Application
The snow sweeper is suitable as a winter service machine for
the removal of snow and slush of low height, for the removal of
water on runways, taxivays and aprons as well as for the
cleaning of boundary lights and similar.
It is particularly appropriate for the subsequent cleaning of
surfaces which have been cleared with a snow plough. Therefore
it is most suitable, to tow the snow sweeper by 2 vehicle which
is equipped with an adequate snow plough with a clearing width
Of approx. 4.5 m.
During the frost-free period it can be used to remove water, to
clean surfaces (e.g, after mowing of grassed areas) as well as
construction sites.Technical Description
General Description
The snow sweeper has been designed as a three-wheeled trailer.
It is also available as semi-trailer.
A truck chassis with a GVW of approx. 19 t and an engine of
approx. 150 kW (200 HP), equipped with a snow plough with a
clearing width of approx. 4.5 m is used as towing vehicle.
Snow and slush in the snow sweeper's working range are taken
and thrown to the left or right-hand side depending on the
brush position.
The sweeping effect is considerably supported by the blow air
stream blowing over the surface swept by the brush.
The blow air stream can also be used to blow snow off the
boundary lights, etc.
Three operating methods are possible with the snow sweeper:
1) Sweeping/blowing operation: with roller brush and blow
nozzle.
2) Sweeping operation only: only the roller brush is in
operation while the blower system is switched off.
3) Blowing operation: Only the blower system operates. The
roller brush is in transport position.
The working and engine functions (with the exception of engine
starting) are controlled and supervised via the manual control
panel in the driver's cab.
The correct and timely operation of the snow sweeper avoids the
formation of encrusted ice and stuck snow. Snow removal should
be carried out as early as possible. In any case the sweeping
speed must be adapted to the respective snow conditions. When operating without snow plough the maximum height of snow
(powdery snow) should not exceed approx. 10 cm.
For transit the roller brush can be swung in completely. The
blower device can also be swung in driving direction.
Consequently the overall width of the sweeper is reduced to
2.5 m and complies with the traffic regulations.
chassis
The chassis frame is a three-vheeled construction. This design
allows for good manoeuvrability. The steering lock angle on
both sides is 100°. The front wheel is suspended in a fork with
a pivoting bolster above it to which the drawbar with the
trailer coupling ring is fixed. The sweeper is also available
as semi-trailer or can be modified later for operation as
semi-trailer within a short time. The rigid rear axle is
mounted unsprung beneath the chassis frame and a pneumatic
brake system according to EC regulations is provided.
The parking brake acts on the rear wheels.
the front wheel ana the rear axle are equipped with single
tires 13 R 22,5. The tire pressure is 10 bars.
Covering
The engine compartment including exhaustor is covered with a
hood. The engine compartment hood can be lifted hydraulically
for maintenance. The engine compartment is easily accessible by
a step on its left-hand side.
The checks before operation, e+g- engine oil, cooling water and
hydraulic oil level, can be effected via the opened side
flaps.
The screwed covering sheets are removable for maintenance with
effortless ease.ve System
The drive system consists of the Diesel engine, cardan shafts,
compound belt drive, mitre gear and toothed-beit drive.
The engine is a Daimler-Benz Diesel engine, model oM 422.
The engine speea is automatically increased to operating epeed
or reduced to idling speed resp. via a hydraulic cylinder
together with the roller brush and/or blow nozzle control
For maintenance, however, the engine speed can also be adjusted
by a throttle hand lever.
The fan of the combined water-oil radiator is hyarostatically
driven and equipped with speed adjustment depending on the
cooling water temperature.
A single-disc dry clutch mounted to the engine flywheel allows
the whole drive systen to be disconnected from the engine
before starting and cut-off.
Phe exhaustor drive is connected via a compound belt directly
behind the clutch.
Phe roller brush is driven via cardan shafts and an
intermediate bearing with electro-magnetic clutch to the mitre
gear and further via a cardan shaft mounted in a protecting
pipe to the toothed-belt case.
Brush system
The brush system consists of the roller brush, the brush drive
(toothed-boit drive), the brush swivelling device, the lifting
device and the castor wheels.
The whole brush system pivots about 2 ball bearing slewing rin
beneath the chassis. The roller brush with universal joint
suspension allows for good compensation of uneven surfaces. The roller brush is equipped with the Schérling cassette brush
system. This system makes it possible to replace the brush
tufts within a very short time, without dismounting the brush
shaft. The sweeper is also available vith core rings and
throw-away rings.
The brush shaft is 4.240 mm long and in new condition it has a
diameter of 915 mn.
The roller brush is driven by the engine via cardan shafts, an
intermediate bearing with electro-magnetic clutch, a mitre gear
and a toothed-belt drive. a torsional vibration damper mounted
between the toothed-belt drive and the roller brush damps the
torsional vibrations from the roller bruch and the drive system
while being in operation and compensates for slight tilting of
the brush shaft.
The electro-magnetic clutch disconnects the roller brush drive
from the Diesel engine, if the brush is completely swung in
(transport position).
The brush swivelling device is composed of two alternately
acting hydraulic cylinéers which swivel the roller brush into
the desired sweeping position of 40° to the right or left or
into transport position (roller brush in driving direction)
resp.
The brush lifting device consists of two double-acting
hydraulic cylinders which lower or lift the brush. Two
vibration dampers avoid roller brush bouncing during sweeping.
Two slewable ana vertically adjustable twin castor wheels
assure an even surface contact of the brush.
Height adjustment, which is necessary due to brush wear and
tear, is carried out by a threaded spindle of rustfree steel
located on each of the castor wheel height adjustment devices.
A brush adjusting device, remote-controlled from driver's cab,
can be supplied as an option for the snow sweeper.
The castor wheel slewing bearings are equipped with an
adjustablo brake in order to avoia the wheels shimnying at high
working speeds.
The automatic castor wheel swivel device guarantees correct
castor wheel alignment after the roller brush has been
swivelled.Blower System
The blower system consists of the following main components:
heavy-duty exhaustor, slewable blow conduct (blower device) and
blow nozzle.
The drive is effected from the drive engine via a compound belt
and a cardan chaft.
A roller free-wheel is mounted between the cardan shaft and the
exhaustor shaft which allows the exhaustor fan to slow down
after the Diesel engine has been shut oft.
The blower device is swivelled into the right or the left
working position or center position resp. by a hydraulic motor
via a toothed-wheel drive. The blower device is locked in the
chosen position by a hydraulically released brake.
Lowering and lifting the blow nozzle and the hydraulically
connected switching on and off of blow air is done by hydraulic
cylinders.
Hydraulic Systen
The hydraulic system mainly consists of the hydraulic pump
driven by the Diesel engine, the electro-hydraulic pump, the
hyaraulic oil tank, the control unit as well as hydraulic
motors and cylinders.
The hydraulic pump driven by the Diesel engine feeds the whole
system with hydraulic oil. When the engine is shut off the
electro-hydraulic pump takes over the hydraulic work (the
supply system being switched on), as soon as a function is
initiated.
The hydraulic oil is conveyed from the hydraulic valves of the
control unit to the hydraulic motors and cylinders which then
carry out the various functions.Pheuma
ic system
The snow sweeper is equipped with a dual-circuit compressed-air
trailer brake according to EC standards. The brake acts on the
rear wheel brake drums.
The parking brake acts mechanically on the rear wheel brake
drums via a compensating beam and cables.
The snow sweeper does not have an own compresseé-air supply.
The compressed air which is required for the
pneumatic/hydraulic clutch actuation of the Diesel engine is
taken from the conpressed-air system of the brake system via an
overflow valve.
Electrical systen
The nominal voltage of the electrical system is 24 velt.
Two batteries, 12 Volt each, feed all consumers except the
position, tail and stop lights and direction indicators. During
operation these are supplied with current from the towing
vehicle via @ connecting cable with a 7-pole plug.
The sweeper is put into operation by switching on the supply
system with the starting switch in the switch box (behind the
left side flap).
During operation the individual hy@raulic functions are
controlled by the manual control panel. The manual control
panel is situated in the driver's cab ana is connected to the
sweeper by a 24-pole cable.
on the left and right hand-cide of the engine compartment a
control box each is located to enable the sweeping devices to
be swivelled into transport position and to carry out
maintenance jobs. By neans of these contrel boxes roller brush
and blow nozzle functions can be controlled individually.OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSImportant Remarks on Labour Safety
This SCHORLING Snow Sveeper, Model P 47 B, complies With the Labour
safety regulations of the German employer's liability insurance
association for vehicle holding.
The control actions described hereunder require careful observation of
the snow sweeper's surroundings, in spite of all safety elements,
especially during maintenance.
Ear defenders have to be worn
during maintenance on the
running machine,
The ignition switch acts on the battery cutoff relay (main switch) of
the electric system.
The engine compartment may only be entered when the hood is completely
opened.
When working in the engine compartment behind the exhaustor wall the
ignition key of the sweeper has to be taken out.
Before closing the hood make sure that there is nobody in the engine
compartment cr under the lowering hood resp.
During lowering of the hood the left and right-hand side of the engine
compartment have to be chserved (I11,1I-2.1)-
Before initiating swivelling of the sweeping or blower device make sure
that there is nobody vithin the slewing range.
Swivelling of the sweeping and blower device into transport position or
from transport te another position:
This is effected by the right or left-hand side control panels in the
engine compartment (I11- II-2.2) under constant cbservation of the
devices’ movements, Here an automatic course of functions is not
possible. When letting ga the lever, the device stops in its position.
The ignition key has to be pulled out when working in the slewing and
lowering range of the blower device.itlEXPLAWATION OF SYMBOLS

In order to avoid emptying of the fuel system, the fuel tank
must not be run empty.
Check engine oil level and refill, if necessary
There is an oil dip stick located behind the right engine
compartment side flap above the batteries (111. 11-12.3).
Another oil aip stick is situated on the left-hand eide of the
engine above the cardan shaft for the exhaustor drive (111.
II-i2+4). This can be used to check the level when engine oil
has been refilled.
Remark: Observe engine manufacturer's maintenance
instructions!
Air filter check
The maintenance indicator for the air filter is located on the
left-hand side of the clutch lever (Ill. [I-12.5). If an
inadmissibly high degree of soiling of the ary-air filter
element has been reached, a red cylinder becomes visible by
engaging in the inspection glass of the maintenance indicator.
Then the ary-air filter element nas to be replaced.
Remark: After replacing the filter the maintenance indicator
has to be reset by pressing the release button beneath
the indicator case (Ill. 11-12.5).Check of cooling agent level
Check inspection glass on cooling water compensating tank
behind the right-hand engine compartment side flap and refill
cooling agent, if necessary (111. II-14.1). If the cooling
agent level is too low, the level sensor in the radiator (which
is connected to the engine supervisory system) blocks starting
of the Diesel engine.
Check of hydraulic oil level
Check inspection glass on hydraulic o11 tank behind right-hand
engine compartment side flap (Ill. II-14.2). If the hydraulic
oil level is too lew, the level sensor in the hydraulic tank
(which is connected to the engine supervisory system) blocks
starting of the Diesel engine. Before initial operation ané
especially in case of loce of hydraulic oil in the tank a
visual check of the hydraulic system with regard to leakage has
to be effected. (Section maintenance “hydraulic system"
refers.)
Remark: The level marks on the inspection glass (max. ana min.)
ave valid for roller brush in lifted position and
closed engine compartment hood.
Gheck of oil level in mitre gear
Tho cil level must just be visible in the inspection glass when
the gearbox is out of operation. The inspection class is
located at the gear front end (I1l. I1-14.3).
If the minimum oil level remains under the mark, oil has to be
added.
Draining of compressed air tank
The compressed-air tanks (above the front wheel of the snow
sweeper) are equipped with manual draining valves. Pull the
loops of the cables to actuate the valves (Ill. Iz-14+4)+

Connection to towing venicle
Im order to enable the snow sweeper to be connected to
different trailer couplings, the trailer coupling ring of the
sweeper drawbar can be replaced. There is a storage space for
additional trailer coupling rings behind the right-hand engine
compartment side flap (Ill. rr-18+1)+
Remark: Adjust the arawbar to coupling height. Drive the towing
vehicle back and connect it to the sweeper. Detach
drawbar fixture (111. II-18.2-1).
Connection of trailer lighting equipment
ATTENTION! The trailer lighting equipment for the sweeper, i.e.
tail and stoplights, direction indicators as well as
the position lights on the roller brush have to be
supplied with 24 Volt by the towing vehicle.
Remark: The separate supply system of the snow sweeper is
independently operated with 24 Volt. The rotating
warning beacon on the snow sweeper is also operated by
the independent supply system.
Connection of compressed-air system
The snow sveeper is not equipped with an independent
compressed-air supply. Connect the compressed-air pipes with
the towing vehicle (ill. II-18.2-2) to fill the compressed-air
tank of the snov sweeper brake system. After having reached an
overpressure of approx. 6 bars the compressed-air tank for the
hy@ro-pneumatic clutch actuation of the snow sweeper engine
eluteh is filled.
Remark:
For shunting with detached supply pipes the trailer brake valve
is equipped with a release valve. To release the brake the
button of the release valve has to be pushed. The braking
effect on the rear axle ie stopped. The rear axle is braked by
pulling the button (111. 11-183).
@he brake cannot be released anymore by the release valve, if
the pressure in the supply pipe remains under the mininum of
approx. 3 - 4 bars. In this case the compressed-air reservoir
has to be regilled by connecting the brake pipes to a vehicle
with an independent compressed-air supply.il ‘lL.Connection of manual control panel
The manual control panel is fixed in the driver's cab near the
river's seat and connected with the 24-pole control cable of
the snow sweeper (111. [1-20.1-1)+
Remark: If a particular towing vehicle is used for the
operation of the snow sweeper, we recommend our
mounting kit "fix installation of control cable". Then
the provisional cable installation on the towing
vehicle and through the side window is avoided.
Parking brake on snow sweeper
qhe crank for releasing or pulling the parking brake resp. is
situated behind the right rear wheel. The crank has to be
swung out before actuation.
Release the parking brake by turning the crank anti-clockwise.
Remove the wheel chocks. :
ATTENTION! Put the chocke inte the pockets provided on the snow

However, the snow sweeper's power supply is maintained by the
batteries.
REMARK
If the ENGINE EMERGENCY sTOP buttons have been used to stop the
engine, these have to be unlocked after the roller brush has
stopped (button with turning unlocking).
If the ENGINE EMERGENCY STOP buttons remain locked, the Diesel
engine cannot be started.
Remarks on function controls on manual control panel and switch
box in the engine compartment after automatic engine stop and
emergency stop
If the Diesel engine ic stopped by the automatic engine
supervisory system (buzzer in manual control panel sounds), the
batteries remain connected with the snow sweeper (No acoustic
signal, if the EMERCENCY STOP is actuated).
If working functions are now initiated by the joystick (Ill.

In this case the hydraulic power is produced by the hydraulic
pump flanged to the Diesel engine. Then the electro-hydraulic
pump is automatically switched off. When the engine clutch is
engaged the roller brush does not rotate after swivelling into
sweeping position. The electro-magnetic clutch for the roller
brush remains disengaged.
The engine clutch has to be disengaged ana re-engaged (if the
brush is in right or left sweeping position) to switch the
electro-magnetic clutch on. The electro-magnetic clutch is
engaged when the brush does not move (advance). The friction
and acceleration work is only carried out by the engine
clutch.
Remarke on electro-magnetic clutch when putting the sweeper
into operation
The friction surfaces of the electro-magnetic clutch have to be
cleaned daily when putting the unit into operation. Proceed as

tufts. The shaft rests on the two mobile
supports for mounting the brush shaft.
Dhe big bruch shaft flange hac to be mounted
on the toothed-belt drive.
The hexagon screws (1) of the bracket - brush bearing
connection have to be detached and the bearing bush (2) has to
be pulled out by approx. 20 nm. Now the brush shaft can be
ingertea between the brush shaft flanges.
Remark: The brush shaft flanges have to be lifted or lowered
xesp. by the electro-hydraulic pump up to the level of
the mobile supports. Operation from the
engine-compartment control panel, ignition switched on.
Before, turn the programme selector switch into
position "Transport" (section 3.2.3 refers).
The bore holes of the Flanges (3 and 4) on the belt-case side
have to be aligned.
Remark: The ignition has to be cut off to rotate the drive
flange (4) of the toothed-belt drive. (Then the
electro-magnetic clutch of the cardan shafts is
disengaged).
The flanges have to be screwed by the hexagon screws (5). Push
the bearing bush (2) inside and tighten the hexagon screws (1)+
Align the bore holes of the flanges (6 and 7) and secure them
with hexagon screws (8).ill.

3613 Replacement of brush tufts
Preliminary note: The snow sweeper roller brush is equipped
with the Schérling cassette system. This
system allows to replace the brush tufts
within a short period of time, though the
brush shaft is not dismounted. The brush
tufts are only replaced from the right side
of the brush sheft (bracket side) seen in
driving direction.
Attention ~ denger of accident! The ignition has to be switched
off and the ignition key has to
be pulled out before brush tuft
replacement.
Set the front brush hood part in the upper position by the
threaded spindles. The row of cassettes to be replaced must be
in front and in horizontal position (The roller brush can be
rotated by hand, if the ignition is cut off. Observe the
measures for prevention of accidents, see above!).
Remove the two-piece retaining ring (111. 11-56.1-1/1I-56.2-1)
on the brush shaft bracket by unscrewing both screws (Ill.
II-56.2-2). Wow the cassettes can be pushed off the brush
shaft and replaced by new ones.
After all cassettes have been replaced put the retaining ring
with the neck inside onto the brush shaft and tighten the
screws. Now the roller brush is ready for operation.
Remark:
In order to balance the brush shaft while mounting the
cassettes, the shaft has to be turned by about 180° after one
rail has been provided with cassettes and then brush tuft
replacenent can be continued.I - 58

Brush adjustment
For brush adjustment by the castor wheel adjusting spindles
(Ill, [I-58.1) the snow sweeper should be driven onto an even
surface. The castor wheels have to be set in driving
direction.
Lover the brush and let it rotate for approx. 15 sec., lift the
brush, check the brush pattern, adjust it if necessary and
check again,
Remark: The brush pattern is the stripe marked on the surface
by the rotating brush. This should be parallel. The
width depends on the kind of bruch tufte and on the
application.
Width of brush pattern:
- steel bristles, dry snow approx. 40 - 60 mn
- steel bristles, wot snow approx. 60 - 80 mm
- plastic bristles, dry snow approx. 60 - 80 mn
- plastic bristles, wet snow approx: 80 - 100 mn
he front brush hood nas to be adjusted in accordance with the
brush wear by the turnbuckle sleeve (111. 11-58.2-1), after
unscrewing the star handle nuts (11, Ir-58.2-2).
ATTENTION!
If the brush pattern has the same width over the whole brush
length, both castor wheels have to be evenly adjusted, in order
to obtain an even brush wear.
Secure the castor wheel adjusting spindle and the brush hood
adjusting device after each adjustment by the securing device
or the star handle nut resp.il2
