A ‘check showed the cow! was a bit malnour- ished ata bare ten inches diameter, but the 05.200 would JUST fit, with possibly @ fraction to spare, So what to build? Our local WW 1 flyers have many models of Sopwith Pups, Sopwith Trplane and Camels, umpteen Fokker Triplanes, almost fas many Eindeokers and a variety of Nisuport 11s and 173 - plus, of course, the Proctor kitted Nieuport 29, The last would 80.5” uport 27 your (2045mm) have been my choice, based on this, ‘model's exesllent flying characteristics, but T doubted | could build better fying example of the type and even then, most ‘observers would have thought it was a Proctor kt anyway! So | settled for the Nieuport 27 as being something a litle different - 2 sort of Nieuport 17 in Nieuport 28 clothes, with a relatively long (in WW1 terms) in-service history and a variety of colour schemes fram which te choose. The Nieuport 27 described This was the last of the Nieuport one-and: s-half-winged (sesquiplane) designs that Started its development life as just @ Nieuport 17 fitted with a nine-cylinder 190 hip. Cleget engine in place of the 110 hp. seven-evlinder Le Rhone. Even without the extra 20 hp, the Nieuport basic airframe, which did not change, was suspect at high speeds, This led to a bewildering series of modifications ‘nd re-designations which are well detailed inthe Windsock Dstafle Special by the late IM. Bruce. ‘The structural problems experienced are usually blamed on the lower wing, but | Petes * on ty winter wingspan, for ‘almost guaranteed to produce flutter at ‘anything approaching 150 mph. This was Partly alleviated by rounding off the tips of the ailerons. Ac the same time, the factory was also trying new tail surfaces af plywood and timber construction, replacing the Nieuport 1's simple steel tube and fabric surfaces, no doubt inspired by the opposition German Scouts, such as the Albatros series, which featured cantilever tall sur- faces, the new Nisupor tail suffered a long development during most of 1917, possibly due to flutter problems. The final fix was to add wire bracing to the fin and tailplane, with a consequent increase in drag, which negated the pur pose of the development.
