion Safety Agency (AESA) and register the device and have civil liabili-
ty insurance for possible damage to third parties. Once the paperwork

Playa del Silencio (Asturias): aunque

es bastante visitada, la primera hora de la
mañana es un momento ideal para tomar
imágenes únicas del entorno. Es necesario
tramitar permisos de vuelo, al ser una zona
de especial protección de aves.

Playa de Santa María de Oia (Ponte-

vedra): se encuentra a los pies del Monaste-
rio de Santa María de Oia, el único de Espa-
ña ubicado en la costa, en pleno Camino de
Santiago portugués.

Playa de A Lamiña (Pontevedra): aun-

que el viento puede dificultar el vuelo de los
aparatos, la arena fina de este litoral merece
el esfuerzo.

Playa de Langre (Cantabria): en un

día sin viento permite grabar unos planos
aéreos excelentes. Aunque es un espacio

permisos.

Nada nuevo bajo el sol. Entre 1601 y 1606, el Duque de Lerma perpetró una
operación magistral, el traslado y retorno del rey y su corte entre Madrid y
Valladolid. Los beneficios de la venta de terrenos le convirtieron en el hombre
más rico de su tiempo. Hoy queda, como legado de su poder, el magnífico
Parador de Lerma, cuya redecoración le convierte en un destino sencillamente
imprescindible.

Nothing new under the sun. Between 1601 and 1606, the Duke of Lerma perpetrated
a masterful operation: the transfer and return of the king and his court between
Madrid and Valladolid. The profits from the land sale made him the wealthiest
man of his time. Today, the magnificent Parador de Lerma, whose redecoration
makes it an essential destination, remains a legacy of his power.
 Entre todos los granujas de nuestra historia,
don Francisco de Sandoval y Rojas (Tordesi-
llas, 1553-Valladolid, 1625) hace podio sobra-
damente. Al primer duque de Lerma le co-
rresponde el honor de apuntarse la operación
de especulación inmobiliaria más sustancio-
sa que vieron los siglos. Con el beneplácito
de Felipe III, Sandoval trasladó la corte a
Valladolid (1601) y la trajo de vuelta a Madrid
(1606) comprando terrenos en ambas villas
por cuatro perras que, en cada mudanza de
la corte, eran vendidos por un dineral.

Ciertamente, el rey se lo puso fácil. Felipe III

no había heredado la ambición imperial ni la
prudencia de su padre y tenía más interés en
la caza, el teatro y los juegos de mesa. El his-
panista John Lynch se refiere al tercero de los
Austrias como “el rey más vago de la Historia
de España”. Y punto. Para la farragosa tarea
de gobernar las Españas, el monarca delega-
ba en su valido, Sandoval, ávido de poder y
de riquezas.
El duque de Lerma era un arribista cuyas
aspiraciones venían de lejos. Nacido en una
familia aristocrática, don Francisco supo
ganarse la confianza de Felipe III desde que

Su firma valía tanto como la del rey. Tanto

pende el movimiento de todos los negocios”.
En aquella España fatigada por las guerras,
se firmó la paz con Inglaterra, Francia y Ho-

landa para dar cuartel a las arcas reales. Los

más escépticos apuntan a que la intención
de Sandoval era embolsarse los fondos pre-
vistos para las campañas militares. Además,
se llevó a término una de las calamidades
más chapuceras del pasado: la expulsión de
300.000 moriscos. Fue un drama inestima-
ble, que también privó a las huertas levan-
tinas de sus agricultores cualificados y a la
hacienda de probos pagadores.

jugada maestra: el traslado de la corte a Valladolid en
1601. Sobre el papel, era el crimen perfecto. Alejaba al
rey de la influencia de su abuela, la emperatriz María
de Austria y, mayormente, se hacía de oro. El golpe re-
quirió cierta planificación y, en eso, el duque era un lin-
ce. Compró allí como gangas el patronato de la iglesia,
el monasterio dominico y el palacio de la plaza de San
Pablo. La llegada de los reyes a la ciudad castellana, y
de 10.000 funcionarios y nobles, hinchó los precios y
multiplicó el valor de la venta de estos inmuebles ad-

1553-Valladolid, 1625) is more than worthy of
the podium. The first Duke of Lerma has the

In that war-weary Spain, peace was signed with

England, France, and Holland to give quarter to
the royal coffers. The most skeptical point out
that Sandoval intended to pocket the funds
foreseen for the military campaigns. In addition,

How important is space for scientific and tech-
nological development?
Immense. We use space much more than we realise.
On average, each of us uses an average of twenty
satellites in their daily lives. Satellites allow us to 41

communicate, navigate, observe the Earth and study

climate change. Space missions help us to advance
our knowledge of the Universe and to carry out scien-
tific experiments that have applications in other sec-
tors. The technological development to launch these
missions is about jobs, industry and innovation. It af-
fects absolutely everyone. We would not have mobile
phones without space exploration.
How do you deal with public attention and be-
ing a female role model?
With responsibility and honesty. I don't want to disap-
point. Even if people think I'm a Marvel superhero, I'm
a human being. It's okay to have flaws and make mis-
takes. We all have doubts and insecurities and try to
do our best. The best part is seeing the motivation in

How do you stay motivated and prepared for a
potential space mission?
I dream of going into space, but I keep my feet on the
ground and I thoroughly enjoy my work and my life. I
am also looking forward to the mission. It's a dream

el caladrio –un pájaro capaz de adivinar y prevenir la muerte– fue uno de
los fetiches favoritos de los sabios antiguos hasta que la imprenta y el método

científico lo exiliaron del imaginario colectivo. Ochocientos años más tarde

Antonio García, un observador acostumbrado a esos lenguajes olvidados, ha
descubierto dos en las paredes de la iglesia del Monasterio de San Pedro de
Villanueva (Asturias).

La literatura científica recoge solo dos caladrios fuera de los manuscritos

ilustrados: uno en St. Mary en Alne, cerca de York, y otro en una vidriera
de la catedral de Lyon. Hay un tercero, mucho menos conocido, en la igle-
sia de San Andrés de Montearados (Burgos). Los dos recién encontrados
en Cangas de Onís significan, como insiste su descubridor, que “el 75%
de los relieves de caladrios del mundo están en España, y la mitad en
Asturias”.
Inicialmente, cuando lo vio, Antonio García pensó que era el águila del
evangelista San Juan. Pero no tenía sentido. “Estuve tres años dándole
vueltas”, explica. “Horas y horas mirando las fotos y preguntándole ‘quién
eres’. Y de repente se encendió la bombilla”. Aunque hace años Antonio
había estudiado el de Burgos y escrito un artículo sobre él en el blog de

Radio Cangas, no se dio cuenta. Pero de pronto todo tenía sentido. Poco
después descubrió otro oculto al lado norte. Había encontrado dos cala-
drios.
“Pasé tres noches sin dormir”, confiesa. “Tenía muchos nervios. Si me
pasaba algo quedarían ahí olvidados otros ochocientos años. Quería ha-
cer algo para contárselo a los amigos de nuestro grupo de románico, pero
no podía arriesgarme a guardar el secreto hasta entonces. Tuve que lla-
mar al equipo del Parador, donde había dado algunas charlas, para evitar
ese riesgo de que se perdieran. Quedamos en guardar el secreto hasta que
lo anunciáramos en una conferencia, y esa noche ya pude dormir”.

Initially, when he saw it, Antonio García thought it
was the eagle of St. John. But it didn't make sense.
"I spent three years thinking about it," he explains.
"Hours and hours looking at the photos and asking,
'who are you.’ And all of a sudden it dawned on me."
Although years ago Antonio had studied the one in
Burgos and written an article about him in the Ra-
dio Cangas blog, he didn't realize it. But suddenly it
all made sense. Soon after, he discovered another
hidden one on the north side. He had found two ca-
ladrius.

"I was unable to sleep for three nights," he confess-

es. "I was very nervous. They would be forgotten for
another eight hundred years if anything happened
to me. I wanted to organize something to tell my
friends in our Romanesque group, but I couldn't risk
keeping the secret until then. So I called the staff at
the Parador, where I had given some talks, to avoid
this risk of losing the knowledge again. We agreed
to keep the secret until we announced it at a confer-
ence, and that night I could sleep again."

Con una simple mirada, el caladrio podía decirte si ibas a vivir o a mo-
rir. Residía en la corte de los reyes, y si alguien en palacio enfermaba el
ave era llevada al borde de su cama. Si evitaba mirar al convaleciente
su destino estaba sellado: moriría. Pero si el pájaro profético miraba al
enfermo, este sanaría. A través de la mirada del caladrio la enfermedad
pasaba al ave, que entonces volaba hasta el sol, donde la afección ardía
y era destruida.
LOS CALADRIOS DE CANGAS

El Atharvaveda, escrito en el valle del Indo hace tres mil años como re-
copilación de tradiciones populares mucho más antiguas, habla de un
ave que curaba la ictericia: “en el haridrava ponemos tu amarillentez”,
dice uno de sus versos. El Romance de Alejandro Magno, escrito en la
Grecia clásica, cuenta como los macedonios encontraron en el palacio
de Jerjes una sala de oro “en la que colgaba del techo una jaula de oro,
y en ella había un pájaro dorado del tamaño de una paloma, que según Half of the

la humanidad; el vuelo el sol la ascensión del salvador a los cielos. El

párroco de San Andrés de Montearados siempre había pensado que
el caladrio de su iglesia era el “Espíritu Santo, que daba la espalda al
enfermo”. Y, a un nivel simbólico, esta lectura no era incorrecta. Como
explica Antonio, ese es el significado que los cristianos dieron al cala-
drio. Es la señal de la salvación o de la condena eterna.
“Un mito es algo que nunca ha ocurrido pero que ocurre todo el tiem-
po”, decía Joseph Campbell. La mitología es poesía, es metáfora. La
penúltima verdad, el último conocimiento que podemos sostener con
imágenes o palabras. Las leyendas que hoy desdeñamos como explica-
ciones analfabetas y cuentos para niños señalan más allá del precipicio
al borde de la mente consciente, hacia lo que puede ser conocido pero
no contado. Y cuando se intenta analizar la poesía del mito como bio-
grafía, historia o ciencia, esa poesía muere.
La historia del caladrio no es cierta, pero tampoco es falsa. Solamente

está contada en un lenguaje olvidado, el que usamos para almacenar

los conocimientos importantes durante los noventa y cinco milenios
que pasaron desde que empezamos a hablar hasta que apareció la es-
critura. Una vez fue un sueño público, una expresión del subconsciente
colectivo que otras culturas adaptaron para su propio uso. Y cuando
con el paso del tiempo las costumbres y necesidades sociales cambia-
ron, los caladrios de Cangas fueron olvidados entre las sombras y el
musgo de los capiteles del monasterio, esperando a que alguien como
Antonio –miembro de esa resistencia que aún es capaz de contemplar
fuera de una pantalla– pasara por allí con ojos para verlos y conocerlos.
BUT WHAT IS A CALADRIUS?
With a simple glance, the caladrius could tell you whether you
would live or die. It resided in the court of kings, and if some-
one in the palace fell ill the bird would be brought to the edge
of their bed. If it avoided looking at the convalescent their fate
was sealed: they would die. But if the prophetic bird looked
at the sick person, they would be healed. Through the gaze of
the caladrius the disease would pass to the bird, which would
then fly to the sun, where the affliction would burn and be de-
stroyed.
The Atharvaveda, written in the Indus Valley three thousand
years ago as a compilation of much older folk traditions,
speaks of a bird that cured jaundice: "in the haridrava we put
your yellowness,” says one of its verses. The Romance of Al-

exander the Great, written in classical Greece, tells how the
Macedonians found in Xerxes' palace a golden room "in which
hung from the ceiling a golden cage, and in it was a golden bird
the size of a dove, which they said prophesied to the king."
The story of the caladrius continued its journey westward
and, confronted with other religions and cultural needs, grad-
ually changed its appearance. The golden bird sometimes
like a seagull and sometimes like a peacock became a white
dove. Its saving look represented the mercy of Christ; the
consuming of the disease its salvation of humanity; the flight
towards the sun the ascension of the Savior to the heavens.

The parish priest of San Andrés de Montearados had always 57
thought that his church’s caladrius was the "Holy Spirit, who

turned its back on the sick.” And, on a symbolic level, this
reading was not incorrect. As Antonio explains, that is the
meaning Christians gave to the caladrius. It is the sign of sal-
vation or eternal damnation.
"A myth is something that never happened but that happens
all the time," said Joseph Campbell. Mythology is poetry; it is
metaphor. The penultimate truth, the last knowledge we can
hold with images or words. The legends we scorn today as
illiterate explanations and children's stories point beyond the
precipice at the edge of the conscious mind, to what can be
known but not told. And when one attempts to analyze the
poetry of myth as biography, history, or science, that poetry
dies.
The story of the caladrius is not true, but neither is it false. It

is only told in a forgotten language, the one we used to store

important knowledge during the ninety-five millennia that
passed since we began to speak until writing appeared. It was
once a public dream, an expression of the collective subcon-
scious that other cultures adapted for their use. And when,
over time, customs and social needs changed, the caladrius
of Cangas were forgotten among the shadows and moss of
the monastery, waiting for someone like Antonio –a member
of that resistance that is still able to contemplate outside a
screen– to pass by with eyes to see and know them.

oportunidad para disfrutar del Festival Internacional de Teatro
Clásico de Mérida. La 69ª edición de este referente estival a nivel
mundial se celebrará del 1 de julio al 27 de agosto. Jesús Cimarro
será de nuevo el encargado de dirigirlo a través de Pentación
Espectáculos, como ya ha hecho en las últimas 11 ediciones.

En esta ocasión, para conmemorar los 90 años que se

cumplen desde la inauguración del Festival en 1933,
el Teatro Romano de Mérida acogerá 10 espectáculos,
con un enfoque destacado en la comedia. Además, ha-
brá extensiones en el Teatro María Luisa y en las ciu-
dades de Madrid, Medellín, Regina y Cáparra, con un
total de 19 representaciones.
El pistoletazo de salida estará a cargo de la Orquesta de
Cámara de Zaragoza (Grupo Enigma), interpretando
Oresteïa de Iannis Xenakis basada en textos de Esquilo.
Al día siguiente, los asistentes disfrutarán de una fun-
ción especial de Los gemelos, de Verbo Producciones.
En cuanto a la comedia, El Terrat presentará Las asam-

bleístas (Las que tropiezan), una versión de la obra clá-

sica de Aristófanes protagonizada por Sílvia Abril, que
se podrá disfrutar del 5 al 9 de julio en el Teatro Ro-
mano. Rodetacón Teatro llevará al escenario el musical
Los titanes. La furia de los Dioses del 12 al 16 de julio,
con Daniel Diges y Ramoncín como parte del elenco.
Además, el Centro Dramático Galego hará su debut en
el Festival de Mérida este año los días 18 y 19 de julio
con Shakespeare en Roma, una recopilación de obras
de temática romana del famoso escritor.

 El Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de
Almagro llega a su 46.ª edición bajo la direc-
ción artística de Irene Pardo en una cita que
extenderá su programa de actividades entre
los días 29 de junio y 23 de julio.
La programación está integrada por 44 espec-
táculos, de los que doce corresponden a es-
trenos –once absolutos y uno nacional–, con
un total de 100 funciones. El Festival apuesta
también por una programación con destaca-
da presencia femenina, con la que pretende
visibilizar el papel de las mujeres en el teatro
del Siglo de Oro.
Almagro reunirá además a figuras destaca-

op. It's the wonderful madness of filming, where
a great team brings a story to life, a dream to tell,
and then watch it on the big screen!
As an actress, you also have experience in 85
dubbing. Does it allow you more freedom

than a conventional play? In what way can
the voice give even more value to the char-
acter?
I love dubbing, especially in animated films. I would
like to do it more often, just like sound fiction or
audiobooks. Earlier this year, I was lucky enough
to voice all the characters in Alice in Wonderland
for Podimo, which was crazy! And it's been one of
the biggest challenges as an actress that I've done
with my voice. So much fun!
Let’s look at your current projects. What are
you currently working on?
I'm immersed in the shooting of Nacho García Velil-
la's film Menudas Piezas. A comedy about a group
of teenagers from a marginal high school who,

dores y fogones de Europa de que aquí disfrutamos del azúcar –gracias al cultivo
de la caña dulce introducida por los árabes– mucho antes que nuestros vecinos
del norte.
Paradores es buen guardián de la repostería de toda la vida. La Red ha querido
conservar estas costumbres ofreciendo en sus cartas postres con tradición, unos
muy populares, conocidos en todo el país con escasas diferencias en su elabora-
ción, y otros locales, de esos que alegran las fechas señaladas en cada pueblo o
ciudad.
Paradores ha recopilado gustosamente este legado y lo ha puesto al día. Con este
fin, ha investigado en las costumbres de cada territorio en el que se ubican sus
establecimientos y, sin quitarle su esencia, le han dado aires nuevos puliendo los

bién de su final. Son postres totalmente distintos, con un final equilibrado y muy
ligeros en su conjunto. Este es el concepto”.
Al llevar la teoría a la práctica saltan las sorpresas. Lejos de establecer una oferta
uniforme, Paradores ha incitado a cada una de sus cocinas a crear un postre dife-
rente. Lleida, en su caso, ofrece una primorosa crema de calabaza con un bizco-
cho de remolacha y un helado de zanahoria ahumada. Guadalupe, por su parte,
un pastel de queso Ibores con calabaza y almendra, que es un primor. ¿Cómo se
pueden unir elementos tan aparentemente dispares y salir bien librado? Esa es la
pregunta que los comensales deben plantearse. Mientras encuentran la respuesta,

y no, pueden entregarse al disfrute de estos pequeños platos.

Ese momento de júbilo de los clientes es el propósito último de esta innovación en
la carta. “Queremos descubrir nuevas tendencias para ser disfrutadas por nuestro
público ¡Qué mejor que terminar así una comida! Que vean que hay productos
muy ricos no sólo en salado, también en dulce. Es un trabajo difícil, pero en Pa-
radores no nos quedamos parados. Somos diferentes y tenemos nuestra propia
filosofía. El mundo gastronómico es tan amplio que siempre hay una evolución”,

CAMINO DEL HIERRO AND ARRIBES DE DUERO.
A pedestrian route along a section of railway line closed to
traffic and conditioned, Camino de Hierro combines the
grandeur of the most representative civil engineering of the
nineteenth century with spectacular nature in the Arribes
del Duero Natural Park. It is located 45 minutes from the
Parador.
SIEGA VERDE PALEOLITHIC ART ENSEMBLE. It is
located 30 minutes from the Parador. In a magnificent land-
scape, on slate rocks next to the Águeda River, one of the
largest open-air rock art galleries in Europe. Siega Verde,
declared a World Heritage Site in 2010, contains representa-
tions dating back some 20,000 years.
SANCTUARY OF LA PEÑA DE FRANCIA. One of the
highest-altitude Marian sanctuaries in the world (1727 m),
the monastic complex is practically inaccessible in winter

due to snow. In addition to the 15th-century church and con-
vent, the site offers views of the Campo Charro to the north,
the Tamames mountain range to the east and the Gabriel y
Galán reservoir to the south.
LAS BATUECAS VALLEY. At 50 km from the Parador, Las
Batuecas is a magical valley in which the Carmelite monas-
tery of Desierto de San José -founded at the end of the 16th
century and recently restored- and the local fauna, dominat-

Paradores reestrena uno de sus hoteles más
antiguos tras permanecer cerrado durante
casi ocho meses debido a trabajos de renova-
ción. La intervención ha permitido una pro-
funda mejora y modernización de la mayo-
ría de los espacios, sin perder la esencia de la
marca Paradores y de un edificio que forma
parte de la Red desde 1931.

La remodelación ha tenido como base todos los

cuartos de baño del edificio, que se han adaptado

para personas en situación de discapacidad o con

movilidad reducida, tanto en las 34 habitaciones
como en los aseos comunes. También se han reno-
vado la carpintería interior y los sistemas de climati-
zación, además del trazado de nuevas instalaciones
de fontanería y electricidad y la colocación de nuevos
revestimientos, sanitarios, griferías, espejos, ilumi-
nación y accesorios. Todos con materiales en conso-
nancia con la esencia del lugar.

y se han realizado adaptaciones de accesibilidad y

En las 34 habitaciones se han combinado piezas del
propio Parador y con otras de diferentes estableci-
mientos de la cadena hotelera. Todas han sido res-
tauradas y complementadas con nuevos muebles,
iluminación y textiles. En las habitaciones superio-
res se ha prestado especial atención a las paredes,
utilizando papeles pintados, y se han diseñado y fa-

calidez. También se ha puesto mucho énfasis en
la colección artística, que ha sido ampliada
con una selección de treinta piezas, entre
las que destacan la talla de un rey cas-

flamenco de finales del XVII que re-
presenta la diosa Cibeles o una espec-
tacular pintura de gran formato del
siglo XVIII con una escena de caza.
CIUDAD RODRIGO REOPENS ITS DOORS
Paradores is reopening one of its oldest hotels after being
closed for almost eight months due to renovation work. The
intervention has allowed for a profound improvement and
modernization of most spaces, without losing the essence of
the Paradores brand and of a building that has been part of the
network since 1931.
The remodeling has been based on all the bathrooms of the
building, which have been adapted for people with disabilities
or reduced mobility, both in the 34 rooms and in the common
toilets. The interior carpentry and air conditioning systems have
also been renovated, in addition to the layout of new plumbing
and electrical installations and the installation of new coverings,
sanitary ware, faucets, mirrors, lighting, and accessories—all with
materials in keeping with the essence of the place.

Other improvements have included, as the unification of the
cafeteria and the restaurant through the construction of parti-
tions, with the total renovation of floors in these spaces, as well
as in the reception and the skylight, where radiant heating has
been installed. In addition, a new junior suite has been created
by redistributing two rooms; the bathroom and living room of the
tower room have been reorganized, and accessibility and per-
meability adaptations have been made.

In the 34 rooms, furniture from the Parador has been combined 103
with other from different establishments of the hotel chain.

All have been restored and complemented with new furniture,
lighting, and textiles. In the superior rooms, special attention
has been paid to the walls, using wallpaper, and carpets have
been designed and manufactured to give the corridors more
warmth. Great emphasis has also been placed on the art collec-
tion, which has been expanded with a selection of thirty pieces,
including a carving of a Castilian king from the 18th century, a
large Flemish tapestry from the late 17th century depicting the
goddess Cybele, and a spectacular 18th-century large-format
painting of a hunting scene.

Tanto si eres un peregrino terminando el Camino como si eres un
turista de paso, lo primero es lo primero: situarte en el medio de la
plaza del Obradoiro y observar tranquilamente lo que tienes delan-

te: la Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, uno de los edificios reli-

giosos más emblemáticos y conocidos de España y del mundo. Una
vez dentro al pasar por la parte trasera del Altar Mayor es obligado

hacer cola para abrazar la figura del apóstol, antiguo ritual había

sido suspendido por la pandemia y que recientemente se ha vuelto
a retomar. Y antes de abandonar el templo, visitar el espectacular

Pórtico de la Gloria, obra cumbre de la escultura románica, y subir a

las cubiertas de la Catedral, desde donde admirar todos los tejados
y la monumentalidad de la ciudad, así como contemplar de cerca la
Torre del Reloj uno de los símbolos más emblemáticos y carismáti-
cos de todo el edifico.

Cada día, hay varios horarios de Misas del Peregrino (07:30, 09:30,
12:00 y a las 19:30 h) y en fechas muy concretas de calendario litúrgi-
co se puede ver en acción el mítico botafumeiro de la Catedral. Este
inmenso incensario comenzó a usarse para enmascarar el olor de
los peregrinos, pesa más de 50kg y alcanza una velocidad de unos 70
km/h. Verlo es toda una experiencia.

Lo segundo es recorrer las rúas y plazas del casco histórico tranqui-

de los monumentos–,audioguías y visitas guiadas. No hay que olvi-

dar disfrutar del ambiente de la Plaza del Obradoiro y dejarse sor-
prender por uno de los edificios más icónicos del lugar: el Hospital
de los Reyes Católicos (conocido como Hostal dos Reis Católicos y
actual Parador de Turismo). Fue construido en puro estilo plateresco
tras la visita de los Reyes Católicos a Santiago de Compostela, con la
intención de acoger a los peregrinos que, finalizado el Camino, nece-
sitaran auxilio. Hoy es uno de los paradores más emblemáticos de la
Red. Según las fechas, se organizan visitas guiadas a este imponente
edificio lleno de historia.

Whether you are a pilgrim finishing the Camino or a tourist passing
through, first things first: stand in the middle of the Plaza del Obradoiro
and calmly observe what you have in front of you: the Cathedral of
Santiago de Compostela, one of the most emblematic and famous
religious buildings in Spain and the world. Once inside, when you pass by
the back of the High Altar, you must queue up to embrace the figure of
the apostle, an ancient ritual that was suspended during the pandemic
and has recently been resumed. And before leaving the temple, visit the
spectacular Pórtico de la Gloria, a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture,
and go up to the top of the Cathedral, from where you can admire all
the roofs and the monumentality of the city, as well as contemplate the
Clock Tower, one of the most charismatic symbols of the whole building.
Every day, there are several Pilgrim's Masses (07:30, 09:30, 12:00, and
19:30 h) and on very specific dates in the liturgical calendar you can see
the Cathedral's mythical botafumeiro in action. This immense censer,
which began to be used to mask the smell of the pilgrims, weighs more
than 50 kg and reaches a speed of 70 km/h. Seeing it is quite an
experience.
The second thing to do is to stroll around the streets and squares of the

historic center in peace and quiet. The Santiago Tourist Offices offer
an official map guide of the city, which suggests a route to follow and

For lunch or dinner
The Hostal dos Reis Católicos, an exponent of Galician
cuisine, has two dining areas that are a must: the
Restaurante dos Reis and the Enxebre. The first, with a
surprising dining room, offers a cuisine where the product
is the protagonist, washed down with a good wine from any
of the five Galician DOs. The second, more informal, offers
traditional Galician cuisine, with flavor and authenticity

In the afternoon
A visit to the Cidade da Cultura de Galicia (CdC) is a must

El Charco Azul (Valencia)

El río Turia ha creado impresionantes cañones y barrancos
en su tránsito por el Parque Natural de Los Calderones, en la
provincia de Valencia. Uno de los lugares más espectaculares
es el Charco Azul, una presa construida por los árabes para
regar las huertas, que hoy se ha convertido en una zona de
baño popular. El agua posee un color azulado por el fondo de
piedra caliza. Sorprende un hermoso embarcadero desde el
que poder saltar. Se puede llegar al Charco Azul desde el pueblo
de Chulilla, siguiendo el sendero SL-CV72. La zona ofrece otras
actividades como el barranquismo, la escalada o la ruta de los
puentes colgantes, que atraviesa el cañón del Turia por dos
pasarelas suspendidas a más de 15 metros de altura.

La Praia da Barbeira (Baiona)

La Praia da Barbeira se esconde en Baiona, localidad costera

de Pontevedra,De arena fina y dorada, se extiende a los pies
de la Fortaleza de Monterreal, una impresionante fortaleza
amurallada que que alberga el Parador de Turismo. La playa
está resguardada por la bahía, que regala aguas cristalinas
y tranquilas. Además, cuenta con bandera azul y todos los
servicios necesarios para pasar un día inolvidable en familia.
Es posible practicar deportes acuáticos, pasear por el baluarte
del Cantiño o disfrutar de la espectacular naturaleza de los

Discover an oasis of beauty and freshness in the Ambroz Valley.
These three pools of emerald water are surprising because of their
whimsical shape and natural environment. They are located near
the town of Hervás, which is accessed by a marked trail from the
recreational area of the Garganta de la Olla. Its crystal clear waters,

The Charco Azul (Valencia)
The Turia River has created impressive canyons and ravines in its
transit through the Natural Park of Los Calderones, in the province
of Valencia. One of the most spectacular places is the Charco Azul,
a dam built by the Arabs to irrigate the orchards, which today has
become a popular bathing area. The water has a bluish color due
to the limestone bottom. It surprises a beautiful jetty from which to
jump. Charco Azul can be reached from the town of Chulilla, following
the SL-CV72 trail. The area offers other activities such as canyoning,
climbing or the hanging bridges route, which crosses the Turia canyon
by two footbridges suspended more than 15 meters high.

The Praia da Barbeira (Baiona)

The Praia da Barbeira is hidden in Baiona, a coastal town of Pontevedra.

With fine golden sand, it stretches at the foot of the Fortress of
Monterreal, an impressive walled fortress that houses the Parador

clear and calm waters. It also has a blue flag and all the necessary

Hoy perviven en España más de treinta modos dife-

rentes de toque manual de campanas. Un vocabula-
rio sonoro que viene de la Edad Media y que cuidaban
con mimo los campaneros, artífices de un oficio que,
en la mayoría de los casos, era heredado de padres a
hijos. Solía reservarse a hombres de campo con mu-

ñecas gruesas y brazos fornidos. La actividad requería

dedicación y cierto oído musical para apreciar distin-
tos sones y corregirlos, acelerando o ralentizando la
velocidad del golpeo del badajo o martillo exterior. El

Todavía se guardan como un tesoro en puntos dis-

del Pirineo catalán, pasando por pequeños pueblos de

León y Zamora. Los tañidos de las campanas siguen
llamando a fuego, a bautizo, a boda, a funeral, a conce-
jo o a trabajos comunitarios. Antiguamente, también
eran una forma de entender el tiempo. En León, por
ejemplo, tres toques diarios marcaban el devenir de
los vecinos. Al amanecer, el toque de alba o alborada
anunciaba el comienzo de la jornada de trabajo. A las
doce del mediodía, el ángelus llamaba a la oración y
anunciaba el tiempo de almuerzo. Y al atardecer, el to-
que de oración invitaba al recogimiento en casa y dar
gracias a Dios por el día disfrutado.

El sonido de las campanas era también una seña de

identidad. Cada localidad añadía sus particularidades
y estilos al toque de campanas. En Cataluña se pre-

fería bandearlas, sin que llegaran a dar la vuelta del

todo. En Valencia, girar la campana, para producir un
sonido potente y ruidoso. En Asturias, acompañarla
del sonido de jotas tradicionales. En Galicia, se busca-
ban toques más melancólicos, mientras que en el sur
o en Levante se preferían más jubilosos.

¿De qué depende el sonido? En general, de la aleación

de los metales empleados en la elaboración de las cam-
panas. También de la forma del instrumento y, por en-
cima de todo, del manejo del campanero.

Today, more than thirty different ways of manually ringing bells sur-

vive in Spain. A sound vocabulary that dates back to the Middle
Ages and which was carefully cared for by bell ringers, the archi-
tects of a trade that, in most cases, was inherited from father to
son. It used to be reserved for country men with thick wrists and
strong arms. The activity required dedication and a certain musical
ear to appreciate different sounds and to correct them by speeding

up or slowing down the speed of the clapper or outer hammer. The
wide repertoire of nuances and techniques - turning or half-turning,
single strikes on one or several bells - organised the uses and cus-
toms of the festive, working, religious and daily life of a population

far removed from urban and technological noise. 125

They are still kept like a treasure in scattered points of the Span-
ish geography: from the Valencian municipality of Albaida to Os
de Baraguer, in the foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees, passing
through small villages in León and Zamora. The tolling of the
bells continues to call for a fire, a baptism, a wedding, a funeral, a
council, or community work. In the past, they were also a way of
understanding time. In León, for example, three daily tolls would
mark the future of the neighbours. At dawn, the «toque de alba»
or «alborada» announced the beginning of the working day. At
noon, the «Ángelus» would call to prayer and announce lunch-
time. And at dusk, the prayer call invited people to retire to their
homes and thank God for the day they had enjoyed.

The sound of the bells was also a sign of identity. Each locali-
ty added its own particularities and styles to the ringing of the
bells. In Catalonia, the preference was to ring the bells with-

out turning them all the way round. In Valencia, the bells were
turned to produce a powerful and noisy sound. In Asturias, it
was accompanied by the sound of traditional jotas. In Galicia,
more melancholic tolls were sought, while in the south or in
Levante, more jubilant ones were preferred.

What does the sound depend on? In general, it depends on the

alloy of the metals used to make the bells. It also depends on
the shape of the instrument and, above all, on the handling of
the bell ringer.

templos que las albergan. Otras han alcanzado fama mun-
dial por su tamaño, resonancia e, incluso, por sus campa-
neros acróbatas, como los de Utrera, que no solo voltean
las campanas a mano, sino que se suben a ellas y utilizan
su propio cuerpo como polea, generando un impactante
espectáculo.

En muchos lugares, las campanas de antaño se accionan

con sistemas automatizados eléctricos, que facilitan el tra-
bajo, pero enfrían su tañido y le restan emoción y senti-
miento. La mayoría ha dejado de oírse desde el alto del
campanario o desde la espadaña, porque el último campa-
nero se jubiló sin encontrar sustituto. O porque el pueblo
languideció y perdió a sus vecinos.

El pasado diciembre, la Unesco incorporó el toque manual

de campanas español a la Lista Representativa de Patri-

monio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad, destacando
que «se transmite de los campaneros a las generaciones
más jóvenes y a través de grupos u organizaciones de
campaneros que, además de documentar e investigar la
práctica, también tocan, transmiten, instruyen y difunden
el arte del toque tradicional de las campanas. La mayoría

Los guardianes de las campanas

Fabricadas a base de cobre y estaño, las campanas fueron
un botín preciado en las guerras. Durante la Guerra Civil
española, los ejércitos de ambos bandos precisaban mate-
rial bélico para construir armas y cañones y utilizaron las
campanas para este cometido. Pueblos de Cataluña, como
Calvinyà, en el Alt Urgell, se sublevaron para que al menos
una de las dos campanas no les fuese arrebatada. En la lo-
calidad leonesa de Foncebadón, María y su hijo Ángel, eran
en 1993 los únicos moradores del pueblo que acoge una de
las etapas más duras del Camino de Santiago. Cuando las

autoridades civiles y eclesiásticas reclamaron las campanas

para llevarlas a un museo, María les recibió con piedras,
un palo y una advertencia: «No se llevarán las campanas de
este pueblo. Aquí no tenemos teléfono ni casi nada… Si se
quema el pueblo o nos ocurre algo, ¿cómo avisamos a los
pueblos vecinos?». También en el Camino francés, Villavan-
te, otra localidad leonesa, se empeña en mantener vivo en
el lenguaje de las campanas y, desde 1986, mantiene una
escuela que trabaja en la recuperación del oficio y de los
repiques y en la organización de un encuentro nacional de
campaneros que suma adeptos en cada edición.
Some bells are as famous as the churches or temples
that house them. Others have achieved worldwide fame
for their size, resonance and even for their acrobatic bell-
ringers, such as those from Utrera, who not only turn the
bells by hand, but also climb on them and use their own
body as a pulley, creating a stunning spectacle.

In many places, the old bells are operated by automated

electrical systems, which make the work easier, but cool
down the ringing and take away emotion and feeling. Most
of them have ceased to be heard from the top of the bell
tower or from the belfry, because the last bell ringer retired
without finding a replacement. Or because the village lan-
guished and lost its neighbours.

Last December, Unesco added Spanish handbell ringing

to the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity, noting that "it is transmitted from bell ringers
to younger generations and through groups or organisa-
tions of bell ringers who, in addition to documenting and
researching the practice, also ring, transmit, instruct and
disseminate the art of traditional bell ringing. Most of the

people who pass on this knowledge are themselves young
people who try to recruit new enthusiasts to continue the
practice". This recognition is not trivial and will provide pro-
tection for the future. The bell ringers and enthusiasts of

this tradition defend its continuity. If customs like this are

lost, they say, a part of our history is also lost.

The guardians of the bells
Made from copper and tin, bells were a prized booty in wars.
During the Spanish Civil War, the armies of both sides need-
ed war material to build guns and cannons and used bells
for this purpose. Towns in Catalonia, such as Calvinyà, in Alt
Urgell, rose up in revolt so that at least one of the two bells
would not be taken away from them. In the town of Fonce-
badón in the province of León, María and her son Ángel,
were in 1993 the only inhabitants of the village that hosts
one of the hardest stages of the Way of St. James. When the
civil and ecclesiastical authorities demanded the bells to be

taken to a museum, María met them with stones, a stick

and a warning: "You will not take the bells from this village.
Here we don't have a telephone or almost anything... if the
village burns down or something happens to us, how do we
warn the neighbouring villages? Also on the French Route,
Villavante, another town in León, is determined to keep alive
the language of the bells and, since 1986, has maintained
a school that works on the recovery of the trade and the
peals and the organisation of a national meeting of bell ring-
ers that attracts more and more followers with each edition.

El monte de San Vicente del Pino en Monforte de Lemos ha sido, desde tiempo ancestral, lugar

El primer intento de promoción del Parador fue la convo-

catoria de un concurso nacional de anteproyectos en 1973.
El edificio de nueva planta debía asentarse en la parcela
del castillo, que conservaba tan solo restos de la muralla
perimetral, con algún cubo adosado. El anteproyecto ga-
nador acopló el exigente programa, de doscientas plazas
hoteleras, en una propuesta de gran plasticidad, que evo-
caba la silueta de un castillo. Un auténtico rascacielos de
ocho plantas, ubicado en el punto más alto de la ciudad,
con muros de mampostería u hormigón. El proyecto fue
alabado por su calidad arquitectónica, pero quedó en una
mera propuesta sobre el papel.

Se trata de obras de arte variadas, que incluyen, desde

The Benavente Parador reopens

The Parador of Benavente reopened its doors in June after being
closed for seven months for a thorough remodeling, which has
allowed an update and improvement of all its spaces, without
losing the essence of the historic building and the Paradores
brand. The intervention has been based on the comprehensive

areas. A long awaited project, whose opening included the
exhibition of a 19th century painting loaned by the "Ledo del
