El espacio físico en la biblioteca

EL ESPACIO

El fácil acceso a la información a través de medios digitales está desafiado las

funciones sociales que han venido desarrollando a lo largo de su historia las bibliotecas
públicas ¿Cuál es el papel de una biblioteca cuando los usuarios pueden obtener
información desde cualquier lugar? ¿Y qué significa este cambio de rol para la creación
y el diseño del espacio de la biblioteca? Ahora más que nunca se hace
necesario repensar los roles, repensar el espacio. Desde mediados de la década de 1990,
las bibliotecas están reorientado sus servicios hacia la participación pública más allá de
los servicios tradicionales como el préstamo y lectura. En la actualidad, las bibliotecas
ofrecen una gama creciente de actividades creativas focalizadas hacia la comunidad. Por
ello, los espacios de la biblioteca se están transformando. Además de libros y materiales
de préstamo, mesas y espacios de lectura, las bibliotecas se convierte en espacios
flexibles más orientados hacia el desarrollo de actividades creativas. Teniendo en cuenta
estas transformaciones, la contribución que hacen las bibliotecas a sus comunidades es
el elemento clave del nuevo concepto de biblioteca.

 Al igual que otras bibliotecas de investigación en todo el mundo tratan
de reinventar sus espacios y servicios, la Georgia Tech Library está a la vanguardia
en la definición de lo que significa ser una biblioteca de investigación innovadora,
centrada en el usuario, las nuevas necesidades de la investigación y el
aprendizaje para el siglo 21. Como instituto de investigación Georgia Tech
necesita una biblioteca de que se adapte a las nuevas necesidades informativa de

biblioteca es un plan de 5 años para transformar los servicios y espacios de la
Biblioteca para que se adecue al entorno cambiante de la investigación, la

historia las bibliotecas públicas. Desde mediados de la década de 1990, las

bibliotecas ofrecen una gama creciente de actividades creativas focalizadas hacia
la comunidad. Por ello, los espacios de la biblioteca se están transformando.
Además de libros y materiales de préstamo, mesas y espacios de lectura, las
bibliotecas se convierte en espacios flexibles más orientados hacia el desarrollo
de actividades creativas. Teniendo en cuenta estas transformaciones, la
contribución que hacen las bibliotecas a sus comunidades es el elemento clave
del nuevo concepto de biblioteca. En 2015, la Biblioteca del Estado de
Queensland (SLQ) encargó a un grupo de investigadores del Centro de
Investigación de Medios de Comunicación Digital de la Universidad Tecnológica
de Queensland (QUT) analizar el papel y el impacto de las bibliotecas como
espacios creativos, proporcionando evidencias claras de este impacto y
articulando las oportunidades para integrar aún más los espacios creativos en las
bibliotecas públicas como espacios comunitarios.

Civica is involved in ongoing research into the evolution of local

government based resources in particular, and as part of these efforts, Civica
Libraries engaged the UTS: Institute for Public Policy and Governance to
undertake research into the value of libraries as public spaces.. Public libraries are
thriving and, by embracing digital technologies, library memberships continue to
grow in line with and in some cases ahead of population growth. The library has
evolved into a hub around which the community grows, learns and
communicates. It provides the space and the intellectual glue to allow
communities, close knit urban and sparsely spread rural, to cohere and interact.
This report looks at key issues which will need to be addressed to ensure libraries
remain a central part of community life.

In March 2015, Sasaki Associates asked academic librarians to respond to

a 90-question survey about their responsibilities and the adequacy of their
public-facing and private work spaces. This report illuminates some of the

The growing concern about and increasing interest in sustainable built

environments is changing the agenda of academic libraries. An academic library
is defined as a library attached to a higher education institution for two
complementary purposes: to support the school's curricula and to support the
research of faculty and students (Curzon & Quinonez-Skinner, 2009). Thus,
academic libraries serve as the core of the three ‘E's of the future: economy,
ecology and equity (Jankowska & Marcum, 2010). These three dynamics are also
key issues in sustainability, which must ensure the occupants’ safety, health,
comfort and satisfaction, ‘while meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ (United
Nations Brundtland Commission, 1987, 41). Now and for the future, sustainable
design must be part of library operations, collection developments and service
provision (Jankowska & Marcum, 2010). In this context, most recent researchers
are identifying a variety of factors that threaten the sustainability of academic
libraries: How can academic libraries continue to grow while minimising their
impact on the environment? Since special collections and archives are at the
heart of academic libraries, researchers are concerned with this question in
regard to strict climate-control requirements for collection preservation.
Moreover, making those collections available in an equitable way, supplying
unique materials for all, supporting their documents digitally and maintaining
indoor air quality within the framework of sustainable strategies differentiate
special collections spaces from other library spaces. This paper addresses these
challenges through a user-centered design approach based on three stages. First,
user needs were elucidated through an importance-assessment questionnaire
given to 240 interior architecture student participants. Second, the participants
were asked on a volunteer basis to develop architectural solutions for the special
collection at Bilkent University Library based on sustainable design principles. In
the last stage, the solution alternatives were assessed and systematised to
identify key green design attributes for special collections.

The skepticism about libraries’ future, and the troubles in financing them,
come from a combination of long-term processes and recent fiscal crisis. The
modern public library is the product of the XIX-century commitment to spread
literacy and widen the base of modern state. Today, the proliferation of supports
for culture/entertainment products and the individualization of almost-free
delivery through smart-phones, iPads and the like make the library appear
obsolete. The author of the article argues, however, that the library’s function as
an infrastructure of democracy remains intact.

El nuevo contexto de aprendizaje e investigación que determina el

Espacio Europeo de Enseñanza Superior, junto con un nuevo modelo de relación
entre biblioteca-usuario que viene planteándose desde hace ya algunos años con
las tecnologías de información, consagra la formación en información como una
de las líneas estratégicas básicas en el futuro de los servicios bibliotecarios
universitarios, y así lo reconoce el II Plan Estratégico REBIUN 2007-2010. Esto
conlleva la implicación de la biblioteca en la elaboración de materiales de apoyo,
y un esfuerzo del personal de los servicios de información para capacitarse
adecuadamente. Hay que orientar la formación inicial y continuada en aspectos
relativos a didáctica, usabilidad, y conocimiento de diversas herramientas,
 especialmente aquellas basadas en software libre como ExeLearning y
CamStudio. Se presentan algunas experiencias iniciadas en este ámbito.

L’article pretén mostrar com els serveis bibliotecaris de la Universitat

Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) gestionen els canvis i les oportunitats de l’entorn
(universitat, informació electrònica, etc.) per convertir les seves biblioteques en
centres actius de suport a l’aprenentatge i a la recerca universitària. Després de
presentar l’escenari universitari actual s’explicarà el camí que han iniciat les
biblioteques de la UPC per assolir conceptualment i en els seus serveis el primer
gran repte del mil·lenni: transformar la biblioteca universitària tradicional en un
veritable centre de recursos per al suport a la docència i la recerca acadèmiques.

Las nuevas tecnologías de la información forman parte ya de nuestra vida
cotidiana. El software libre nos permite la participación a auténticas comunidades
de aprendizaje, con la idea central de una sociedad cada vez más democrática y
con libre acceso. El relación con la educación existen desde hace varios años
muchas experiencias en las que el software libre es un punto de partida para la
colaboración virtual. Deseamos mostrar las posibilidades que este tipo de
software pone a nuestro alcance para la mejora de la innovación docente, bajo su
filosofía de trabajo facilitando la adaptación de nuestras clases.

 Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether virtual
space can be used to alleviate physical space constraints for group collaboration
in an urban academic library environment. Specifically, this paper looks to
uncover whether library users will turn to library-provided virtual space when
there is a scarcity of physical space. Design/methodology/approach – This project
discusses the design of the physical and virtual environment, and then measures
the use of this environment quantitatively over a 47-month period (2005-2009).
Findings – Results indicate that physical spaces for group collaboration are in
very high demand, whereas virtual ones are not. A scarcity of physical
collaboration spaces does not lead users to library-provided virtual space, but
rather to work around the scarcity in the physical world. Originality/value – The
paper highlights the value of the library as a gathering place and the ways in
which virtual collaboration space cannot easily take the place of physical
collaboration space.

Las bibliotecas ya existían cuando nacieron las universidades. La

confluencia y simbiosis organizativa entre estas instituciones fue inevitable y
prácticamente de forma simultánea al surgimiento de las universidades
medievales europeas las bibliotecas empezaron a ser parte de la fisonomía y
arquitectura intelectual de las mismas. Ambas convergían en la necesidad de
transmitir y enriquecer el conocimiento existente utilizando el libro como la
principal herramienta de trabajo. La erudición, el saber racional, la búsqueda de la
verdad y la formación de las nuevas generaciones han sido siempre santo y seña
del mundo de las bibliotecas y de las universidades. Y ambas sintieron la
necesidad de fusionarse de forma que una universidad era inconcebible sin una
biblioteca propia.

 De nouveaux modèles d'espaces publics, ouverts sur la communauté et
favorisant la collaboration et l'apprentissage, sont en émergence partout dans le
monde. Parmi eux, les coworkings, fab labs et living labs sont en plein essor, alors
qu'en parallèle, de nombreux cafés de quartier se transforment naturellement en
espaces conviviaux d'étude, de travail et de tenue d'événements : événements
littéraires, conférences, universités populaires, et ainsi de suite. Toutes ces
initiatives ont souvent en commun d'être réalisées pour le bien de la collectivité
de manière totalement ouverte et transparente. L'article se veut une introduction
à cet écosystème d'espaces et pratiques émergentes, et pose la question suivante
: quels rôles les bibliothèques publiques peuvent-elles jouer dans ce nouvel
environnement ?

Actualmente se está produciendo un cambio de paradigma en la

enseñanza universitaria que pasa de un sistema basado en la docencia a un
sistema enfocado al aprendizaje. Las bibliotecas universitarias han de evolucionar
hacia un nuevo modelo que las sitúe en la posición óptima para cumplir su
misión de dar soporte a la investigación, a la docencia y —ahora más que
nunca— al aprendizaje. Para favorecer el aprendizaje las bibliotecas han de
combinar sus servicios tradicionales con otros que convergen en los
denominados Centros de Recursos para el Aprendizaje y la Investigación. Se
revisa este concepto y se analizan los resultados de una encuesta que sobre este
tema se ha llevado a cabo entre los directores de las bibliotecas universitarias
españolas durante los meses de febrero y marzo de 2003.

This brief research paper was undertaken to determine whether the

digitization of information (and other new technological processes) will provide
any future space savings for the undergraduate academic library. While the
author found evidence that the rate of growth for shelving space in some areas
such as reference and periodicals may decline, he found just as much evidence
that technology itself is increasing space requirements for the modern library. A
concluding table summarizes the probable impact of technology on future space
needs for the various major library functions; it shows no clear evidence that
technology will help ameliorate such increased needs.

 This multi-site ethnographic case study examines the spatial
arrangements of two public library makerspaces. These spaces are participatory
social and spatial arrangements aimed at least in part at creating physical or
digital objects, which are open for the free use of all library patrons, irrespective
of the types of workshops, tools, staffing, materials created, or location. Library
creative places shape the possible actions and experiences of those using them
through policy and practice, including the planning and implementation of
spatial arrangements. Power relations are often invisibly embedded in the
affordances intentionally or unintentionally designed into the spaces. This study
examines these spatial arrangements and inquires how users and library
personnel describe the impacts of the space. It details how two makerspaces in
public libraries serve their communities in novel ways, and offers transferable,
praxis-based recommendations for spatial arrangements which reflect
equitably-shared power relations among the library-as-institution, the library
personnel, and the users. Furthermore, it describes how users co-construct their
libraries through their hands-on making activities, helping to redefine what
libraries are and librarians do.

At the Universiteit van Amsterdam the developments in the field of ICT

have led to major changes in the organisation of supportive services for
education and research. The consequences are particularly significant for the
library, which sees itself transformed from a ‘passive’ source of information into
an active multimedia knowledge provider. The development of Learning
Resources Centres, supported by the library, is in full swing and it is fascinating to
see the close collaboration evolving between faculty, IT specialists,
communication professionals, library staff and publishers. The measure of success
proves to relate strongly to the physical design and furnishing of the location,
which is in turn determined by the given architectural - and financial -
parameters. The didactical concept is the leading principle.

Los efectos de la innovación tecnológica han sido rápidos, significativos y

bien documentados; en consecuencia las bibliotecas han respondido
positivamente a estos cambios en función de la forma en que la gente lee,
comunica e investiga proporcionando contenido digital y renovando los espacios
para apoyar las nuevas necesidades de trabajo y de información de sus usuarios.
Cada vez más universidades ofertan cursos "híbridos", "aulas inversas" y
"aprendizaje activo", Los profesores facilitan el acceso a materiales en línea y
comprometen a los estudiantes con la exploración grupal y la resolución de
problemas durante el tiempo de clase. Las aulas están cambiando para apoyar
nuevas pedagogías: los espacios informales de aprendizaje ya están presentes en
muchas universidades. Tecnólogos instructivos y otros especialistas apoyan a sus
comunidades de enseñanza e investigación con aplicaciones, dispositivos y la
creación de actividades de aprendizaje en línea. Este informe de Ithaka S +
R es un estudio de caso describe una iniciativa de la Universidad de Tecnología
de Sydney (UTS) para dar forma a espacios para nuevos tipos de enseñanza y
aprendizaje. Por ello se han adaptado y construido espacios y edificios
innovadores han en en su campus en los últimos años, cuyo objetivo es apoyar

The Getting It System Toolkit (GIST), a suite of free and open source tools
& software, leverages systems to optimize library acquisitions and deselection
workflow, reducing the staff time necessary to make informed decisions and
process materials. The Toolkit is divided into two functions: GIST for ILLiad
consists of three components that enhance the ILLiad® interlibrary loan request
management software: addons, webpage customizations, and the acquisitions
manager. All three components may be selectively utilized in ILLiad, for instance,
ILLiad web pages may be applied to enhance the end-user request interface to
add full-text discovery, or an ILLiad Addon can help ILL’s purchase on demand
program discover the best way to purchase items difficult to borrow. By
combining all three and customizing these components for your library, you
achieve significant benefits and optimize the combination of Acquisitions and ILL
services. The GIST Gift & Deselection Manager (GDM) is designed to manage and
streamline library workflow for processing gifts and evaluating materials for
weeding. It is standalone open-source software that automates the gathering of
data for evaluating donations; including holdings, edition comparisons, full-text,
and other data. The GDM also enables collection managers to perform
item-by-item deselection or use the batch analysis tool to create custom
deselection reports for large weeding projects. Building Responsive Library
Collections with the Getting It System Toolkit combines helpful how-tos from the
developers themselves, and first-hand implementation accounts from users of
these time-saving tools. The volume is split into the Toolkit’s use with ILLiad and
GDM, providing easy reference for users. This manual is an invaluable resource to
any library using, or considering using, the Getting It System Toolkit.

confortable. La focalisation sur les services présentiels au sein de l’établissement
ne doit pas faire oublier qu’un grand nombre de nos concitoyens n’accèdent pas
à ces services, non tant par ignorance que par éloignement physique, social ou
culturel. Accompagner ces publics éloignés suppose d’imaginer la bibliothèque
comme une base d’opérations extérieures, un point de départ vers le service d’un
territoire. Imaginer le « hors-les-murs » impose de mettre en œuvre des pratiques
innovantes, parfois modestes mais toujours créatives, d’élaborer des projets

growth rates. At the University of Miami, two tools were developed to adequately

current crisis of libraries all over the world. Still, while in the rest of the world the
debate is focused on the library social value, in Italy “welfare” have become a key
word, suggesting that public libraries could be (or rather should be) considered
as part of the welfare state. After trying to clarify what we talk about when we talk
about “welfare” and “library”, the article shows how the crisis often becomes an
opportunity to reflect on the future of libraries, and how – in this future – the
social role of the library seems to play a leading part. Yet, the question is whether
this social role could or rather should be considered as welfare.

FabLabs, o laboratorios de fabricación, que ya tienen presencia en 35

países. Allí los estudiantes cuentan con recursos casi ilimitados para prototipar y
desarrollar sus inventos. Es un lugar mágico para personas con gran
imaginación. En aquel momento quedé flechado y entendí que este tipo de
espacios es indispensable para mover los emprendimientos tecnológicos en
nuestra región. Pero no todo se reduce al MIT. En esencia los FabLabs son lo
mismo que los Makerspaces, que sería el término más genérico. Éstos espacios
tienen origen en los hackerspaces, lugares donde se puede crear de todo usando
la tecnología. Éstos últimos ya existían en Alemania en los ’90, y su ejemplo más
conocido es C-base, pero tenían unos recursos limitados Sin embargo, en el 2006
surgió Metalab, en Viena, con un nuevo modelo de financiamiento, y nació
Hackerspaces.org. A partir de entonces se han creado más de 1000 hackerspaces,
y el concepto ha ido evolucionando hasta el de Makerspace, influenciado por la
revista Make, y sus Maker Faires.

architecture of the Library of Congress Building (known since 1980 as the Thomas
Jefferson Building) in the late 1960s, when I was researching and writing my PhD
dissertation about Ainsworth Rand Spofford, the energetic Librarian of Congress
from 1864 to 1897. The new building was a crucial step in Spofford’s
transformation of the Congressional Library into a national institution that also
served the American public. When it moved from its overcrowded rooms in the
U.S. Capitol to its new home in late 1897, the Library of Congress represented an
unparalleled national achievement: its twenty-three-carat-gold-plated dome
capped the largest and costliest library building in the world. Its carefully planned
and ebullient interior linked the United States to classical traditions of learning
and simultaneously flexed American cultural and technological muscle.

Space: An Update on Syracuse University Libraries’ Journals Migration Project.”
Written by K. Matthew Dames, Roberta Gwilt, Scott Warren and TC Carrier, the
report documents the progress on the relocation of print journals to the Syracuse
University Libraries Facility (the Facility) on South Campus.y To date, the libraries
have transferred more than 100,000 journal volumes from 7,000 titles to the
Facility, realizing $1,935,000 in savings over five years. In addition, libraries staff
maintain access to stored, lightly used scholarship stored at the Facility by
operating the “Library to Go” and “Articles to Go” services, which provide scanned
copies of online articles and six-day-per-week delivery of physical materials to
campus libraries and offices. One of the most crucial issues academic research
libraries face today is how to allocate our space portfolio between the often
competing demands of personal or group study and shelving of scholarly
resources,” says Dames, interim dean of the libraries. “As the libraries continue to
collaborate with various campus stakeholders to determine the proper mix
between seating and scholarship, we continue to leverage the Facility as a critical
asset that helps the libraries become more efficient while affecting access as little
as possible.” Other benefits of the project, which continues through summer
2015, include providing space for new books the libraries have purchased to

The complete reorganisation of the floor space at the Bibliotheque

When we think of voices in the library, we have tended to think of them

as disruptive, something to control and manage for the sake of the total library
environment. The stereotype of the shushing librarian pervades public
perception, creating expectations about the kinds of spaces libraries want to
create. Voices are not always disruptive, however. Indeed, developing an
academic voice is one of the main challenges facing incoming university students,
and libraries can play an important role in helping these students find their
academic voices. Two initiatives at two different academic libraries are explored
here: a Secrets Wall, where students are invited to write and share a secret during
exam time while seeing, reading, commenting on the secrets of others; and a
librarian and historian team-taught course called History on the Web, which
brings together information literacy and the study of history in the digital age.
This article examines both projects and considers how critical perspectives on
voice and identity might guide our instructional practices, helping students to
learn to write themselves into the university. Further, it describes how both the
Secrets Wall and the History on the Web projects intentionally create a kind of
“Third Space” designed specifically so students can enter it, negotiate with it,
interrogate it, and eventually come to be part of it.

fecha los países europeos han de tener en pleno funcionamiento un sistema
universitario que esté conforme con lo que establecen las resoluciones. El
proceso de convergencia de la enseñanza universitaria europea ha ido avanzando
de manera pausada y sistemática desde la Declaración de la Sorbona, que fue
firmada por los ministros de educación de Alemania, Francia, Italia y el Reino
Unido, y la de Bolonia —en la que ya participaron los ministros de 30 países—,
hasta el más reciente comunicado de Berlín3 (2003). La figura 1 muestra como los
distintos países europeos se han ido acogiendo al proceso de convergencia de la

As librarians reflect upon their role in supporting research, they should

seriously consider the issue of library space allocation. Because they serve the
entire educational community through planned programs of services and
resources within a structured learning space, libraries constitute a pivotal site for
self-directed intentional learning and research. How collections are arranged and
accessed influences which resources are used. Reference services, both for
just-in-time guidance and subject or process guides, can facilitate research
progress. The mix of flexible and dedicated spaces offers opportunities for
concentrated work. Especially as libraries try to the increase their value, one area
of concentration should be space to support research, assessing their current
effectiveness as perceived by a broad spectrum of stakeholders. Several studies
demonstrated ways to conduct needs assessment that can drive renovations and
reallocation of library space.

Reviews the outstanding exhibition entitled 'The Library in Wartime'

(Madrid National Library, November 2005-February 2006). Put together by Blanca
Calvo and Ramon Salaberria, the exhibition and its catalogue have at last broken
the silence on the generation of librarians who were working for the Spanish
Republic during the Civil War (1936-1939) , and who were forced by Franco's
Nationalists to flee into exile, or were executed. Despite many obstacles, Spanish
libraries in that wartime period developed radically both in collections
conservation and in self-promotion/marketing. Two opposing concepts of culture
and libraries fought for supremacy: the Republic built new libraries and fostered a
new concept of the library; but nationalist Spain did all it could to purge and
censor library collections. For decades after Franco's death there was a collective
failure among Spaniards to face up to the Civil War's brutalities, including those
of its library history. But today the new Spain has begun to do so. Original article

This report looks at how staff at eight academic institutions gained new
insight about how students and faculty use their libraries, and how the staff are
using these findings to improve library technologies, space, and services.
Participatory design is a relatively recent approach to understanding library user
behavior. It is based on techniques used in anthropological and ethnographic
observation. The report's editor, anthropologist Nancy Fried Foster, led several
participatory design workshops for CLIR from 2007 to 2013. The report is based
on a series of presentations at the second CLIR Seminar on Participatory Design
of Academic Libraries, held at the University of Rochester’s River Campus June
5-7, 2013. Chapters focus on projects at the University of Colorado, Boulder;
Colby College; University of Connecticut; Columbia University; Rush University
Medical Center; Purdue University; Northwestern University; and the University of
Rochester. David Lindahl, of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, provided the
keynote.

Tras hacer una breve reseña del proceso de puesta en marcha de la

Diplomatura en Biblioteconomía y Documentación y la Licenciatura en
Documentación, se describe el proceso de adaptación de estas titulaciones
universitarias al Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior. Se analiza el marco legal
desarrollado para la integración del sistema universitario español en el EEES, las
acciones realizadas por la Agencia Nacional de Evaluación de la Calidad y
Acreditación (ANECA), las decisiones tomadas por los distintos equipos
responsables de la política universitaria española y las iniciativas desarrolladas
por las distintas universidades dirigidas a diseñar y poner en marcha las nuevas
titulaciones de grado y posgrado. Por otro lado, se analizan las transformaciones
que han sufrido las prácticas profesionales en la denominada sociedad de la
información y la influencia ejercida por estas prácticas en los modelos formativos.
En líneas generales podría decirse que se ha pasado de unas prácticas
profesionales centradas en los documentos a otras enfocadas a la información.
Esto ha provocado que disciplinas surgidas en siglos anteriores (Archivística,
Biblioteconomía o Documentación) estén inmersas en un proceso de
convergencia en la denominada Ciencia de la Información. En este sentido se
analizan las competencias, módulos y materias contempladas en las tres
titulaciones de grado en Información y Documentación que han comenzado a
impartir el curso académico 2008-09 las universidades de Salamanca, Zaragoza y
Carlos III de Madrid. Adicionalmente se analizan los posgrados oficiales de
Información y Documentación que se imparten actualmente en España para
determinar las tendencias de los nuevos modelos formativos y el grado de
influencia de los modelos tradicionales.

deberían. Además, los grupos discutieron zonas de innovación, espacios
tranquilos y espacios de consulta. ¿La disponibilidad de nuevas instalaciones y la

diferentes tipos de asignaciones para la creación de contenido para estudiantes?

Como toda creación humana, las instituciones se transforman y

evolucionan con el paso del tiempo. Dicho principio afecta también a las
bibliotecas académicas, las cuales han debido cambiar constantemente para
responder a las necesidades de sus usuarios. El espacio físico de la biblioteca
académica es uno de los muchos aspectos marcados por el cambio, ejemplo de
lo cual son los espacios para el trabajo colaborativo en bibliotecas académicas,
mejor conocidos como Learning Commons en la literatura especializada. Este
trabajo tiene como propósito exponer las características de este modelo, para lo
cual se hará un breve recuento de la historia de la planeación y la construcción de
las bibliotecas académicas. Asimismo, se expondrá la manera en la cual se ha
implementado el esquema Learning Commons de la biblioteca del Instituto
Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), campus Monterrey
en México.

 La “Universitat de Barcelona”, de acuerdo con la nueva estructura
organizativa implantada en el año 2004, puso en funcionamiento el “Centre de
Recursos per a l’Aprenentatge i la Investigació” (CRAI) que integró a las
bibliotecas, el servicio de “Publicacions”, y las “Unitats de Suport a la Docència”
de la UB. En este marco, la “Unitat de Serveis als Usuaris” del CRAI fue la
responsable de llevar a cabo el proceso de integración del Soporte a la Docencia
y definir una estructura que recogiera los servicios ofrecidos hasta entonces al
personal docente de la UB y los ampliara y mejorara en la medida de lo posible.
Esta estructuración se llevó a cabo de manera coordinada con la “Unitat
d’Informació, Avaluació i Prospectiva”, el responsable del “Programa de Millora i
Innovació Docent” (PMID) y el “Àrea de Tecnologies” de la UB. El resultado del
proceso de reflexión y análisis común de la experiencia acumulada fue la creación
de 17 “Punts de Suport a la Docència” (PSD) ubicados en las diferentes
bibliotecas del CRAI y 2 “Unitats de Suport a la Docència” (USD), además de la
definición de una serie de estándares de trabajo para el asesoramiento y
elaboración de materiales docentes. Después de un año de funcionamiento se
presenta una valoración de los resultados obtenidos y las mejoras detectadas que
deberían ser activadas.

proceso de cambio sufrido por estas edificaciones a través de la historia,

categories of proposed solutions to the orphan works problem:
Remedy-limitation approaches, such as the one advocated in the 2006 U.S.
Copyright office proposal, that are predicated on a user’s good-faith, reasonable
search for rights holders; administrative systems, such as the one adopted in
Canada, that allow users to petition a centralized copyright board to license
specific reuses of orphan works; access and reuse solutions that are tailored to
rely upon the existing doctrine of fair use; and extended collective licensing
schemes, which permit collective management organizations ('CMOs') to license
the use of works that are not necessarily owned by CMO members, but that are
representative of the CMO members’ works.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the process by which a

library task force investigated and recommended services, best practices and
technology prior to moving into a vastly larger and more modern building than
its previous facility. Design/methodology/approach – A 12-member team was
appointed to study a wide range of practices and services in libraries and other
public institutions with similar missions and to issue a report on its findings and
recommendations. The team included faculty, staff and students with
backgrounds including public service, technology, human resources and space
design. Findings – The make-up of the team, as well as the methods of study,
provided for a wide range of possible recommendations and had a significant

limitations/implications – Other libraries, whether planning a new building or new
services, may utilize a similar team research method to develop an action plan.

Provided with an opportunity to design a new study space for students

during a library renovation, librarians and information technologists at Wesleyan
University, a small residential campus, teamed up to learn ethnographic
techniques and apply them by incorporating student input into the new space,
rather than making decisions based on traditional methods. Using this approach
produced enlightening information about students' differing behaviors and use
of campus space that the team used extensively in planning the new design.

 My library's new book shelf recently featured a striking new book edited
by Manuela Roth, Library architecture + design,1 which includes color photos of
new library spaces from around the world. I'm sure that other librarians share my
enthusiasm about the design of library buildings and find pleasure in looking at
library spaces while analyzing the design choices made in constructing new or
reconstructing old libraries. We have a longstanding tradition of library spaces
being beautiful as well as utilitarian, as evidenced by many websites featuring
"most beautiful libraries in the world" (just Google this phrase for several Internet
lists). We want libraries to fill our aesthetic desires perhaps because we spend so
much time in them. Libraries are places to come and linger, and so we expect
them to have spaces that are nice to look at as well as functional. The grand
reading room is one manifestation of this, where users work intently at wood
tables in a classically designed space, as is the colorful, happy children's room
which conveys to children the joy of reading. In both cases, the design
encourages the activity done in the room. For librarians, a successful space
combines the beautiful with the functional: we enjoy architectural excellence but
also seeing the choices made by architects and other librarians for how space will
be utilized to meet user needs and fulfill the library's mission to its community.

 Clearly articulating how an academic library inspires and transforms
teaching, learning and research is critical for library leadership. Conveying the
library’s deep expertise throughout the knowledge lifecycle (discovery, use,
creation, and sharing) and demonstrating its ability to provide solutions to
information problems are core to what an academic library brings to campus
collaborations. At the University of Minnesota, the Health Sciences Libraries have
developed a “Space as a Service” model of collaboration that positions them as a
vital component of a larger Interprofessional Learning and Education Center
within the University’s Academic Health Center. We describe and discuss six
fundamental principles that guide our vision of an academic library as a
Connector, Catalyst, Common Good and Service-Rich Environment, and offer a
template for applying this model to a range of disciplines.

Johnson, J. K. (2009). Reworking Myth: Casting Lots for the Future of Library Workplaces,
Montana State University.
The purpose of this work is to provide understanding regarding the
future of library workplaces by, first, establishing the relationship between Joseph
Campbell's functions of mythology in traditional cultures and workplace texts,
and then showing libraries as workplaces with such texts. With this framework in
place, it is possible to pick-out the fundamental cycle inherent in library
workplace cosmology, highlight pedagogical cycles inherent in library texts, and
generate an informed understanding of future cosmological and pedagogical
trends using educated extrapolation of such cycles. These steps all serve to lay
further groundwork in understanding library workplace mythology and its
sociological effects, and, using the relationship between ever-moving
cosmological and pedagogical cycles, it becomes possible to form an educated
picture of future library sociology. In the end, library workplace mythology has no
new revelations about the direction of library workplace sociology, only new ways
of dispelling predictions often made about the future of libraries and their
workplaces. By looking at library workplaces as sites of mythology, this work
offers expectations that the same cycles inherent in past and present library

Creating Space: The Impacts of Spatial Arrangements in Public Library

Makerspaces Between the internet and an ever growing number of eresources,
many people are going outside libraries for their information needs. This makes it
harder to justify the continued existence of libraries. Useable space and local
communities are looking to be two of the biggest assets for libraries today.
Creating and managing community connections is a growing area, one which
could help to secure a continued place for libraries in our modern world.
Makerspaces (also referred to as hackerspaces) are community-oriented spaces
where people gather to create, make, and learn using a variety of tools. We are
seeing more of these spaces in some form or another slowly infiltrate libraries as
an additional service. The Edge, an initiative of the State Library of Queensland, is
a great example of this new form of library, managing not only the makerspace
itself but the community knowledge it creates. Simply dropping a 3D printer into
your public access system isn't enough - the community needs to engage with
the space and be allowed to influence it according to their needs. The community
behind the makerspace is where libraries should focus their attention, helping to
cultivate existing networks and create new ones. In Western Australia, the Town
of Victoria Park Public Library has entered into the maker community through the
use of information sessions, forums and community engagement. Using social
media, local networks and models from other libraries, the Town of Victoria Park
Library aims to engage the community and improve the Town's 'vibrant lifestyle'
message. This paper will show participants how to set up their own creative space
and build up those vital community links around it. Practical examples backed by
research will present a good starting model to
help other libraries implement their own maker projects

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of an

electronic noise-monitoring device (NoiseSign) at reducing noise levels in quiet
study areas in an academic library. Design/methodology/approach – Surveys and
decibel-level measurements were used to measure the perceived and objective
noise levels, respectively, in both an intervention and a control area of two major
branch libraries. Patrons’ perception of noise was measured with a passive paper
and online survey, which asked patrons to rate the current noise level and their
desired noise level. The actual noise measurements were collected twice a day
with a hand-held decibel reader for 60 seconds and then corroborated after the
intervention with automatically logged decibel readings from the noise monitor
device in the two intervention areas. The authors conducted one-way ANOVA’s to
determine if the results were significant. Findings – The NoiseSign had no
statistically significant effect on either actual noise levels or user perceptions of
noise in the library. The surveys comments and anecdotal observation of the
spaces while doing measurements did reveal that noise in the quiet study areas
was not the primary source of complaints. Originality/value – In spite of many
proposed solutions to reducing noise in libraries, there has been very little
research in this area. This is the first study to examine the effectiveness of using a
noise-monitoring device in reducing noise levels at an academic library.

S’appuyant sur quelques-unes de ses réalisations récentes – les Halles et les
Grands-Moulins à Paris, la banlieue de Douai, Marseille, Angers… – cet urbaniste
et architecte a décliné les différentes étapes de l’urbanisme architectural de la
ville, du « projet urbain » à la « ville franchisée » pour aboutir à une « ville
passante », dans une recherche de continuité. L’urbanisme du possible se traduit
notamment, pour lui, par la réduction du temps de déplacement en voiture et le
développement de déplacements doux, par la création d’autres types d’espaces
publics et par l’introduction de la géographie dans les villes.

This paper presents design thinking as an alternative approach to

conduct research on collaborative learning with technology. The underlying
premise of the paper is the need to adopt human-centered design principles in
research and design of computer-supported collaborative tools. Two research
results are described in order to discuss the possibilities and challenges of
applying design methods for designing and researching collaborative knowledge
building tools. The paper begins by defining collaborative learning with new
technologies as a wicked problem that can be approached by adopting a design
mindset. Design thinking and particularly research-based design relies on a
shared, social construction of understanding with the people who will later use
the tools. The key phases in research-based design (contextual inquiry,
participatory design, product design and software as hypothesis) are described
and exemplified through the presentation of two research results. The two
prototypes presented are the fourth version of the Future Learning Environment
(Fle4), a software tool for collaborative knowledge building and Square1, a set of
hardware and software for self-organized learning environments. Both cases
contribute to the discussion about the role of artifacts as research outcomes.
Through these cases, we claim that design thinking is a meaningful approach in
CSCL research.

Se analizan las propuestas sobre edificios e instalaciones de las

bibliotecas presentes en los programas con que los partidos políticos
participaron en las elecciones de Castilla-La Mancha durante el periodo de la
crisis económica, con el fin de evaluar cómo reflejan el interés social por las
mismas. A pesar de la desmaterialización digital de los servicios bibliotecarios en
el actual entorno híbrido, la proyección de la biblioteca pública como un servicio
a la sociedad requiere de una presencialidad física que dé soporte a su actual
papel como ágora, punto de intercambio socio-intelectual y de formación de la
comunidad a la que sirve. Esto debería verse traducido en un interés social por
los espacios bibliotecarios que puede ser testado a través de su presencia en los
programas electorales, donde se ven reflejados los temas que conforman la
agenda política. Concluimos que ha habido un cambio de tendencia, priorizando
la reforma y aseguramiento de la apertura de los centros frente a la construcción
de nuevas bibliotecas. Igualmente, se comprueba que los programas presentan
una visión muy tradicional de los servicios presenciales

The academic library is in a process of transformation before the

European Space for Higher Education. This new frame involves basically a change
in the model of education, centred on the learning and based on a series of
competence that turn the student into protagonist of your own learning. This
change in the educational paradigm integrates the Information and
Communication Technologies (ICTs), as well as the e-learning and the
information literacy, in the future educational models. To support this change the
academic libraries must adapt his spaces and services to the new educational
needs, evolving to a Learning Resources Center. In this paper there are analyzed
the processes of conversion of the academic library, and the new role of the
librarians, before the informative needs that the university community demands.

Les universitats d'arreu del món i també les catalanes es troben davant
de reptes, interns i externs, que configuraran un nou model d'universitat.
L'aprenentatge en xarxa (e-learning), la nova definició del concepte
d'aprenentatge presencial, la recerca distribuïda i tecnològica, la implicació en el
desenvolupament del territori o el nou Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior són
alguns dels nous elements essencials d'aquest canvi. Les biblioteques de les
universitats fins ara serveis passius de suport a la docència i la recerca, tenen en
aquests moments unes oportunitats extraordinàries per convertir-se en
palanques segures que ajudin a aconseguir aquesta nova universitat. Això serà
possible si les biblioteques opten per una sèrie de transformacions, una d'elles,
convertir-se en veritables espais integradors de serveis universitaris. La biblioteca
com a Centre de recursos per a l'Aprenentatge (CRA), és un model d'ajuda i
permet aquest canvi, atès que estpa dissenyat per satisfer les necessitats reals

Purpose – This paper aims to provide insights into issues encountered in

maintaining library technologies and electronic collections in changing times and
on a limited budget with limited personnel. Design/methodology/approach – The
paper uses real-world experiences and anecdotal evidence to provide
commentary on progress and the future of libraries as it relates to letting go of
traditional practices and procedures and embracing new ideas and directions.
Findings – Weeding a large collection of materials with limited personnel and
finances is no easy task. Aside from the functional aspects of handling and
processing thousands of volumes there are emotional aspects to discarding that
can be overwhelming for some. There is also the fear that one may be throwing
away something useful or valuable. Originality/value – This paper is a light
hearted piece on one librarian's experiences in taking part in a large-scale
weeding project.

The Duderstadt Center, originally known as the Media Unioni, was

opened in 1996. It is named for the former president of the university whose
ideas are reflected in our programs. Ten years before the building was begun Dr.
James Duderstadt clearly saw the convergence of technologies and resources
that was on the horizon. As an engineer he wanted to create opportunities for
students that involved active learning. He also trusted that if we provided the
resources, our students would make good use of them.

El edificio de una biblioteca constituye la primera imagen que el público

se forma con relación a los servicios que puede esperar de ella y llega a
representar un símbolo del nivel cultural, económico y social de una institución,
ciudad o país, por lo que estudiar los elementos que influyen en su edificación, y
por ende en la prestación de servicios de información, se constituye en una labor
que no puede ser postergada en las sociedades actuales marcadas, entre otros
factores, por el impacto del desarrollo tecnológico, el cambio climático, la
globalización cultural, la seguridad social, así como el cambio de valores y
costumbres que guían el comportamiento del ser humano.En México es poca la
literatura que refiere al número y características con que cuentan estos edificios,
por lo que el presente documento describe la normativa mexicana que trata
sobre la construcción de bibliotecas a partir de la identificación de la legislación,
políticas, actores e instituciones que han abordado el tema, de tal forma que al
final se presenta la problemática detectada como un primer acercamiento para la

empleada fue el desarrollo de un cuestionario dirigido a los egresados. Aunque el

El Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior (EEES) se acordó en 1999 por

los veintinueve Estados que suscribieron la Declaración de Bolonia. Hoy agrupa a
47 países. Desde luego este ‘Plan Bolonia’ es mejorable, pero aun así, creo que
supone una gran ocasión de cambio para las universidades, y debe ser percibido
como una apuesta por la calidad en la formación del alumnado y por la mejora
del servicio público universitario. Si Europa alcanzó una unión monetaria, es
razonable que aspire a lograr una Europa del conocimiento (Estrategia de Lisboa,
2002), por la que las estructuras de los estudios superiores en los países
europeos sean comparables y compatibles, con idea de poder dar respuesta a las
necesidades del mercado laboral. Esto no supone, en absoluto, una dependencia
de las empresas, sino que obedece a la propuesta poco sospechosa de Ortega
para quien la Universidad, lo “primero” que tiene que ser, es centro de formación
para las profesiones intelectuales. Nos motiva a ello, además, la necesidad de
realizar los intercambios que la globalización de actividades y la pertenencia a la
UE nos obligan. En este contexto, la movilidad de los universitarios de la
generación Erasmus, es otra forma de mejorar la calidad y fortalecer la dimensión
europea de la enseñanza superior

Purposeful assessment of space for the understanding and improvement

of the academic library is a relatively new area of inquiry. This essay offers a
framework to consider different factors affecting such an assessment and insights
for undertaking a meaningful inquiry about the relationship of space to an
academic library’s evolving purpose as accumulator, service provider, and
collaborative partner in learning and knowledge creation. The purpose of the
assessment will vary according to the perspective of the library under
examination. Paths for approaching such assessment include consideration of the
assessment’s purpose, types of questions posed by it, data-gathering
methodologies, and reporting strategies of results. These paths are useful to gain
insights into the evolving role of the library and its contribution to the academic
enterprise. Not surprisingly, the inquiry turns as well to changes in the identity of
librarians as separate from the building where they work.

The adaptation of the Pontificia Comillas University of Madrid Library and

its professional staff to the new concept of library, required by the new European
guidelines can be mainly seen in the users' training area. In the context of the
new EEES and the new degrees, during the last two academic years we have
applied a new experience that goes beyond the basic training of users. This is
about the active contribution and collaboration in the documentation subject in
the Translation and Interpretation degree. This contribution has two clearly
different axes, as it includes a programme with theoretical units and, the students
have to present a bilingual lexicographic essay at the end. For the theoretical
area, the librarians, as the specialists in this subject, we presented some subjects:
information units, how to search and value the information, classifications and
thesaurus. In the practical area, we guided them through the different sources of
specialised information so that they could carry away the research for their
essays. They were taught about the different supports and different sources,
quality, open access, learning to find the information efficiently and
appropriately, to choose it, to value it and to know how to use it in a legal and
ethic manner. With this relation, not only we are contributing to the new concept
of teaching focussed in the learning aspects, but we are also aiming to build the
library as an active part of the University, directly linked with the degrees and the
formation of teachers.

dimensiones actuales: la espacialidad material, la inmaterial, la abiológica, la de
ampliación de los dominios, y la poli o multifuncional. El Editorial concluye con
un llamado a la reflexión sobre el porvenir de las bibliotecas ante la irrupción de

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present the experience of

National Taiwan University Medical Library (NTUML) in changing the atmosphere
of the library, catering to the needs of current users; attracting potential users to
the library; and modifying the library's image from a place filled with stacks of
books and clusters of computers to a place where people might relax and enjoy
reading. Design/methodology/approach – NTUML commenced the planning
stage of the renovation of its Reference Room on the third floor in June 2007.
After extensive discussions with the interior designer, the NTUML transformed an
abstract idea into the concrete design of the “New Reading Paradise”, a diverse
and cozy environment suitable for quiet reading, group discussion and
interaction. The “New Reading Paradise” was officially open to public in March
2008. The 992-square-meter reading paradise houses a choice collection of
books and reference materials, with comfortable, brightly-lit discussion rooms
and ergonomically designed reading tables and chairs. Findings – Records show
that from 2005 to 2008 the number of readers using the NTUML Reference Room
increased by 52.60 percent. The NTUML conducted a small questionnaire survey
of a random sample of its users. Of the 40 respondents, 35 were satisfied with the
overall design of the space, and the remaining five thought it was acceptable. A
total 37 respondents said that they were more inclined to use the library because
of the “New Reading Paradise”. Originality/value – The paper describes how the
library transformed itself to become more in tune with the needs of its users. The
Reading Paradise reminds the users to slow down, take a mind break, and enjoy
reading and thinking. This is a responsibility of the library.

Purpose – With the development of new public libraries such as the Idea
Stores in Tower Hamlets and Discovery Centres in Hampshire, it has been
debated whether the inclusion of non-book materials and activities illustrates the
death of public libraries by the marginalisation of books. This paper aims to
investigate these assumptions by examining the use of space in public library
buildings for book and non-book purposes over time.
Design/methodology/approach – The methodology involves a survey of
secondary data on library buildings and the comparison of floor plans,
observations and stock statistics of libraries in the two authorities over time.
Findings – This study concludes that the inclusion of non-book space is not a new
trend in library buildings and that books still have a significant role in terms of
floor space and stock in new libraries even with the increased addition of
non-book space, illustrating less dramatic changes than suggested by some
commentators. These trends in fact indicate a diversification of public libraries
and their buildings not their imminent death. Research limitations/implications –
Although this research was only able to study a few examples of libraries, this
alternative method of investigating space could be repeated in future research.
Originality/value – The study of use of space in libraries is important as it has
implications for the library profession and the design of future library buildings.
This methodology provides a different way of studying the issues of space.

The Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress is one of the

more significant public structures in American architecture, due for the most part
to its wealth and quality of decoration, including an extensive sculptural program
executed in 1894–97. The architects entrusted the program to a committee of
three prominent sculptors, J. Q. A. Ward, O. L. Warner, and Augustus
Saint-Gaudens. Nearly one hundred individual works were commissioned from
thirty sculptors. In spirit they affirm the Enlightenment belief in public access to
knowledge being essential to a democratic society and in style the tenets of the
American Renaissance, an essentially conservative style that looked to antiquity

Once again, it is my special pleasure to introduce this documentation on

behalf of the LIBER Architecture Group, a Forum within LIBER, the Association of
European Research Libraries. It collects information about library building
projects across Europe. As in earlier surveys, a range of projects are presented
including new buildings, renovations, refurbishments and extensions. Our aim is
to provide librarians and architects with a wide variety of case studies and the
concepts upon which they are based. We believe that people involved in building
projects will be able to find here similar projects to their own, to gain new ideas,
to establish professional contacts and to learn from each other. For the twelfth
time the LIBER Architecture Group is publishing a collection of case studies, and
its publication coincides again with a seminar organized by the Group. This, the
18th seminar, is hosted by the University Library of Freiburg University, Germany.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Antje Kellersohn, Director, Dr.
Sabine Gehrlein, Deputy Director of the University Library, and their colleagues
for inviting us to come to Freiburg and thus for providing us not only with the
opportunity to see a stunning new library building and learn about the
underlying concept, but also to visit a fascinating city in Southern Germany! The
database ‘Library Buildings in Europe’ that the Czech National Library of
Technology set up four years ago enables electronic access to information on all
the projects that have been submitted since 2012. The projects are accessible
either as single database entries or are organized in collections relating to the
seminars in 2012, 2014 and now 2016. We decided, after much discussion, to
cease publication of the printed version and to concentrate instead upon the
electronic database which is more widely available to all. It is our intention to
incorporate earlier material from the previous printed publications into the

This paper takes the form of a case study, exploring the impact of the
changes in higher education (HE) in England, on Library Services at the University
of the West of England, Bristol (UWE). The paper first outlines some of the key
characteristics of the English HE sector. It then looks at UWE and its library service
as it is now, before moving on to how the library service needs to adapt to help
the University meet its strategic objectives within the context of the wider HE
environment. This includes looking at organisations and structures; the
implications for library and other staff: the skills they will need to have or
develop; the motivation and disposition they will be required to demonstrate;
and, so on. It concludes by looking at some possible ways forward for libraries in
the longer term.

Desde hace muchos años se debate la formación universitaria en

biblioteconomía y documentación. En un primer periodo se hablaba sobre si era
necesaria, en un segundo momento positivo asistimos a una rápida
implementación en toda la geografía española y en un tercer periodo actual en
torno al Proceso de Bolonia. Pero el debate actual sobre los estudios en nuestro
campo en realidad no debe ser tanto sobre este proceso de armonización
europea sino sobre nuestra propia subsistencia. Los datos de bajada de
matriculación de alumnos en nuestros estudios desde hace cinco años son
realmente alarmantes. Además, por otra parte, los estudios de inserción laboral
muestran como el empleo al que acceden nuestros titulados es bastante negativo
y, en realidad, son contratados más como técnicos medios que como
profesionales. De todas formas este suceso no es nuevo, Estados Unidos ya vivió
el cierre de sus escuelas de biblioteconomía. Y este cierre, para diversos autores1,
se debió a su aislamiento con respecto a la profesión y al propio ámbito
universitario. La clave para aumentar nuestro campo de acción es no contemplar
nuestra formación en las competencias necesarias en bibliotecas, archivos y
centros de documentación, sino en un objetivo más amplio que es la gestión de
la información. Así, al servir a un mercado más grande y diverso, los programas
de formación podrán crecer y diversificarse y aumentarán sus posibilidades de
supervivencia.

After discussing the qualities of the network of independent bookshops

in terms of diversity, aesthetics, and economy, the author then explores the
relationship between a bookshop's stock, display, identity, and image. He looks
back t the successive layouts of his own bookshop, Ombres blanches in Toulouse,
since it first opened in 1975, and his choices in terms of expansion, remodelling
window displays, furnishings, decor, and so on, to create a distinct identity for the

Se presenta un proyecto de innovación docente para la adaptación de

todo el primer curso de la Diplomatura en Biblioteconomía y Documentación de
la Universidad de Zaragoza al EEES realizado en el curso 2006/07. Se ha
procedido al ajuste a créditos ECTS y a la programación docente orientada a
competencias. Destacan las actividades transversales, cuyos objetivos son
aumentar la conciencia y la motivación de los alumnos respecto a sus futuros
roles profesionales, y aumentar la eficiencia en la interacción docente evitando
duplicaciones mediante una secuenciación en bloques más reducidos de los
contenidos docentes. Se han desarrollado instrumentos para contabilizar la
dedicación horaria de profesores y estudiantes y para evaluar su satisfacción, alta
en ambos casos. Diversos estudios paralelos sobre el nivel de satisfacción de los
egresados, su inserción laboral, y sobre los perfiles solicitados por las empresas y
la administración facilitarán la planificación del futuro título de grado. Palabras

 Purpose – The purpose of this study is to report on the challenges and
lessons learnt by the Texas A&M University Libraries' processing team when
trying to implement a “resource in common” high-density storage unit model
between Texas A&M University Library and The University of Texas-Austin
Libraries. Design/methodology/approach – The case study draws on the
experience of the Texas A&M University Libraries' processing team when the
university funded the creation of a jointly owned remote storage unit, which
foundation would rest on a “resource in common” model. The creation of a new
library building allowed Texas A&M University Libraries to free up stack
space in order to create new learning spaces to meet the needs of the library
users. However, as the processing began, initial theories of what a “resource in
common” was, how to implement a “resource in common” and resources needed
to implement the “resource in common” model began to be questioned. This
study examines the lessons learnt when trying to implement a “resource in
common” model. Findings – Based on the experiences of the Texas A&M
University Libraries' processing team, increased communication and early
participation in the decision-making stages is key when trying to implement a
“resource in common” model. This processing team was responsible for updating
the MARC records for all the items that were identified to go to the joint storage
unit. They recognized that any collaborative venture of this magnitude required
an excellent workflow and workload understanding by all parties, including those
members of the TAMU Library initial project planning team who were active
members on the initial library storage facility oversight committees. This
understanding would allow everyone at TAMU involved in the massive project to
have a clearer knowledge of the strains caused by the increased workload and
could communicate to the full team the obstacles the library would be facing.
Originality/value – This paper introduces the idea of “resource in common” and
will be of interest to all libraries facing both space and funding shortages who
might be considering building a storage unit. These libraries might consider
implementing a “resource in common” model as a way to solve these problems.

 Libraries have always played an important role in their communities.
Particularly as a source of information for leisure time users, or people searching
for specific information. However, the world of information has seen profound
and far-reaching changes, due to new modern technologies, such as satellite
disks, cyber space/internet, new policies, new needs and objectives, new reading
patterns, to mention a few. The physical library of today, meaning its architecture,
design and styling, as well as the service-rendering library, has to adapt or risk
marginalisation. This does not mean that its foundations and core principles have
become less relevant – rather, a process of “emancipation” is taking place, with
more freedom in architecture, design, lay-out, functions, and responsibilities – the
aim is to add more value to its importance to modern society.

New libraries are constantly challenged to adapt how their spaces are
used. This is the case even more so for libraries with primarily digital collections.
As a brand new 21st-century library with only a few print materials and a 98%
digital collection, it was important for the University of Central Florida Harriet
Ginsburg Health Sciences Library to promote use of our space to existing users,
and to establish the library space itself as a valuable resource to its faculty, staff,
and students. This would be accomplished through the development of novel
outreach activities, including one of our more unique and successful
experiences—Popcorn Day.
