Prólogo
El presente libro es el resultado del trabajo realizado por profesores uruguayos en pos de la
concreción de un sueño: crear materiales adecuados y contextualizados a la realidad de la educación
de adultos en el Uruguay. Este sueño comenzó en 2014 cuando el profesor Aldo Rodriguez, haciendo
uso de un año sabático, creó los libros Experiencing English 1, Experiencing English 2 y Experiencing
English 3.

Personality Tests
One personality test is the SAPA personality test. If you would like to know
more about it you can go to https://sapa-project.org/survey/start.php. Here are the
results of a test taken by Daniel. Look at the results of it. Discuss with the person next
to you what calls your attention about it.

In the results, there are some personality traits or characteristics that are
negative. Some examples could be irritability, anxiety or impulsiveness. Which
characteristics do you see in yourself as negatives.
29
Describing my personality
Here you have more expressions to describe yourself or any person. Select the
ones which describe you and complete the table called Me. Then, think of a friend and
complete the table called My friend.
Me My friend
• I am independent. • He/She is artistic.
• _______________ • _______________
• _______________ • _______________
• _______________ • _______________
How similar are you and your friend. Explain using the ideas above.

Opinion phrases
Similarities:
We are pretty similar. We are so alike. We have the
same personality. We are equally funny. The way
we behave is so similar. My friend is as optimistic
as me.
Differences:
I am not as artistic as my friend. We are totally
different. We are nothing alike. I am talkative but
she is very quiet.
Language focus
Our memory system becomes more efficient when we find patterns. This helps us
to be more creative when combining words:
a- How can we organise all the expressions in this unit? Work with a
partner and find groups to classify them. After that, share your answers
with the group.
b- Read the expressions in activity 4 again and select two words that you
find difficult to remember. You can try with Mnemonics to remember
difficult words. For example, to remember the word “view” I can create
the following mnemonic: “Vi imágenesen WhatsApp”. Try one with a
partner.
c- Applications also help us to remember words. Look at this example and
try it. If you know another app, share it with your classmates.
31
Visual Vocabulary Application for Android: this app includes pictures for vocabulary
practice, you can see a picture and flip it to read the word and listen to its
pronunciation. If you associate that to an image, it is easier to remember a word or
expression.

Your values define you and they influence your everyday decisions. What do
you value or treasure the most? Each person has different values and they usually
change over time. Check the meaning of each of these nouns.

The Effects of Gratitude
In another study by Seligman, Steen, and Peterson (2005), participants were given
one week to write and then deliver a letter of thanks in person to someone who had been
especially kind to them, but who had never been properly thanked. The gratitude visit
involves three basic steps:
1. First, think of someone who has done something important and wonderful for you, yet
who you feel you have not properly thanked.
2. Next, reflect on the benefits you received from this person, and write a letter
expressing your gratitude for all they have done for you.
3. Finally, arrange to deliver the letter personally, and spend some time with this person
talking about what you wrote.

Now it’s your turn to write a gratitude card. Think of the following:
i. A person who has done something good for you. Write that action.
ii. The benefits you received from this action.
iii. Now, with all the vocabulary write the card.

I can hold my breath
I can bite my tongue I can do it
I can stay awake for days I can do it
If that’s what you want I'll get through it
Be your number one But I’m only human
I can fake a smile And I bleed when I fall down
I can force a laugh I’m only human
I can dance and play the part And I crash and I break down
If that’s what you ask Your words in my head, knives in my heart
Give you all I am You build me up and then I fall apart
I can do it X 3 'Cause I’m only human, yeah
But I’m only human I’m only human X 2
And I bleed when I fall down Just a little human
I’m only human I can take so much
And I crash and I break down til I’ve had enough
Your words in my head, knives in my heart Cause I’m only human
You build me up and then I fall apart And I bleed when I fall down
Cause I’m only human, yeah I’m only human
I can turn it on And I crash and I break down
Be a good machine Your words in my head, knives in my heart
I can hold the weight of worlds You build me up and then I fall apart
If that’s what you need ‘Cause I’m only human, yeah

According to the rules, the participants can carry their wives or the neighbours. The wife
should be at least 17 years old and weight a minimum 49 kilos. If the wife is lighter, she should
carry an additional rucksack. There are different types of carrying: piggyback, over the
