Third Conditional
A diferencia a los tipos 1 y 2, se utiliza el tercer tipo de condicional cuando hablamos de una
condición en el pasado que no ha sucedido.
IF Condition Result
If past perfect “would have” + past participle
Ejemplos:
If I had known then what I know now, I would have done things differently. / I would have
done things differently if I had known then what I know now.(Si hubiera sabido en el
pasado lo que sé ahora, habría hecho las cosas de manera diferente.)
Suzanne wouldn’t have had the heart attack if she had gone on a diet as her doctor
recommended. / If Suzanne had gone on a diet as her doctor recommended she wouldn’t
have had the heart attack.(Suzanne no hubiera tenido el infarto si hubiera hecho dieta
como su médico le recomendó.)
Would you have liked to go to university if you had been able to afford it? / If you had
been able to afford it, would you have liked to go to university?(¿Te habría gustado ir a la
universidad si te lo hubieras permitido pagar?)
Nota: Como en los tipos 1 y 2, se pueden usar otros verbos modales en vez de “would” para
cambiar el significado y la probabilidad.
EJEMPLOS DE LOS TIPOS DE CONDICIONALES VISTO HASTA AHORA.
1. If he listens in class, he will understand the teacher. / He will understand the teacher if he
listens in class.
Las frases condicionales tipo 1 se utilizan para el futuro y en los casos en que es muy probable que la
condición pasará. Se forma utilizando "will" y el presente simple.
2. Would you help me if I needed it? / If I needed it would you help me?
Se utiliza el tipo 2 para expresar una posibilidad irreal en el presente. Usamos "would" y el pasado
simple para formar el tipo 2.

3. If you study you will pass your exams. / You will pass your exams if you study.

condición pasará. Se forma utilizando "will" y el presente simple.
4. Would you mind if I borrowed your bike?
Se utiliza el tipo 2 para expresar una posibilidad irreal en el presente. Usamos "would" y el pasado
simple para formar el tipo 2.
5. He won't eat dinner if he doesn't feel well. / If he doesn't feel well he won't eat dinner.
Las frases condicionales tipo 1 se utilizan para el futuro y en los casos en que es muy probable que la
condición pasará. Se forma utilizando "will" y el presente simple.
5. I would have visited the museums if I had had more time. / If I had had more time I
would have visited the museums.
Se utiliza el tercer tipo de condicional cuando hablamos de una condición en el pasado que no ha
sucedido. Se forma utilizando "would have" y el pluscuamperfecto.
6. Would you go on a cruise if you could afford it? / If you could afford it would you go
on a cruise?
Se utiliza el tipo 2 para expresar una posibilidad irreal en el presente. Usamos "would" y el pasado
simple para formar el tipo 2.
7. It would have been much worse if it had rained. / If it had rained it would have been
much worse.
Se utiliza el tercer tipo de condicional cuando hablamos de una condición en el pasado que no ha
sucedido. Se forma utilizando "would have" y el pluscuamperfecto.
