Experiencing English 6
The adult learner and some social problems

English 3.

adultos y alumnos no tradicionales.
libros Experiencing English 4, Experiencing English 5 y Experiencing English 6.

Personalities

a- Look at the following words describing people’s personality.

Chatty Thoughtful

Generous Loving

Gritty Kind

Courageous Cheerful

Sensible Neat

Sensitive Friendly

Which of these words look similar to Spanish?

Among these words there are two words that are “false friends”, which means
that they look similar to Spanish but they mean something different. Can you
spot them?

Sharing ideas!

 Which of those are parts of your personality?

 Which of those are important to find in a friend?
 Which of those bother you a little bit?

25
My personality
Look at this word cloud of adjectives describing personality. Which of these words
describe you the best?

Created with https://wordart.com/

As you may remember my name is

Daniel and I work in an office. My co-
workers say that I am a funny, cooperative
and friendly person. My friends believe that
I am a reliable and honest guy who always
has a positive attitude toward life and
problems. I would say I am gritty!

26
WATCH THIS VIDEO ABOUT PERSONALITY TYPES:

After watching the video, say if the following ideas are right (√)or wrong (×)
not stated (NS):

a- The information presented here is a result of a study from 2018.

b- The three researchers studied people’s answers using technology.
c- The personality types are called: role model, self-centered, reserved, and
openness.
d- The self-centered personality includes people who are unpleasant, lazy and
sociable.
e- Any person can take the personality test.

1- Which of these four personality types mentioned in the video suits you the best?

Say why.I think my personality type is ________ because ___________.

a- What is your opinion about personality tests? Use the expressions in SOS box
to help you:
i. Write your opinion.
ii. Work with a partner and share opinions.

Opinion phrases:
In my opinion, ...
To my mind, …
It seems to me that, …
I have no doubt that, …

27
Personality Tests
One personality test is the SAPA personality test. If you would like to know
more about it you can go to https://sapa-project.org/survey/start.php. Here are the
results of a test taken by Daniel. Look at the results of it. Discuss with the person next
to you what calls your attention about it.

Screenshot: Result of the SAPA Project personality test.

28
In the results, there are some personality traits or characteristics that are
negative. Some examples could be irritability, anxiety or impulsiveness. Which
characteristics do you see in yourself as negatives.

Look at Daniel’s example:

Talking about my personality my friends

believe that I am a good guy. However, they
think I have three negative characteristics.
First, I am a little workaholic, which means
that I love working a lot. I am also a little
selfish, I think of myself first. And finally
people think I am conservative.

Your opinion matters

Daniel mentions three characteristics but then he analyzes two of them. He

didn’t analyze why he is conservative. How do you think a person could be
conservative? Give examples of that.

29
Describing my personality
Here you have more expressions to describe yourself or any person. Select the
ones which describe you and complete the table called Me. Then, think of a friend and
complete the table called My friend.

I am a hard-working person I have a positive attitude I can keep a situation enjoyable

How similar are you and your friend. Explain using the ideas above.

30
Opinion phrases

Similarities:
We are pretty similar. We are so alike. We have the
same personality. We are equally funny. The way
we behave is so similar. My friend is as optimistic
as me.

Differences:
I am not as artistic as my friend. We are totally
different. We are nothing alike. I am talkative but
she is very quiet.

Language focus

Our memory system becomes more efficient when we find patterns. This helps us
to be more creative when combining words:

a- How can we organise all the expressions in this unit? Work with a
partner and find groups to classify them. After that, share your answers
with the group.
b- Read the expressions in activity 4 again and select two words that you
find difficult to remember. You can try with Mnemonics to remember
difficult words. For example, to remember the word “view” I can create
the following mnemonic: “Vi imágenesen WhatsApp”. Try one with a
partner.
c- Applications also help us to remember words. Look at this example and
try it. If you know another app, share it with your classmates.

31
Visual Vocabulary Application for Android: this app includes pictures for vocabulary
practice, you can see a picture and flip it to read the word and listen to its
pronunciation. If you associate that to an image, it is easier to remember a word or
expression.

1- I find learning vocabulary:

Easy, Quite difficult, Difficult, Very difficult

2- The strategy I prefer to learn vocabulary…

3- The strategy I will use to learn vocabulary is...

32
Decisions based on values

Your values define you and they influence your everyday decisions. What do
you value or treasure the most? Each person has different values and they usually
change over time. Check the meaning of each of these nouns.

family recreation social life community marriage

parenting employment education health science

arts spirituality animals nature travel

Images from Office.com

Daniel wants to tell you about the things that are important for him.

The three things I value the most... Well, I

come from a very deprived context. My family
was poor and they had to work all day. They
valued education a lot. For them, education
was the only thing they could give me. For
this, I value education a lot. I study whatever
is available. I also value social life because we
live in society and it is important to be aware
of that. Finally, I also value traveling. I think
that when you travel you open your mind.

33
Your opinion matters

What about you? What are the three things that you value the most?

The 3 things I value the most in my life are:

1. ___________________________________________________________________

2. ___________________________________________________________________

3. ___________________________________________________________________

Now share your answers with a partner.

Do you have similar opinions?

Opinion phrases

 The most important things for me are… and …

 I agree with you that. … is really essential for me.
 I don’t agree with you. I don’t think… is important
in my life.
 I agree up to a point. I think… is important for me
but I don’t think … is valuable for me.

34
Values in everyday life

As we mentioned before, values are present in each of our everyday actions.

a- Watch this video and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tA8wtLaui4

b- Watch the video again and tick (√) the values you find.

each of the values. For example: Honesty- When the man sees the money on
the counter, he gives it back to the customer.

VALUE ACTION

d- Think of actions for the other values in the list which are not present in the
video. Discuss them with a partner.

The effects of gratitude

STUDY 1: McCraty and colleagues STUDY 2: Seligman, Steen, and

(1998) Peterson (2005)

Description of the study: Description of the study:

RESULTS RESULTS

37
The Effects of Gratitude

In a study by McCraty and colleagues (1998), 45 adults were taught to “cultivate

appreciation and other positive emotions”. The results of this study showed that there was
a mean 23% reduction in the stress hormone cortisol after the intervention period.
Moreover, during the use of the techniques, 80% of the participants exhibited an increased
coherence in heart rate variability patterns, indicating reduced stress. In other words, these
findings suggest that people with an “attitude of gratitude” experience lower levels of
stress.

In another study by Seligman, Steen, and Peterson (2005), participants were given
one week to write and then deliver a letter of thanks in person to someone who had been
especially kind to them, but who had never been properly thanked. The gratitude visit
involves three basic steps:
1. First, think of someone who has done something important and wonderful for you, yet
who you feel you have not properly thanked.
2. Next, reflect on the benefits you received from this person, and write a letter
expressing your gratitude for all they have done for you.
3. Finally, arrange to deliver the letter personally, and spend some time with this person
talking about what you wrote.

The results showed that participants who engaged in the letter-writing

exercise reported more happiness for one month after the intervention compared to a
control group. Expressing gratitude not only helps you to appreciate what you’ve received
in life, it also helps you to feel that you’ve given something back to those who helped you.
Hand-delivering a letter of thanks absolves you of any residual guilt you might feel for not
having thanked this person previously, and fosters a sincere, heartfelt interaction that can
really strengthen your relationship.

Human by Martin Johnson and Christina Perri
I can hold my breath
I can bite my tongue I can do it
I can stay awake for days I can do it
If that’s what you want I'll get through it
Be your number one But I’m only human
I can fake a smile And I bleed when I fall down
I can force a laugh I’m only human
I can dance and play the part And I crash and I break down
If that’s what you ask Your words in my head, knives in my heart
Give you all I am You build me up and then I fall apart
I can do it X 3 'Cause I’m only human, yeah
But I’m only human I’m only human X 2
And I bleed when I fall down Just a little human
I’m only human I can take so much
And I crash and I break down til I’ve had enough
Your words in my head, knives in my heart Cause I’m only human
You build me up and then I fall apart And I bleed when I fall down
Cause I’m only human, yeah I’m only human
I can turn it on And I crash and I break down
Be a good machine Your words in my head, knives in my heart
I can hold the weight of worlds You build me up and then I fall apart
If that’s what you need ‘Cause I’m only human, yeah
Be your everything

Uruguay and data protection
Uruguay has an agency in charge of the digital development and it is called AGESIC. This is the
website: https://www.agesic.gub.uy/ Read the following text and find six (6) differences between the text
and the infographic. Follow this link to see the infographic or read the infographic on next page. Underline
the evidence in the text.

Protection of personal data in Uruguay

The Law on Protection of Personal Data No. 18.331 recognizes the right that we all have to control
the use that others make of our personal data. From now on, you can ask who has your data, where
the person has them, what data the person has and why the person used them.

We all have the right to present ourselves before the head of a public or private database to know
the purpose and use of our data. If the authority does not respond within five days, we have the right
to appeal to the Justice or to the Regulatory and Personal Data Control Unit (URCDP).

They are personal data, among others, the name, the surname, the email, the cell phone, a
photograph, the fingerprint, the retinal model, the voice, the image of a person, the RUT and the
DNA.

Sensitive personal data are those which reveal our racial or ethnic origin, political preferences,
religious or moral convictions, union affiliation and any information regarding our health or sexual
life. These data have special protection by the law.

No one is obligated to provide sensitive data. For collection and treatment, it is necessary to have the
express written consent of the owner, except in exceptional cases provided by law.

Our personal data should not be obtained, collected or used illegally, with deception, abuse of
superior position or through extortion. Nor can they be obtained without our prior consent when
appropriate.

We all have the right not to appear in telephone directories without our consent and not receive
unwanted advertising.

Those who work with our personal data have a duty to maintain professional secrecy and
confidentiality. They also have the duty to adopt the appropriate security measures so that the data
is safe and is not lost, stolen or used without authorization.

When you have a set of personal data organized and registered in any medium that allows them to
be treated, used and consulted, a database has been created that must be registered in the URCDP
registry.

In order to guarantee an effective protection of our personal data, the URCDP was created, which is
the institution before which we can report and ask questions. On the website
www.datospersonales.org.uy you will find all the information about your rights and the mechanisms
you have to defend them.

school? Work with a partner and share ideas.

How can we celebrate the end of high school?

I think we can… because…
I don’ think we should… because…
I think the best option is to... because …

Options: organize a party, organize a party at high school, organize a party

in a club, get autographed t-shirts, buy a present for the invisible friend game,
invite teachers and families to the party, have a pool party, take a photo of
the group, take a photo of the group and the teachers, decorate the
classroom, have dinner in a restaurant, have ice-cream in the best shop in
town, go camping together,…

Reasons: it is cheap, it is expensive, we need to collect a lot of money, it is

fun, it is boring, it is easy to organize, it is hard organize, we need
permission from the head, we can keep it to remember our classmates, …

After you discuss ideas with a partner, prepare a report for your class including
your ideas from the previous activities.

 Both of us think we can organize a party because it is cheap.

 I think we can’t organize a party but (your classmate’s name) thinks we

Read about three particular sports from different parts of the world

A- Wife Carrying World Championships 2019

Every year a small town of Sonkajaervi in Finland hosts the International Wife Carrying
Championships. During this competition, husbands have to carry their wives along the track
with various obstacles. The track is 250 m long and features several obstacles on land and a
1-m deep water pool.

According to the rules, the participants can carry their wives or the neighbours. The wife
should be at least 17 years old and weight a minimum 49 kilos. If the wife is lighter, she should
carry an additional rucksack. There are different types of carrying: piggyback, over the
shoulder, o r Estonian -style when a wife hangs upside-down with the legs around her
husband's shoulders and holds his waist.

B- Sepaktakraw

Sepaktakraw or kick volleyball is a popular sport in Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and

Malaysia. It is a competitive sport that involves 2 teams of 3 players, known as the left inside,
right inside and back. The game takes place at a court that’s about the same size as a
badminton court, with a 1.5-metre-tall net. The grapefruit-sized balls are traditionally hand-
woven from bamboo or rattan, but modern ones are usually synthetic.

Each team is allowed a maximum of 3 touches of the ball to pass it over the other side
without letting it touch the ground, of course. The ball can't be touched by the hands or
arms. The first team to score either 15 or 21 points, depending on the rules in play, wins the
set. The team that prevails in 2 sets wins the match.

C- Egg Throwing

It is a popular competition in England. Egg throwers can compete in different

categories. In the egg throwing event, teams of two throw and catch an egg over greater and
greater distances. In the egg static relay, a team of 11 throwers must pass a dozen eggs

Forgotten dreams

We make excuses, to touch the sky in flight.

we get busy, Suddenly, one day
we leave the territories we find ourselves judging
we had fought for. anyone who dreams today
Routine is all around us the same thing we dreamed of
and in its way we walk, yesterday.
while, those around us, And so they're staying
think we've grown up, our dreams, forgotten,
And so they're staying on the stumbling blocks of time
our dreams, forgotten, like wreckage.
tomorrow is no longer urgent But despite the oblivion
today has delayed us. where they are exiled,
Mills are mills, our dreams always wait
enough with the quixotic we dream them again.
it's not for realistic people
