PART 4 CONNECTING IDEAS

We use these words called connectors, (and, or, but, because and so) to join two parts of
sentences. We use connectors to give more information, give alternatives, give reasons,
give results or express contrast of ideas.

Read the following text and underline the words that connect ideas

He is a Captain in the Argentinian Army and he is a student too. He is very young, but
he has a long military career. He is also an example of determination and he has got a
great spirit! He is now in the Belgrano II base, coordinating the logistics so he is far
from home, 6,000 kilometers away from his family and friends. It is not easy because he
loves his family but it is a very important mission and he can study or communicate
with them in his free time via internet.

Read the previous text again and complete with the corresponding connector

We use ……………………….. to give or add more information

PART 2 - READING
Read the following interview to a military man serving in Antarctica.

Captain Matías Alcorta Lucena is from Tucumán, Argentina. He is

married and has three daughters. He graduated from the Military
Academy with a degree in Business Administration in 2005. At the
moment, he is stationed at Belgrano 2 base. The base is located 77° 52’ 27”
south and 34° 37’ 36” west, 1400 kilometres away from the South Pole.
This base is unique for scientific work because it is built on a nunatak, a
rock formation.

Q: How many people are there on the base?

A: There are twenty-one people on the base. There are 16 people from the Army, 2 from the
Meteorology Division of the Air Force and 3 from the National Antarctic Direction. We all have
different jobs: mechanics, meteorologists, electricians, plumbers, computer technicians, drivers,
carpenters, cooks, scientists and helpers.

Q: Are there any families or children?

A: No, there aren’t any families on the base. Families only live on Esperanza base. There, they
have more technological resources and there are also primary and secondary school teachers that
help children with their schooling. For teenagers there is a special space on the army remote
teaching platform.

Q: What is your routine like? What time do you get up every day?

A: We have breakfast between 8 and 9 am. The people in charge of breakfast get up earlier than the
rest because they set the table and make water.

Q: Do you make water? Really?

A: Yes, we collect snow and ice, we put it on wooden sleighs and we take it to a pump. Then we
use that water for cooking and cleaning.

Q: How do you organize your everyday tasks?

A: While we are having breakfast, we distribute the tasks already planned for the week. We do
maintenance work at the car repair shop or fix the roofs. We take out the rubbish or do minor jobs
in different areas of the base. We also do mountain training and help the scientists working on the
base. We have lunch at 1:00 pm and then we take a nap. We usually finish work at 6:00 pm but
sometimes there is something important to do and we go on working.

Q: What do you usually do in your spare time?

A: After work, I like doing gym. I follow an exercise programme called “insanity workout”. Then I
have a shower. After that, I play table tennis or pool. We have dinner at 8:00 and after dinner some
people watch films or series, some others play PlayStation games, and some others go online. But
most of us try to relax and prepare for the next day.

Q: What about weekends? What do you do then?

A: We work on Saturdays too, so the weekend starts on Saturday evening. We sometimes play
table tennis, pool, board games or PlayStation games, and we usually organize tournaments. We
often read or do gym too. The highlight of the week is Saturday night, when we have pizza and
beer and we have a great time together. On Sunday we are off duty.

10
A) Complete the chart with ten different activities mentioned in the interview.
Are they similar or different from your own routine?
TIP: When you are comparing your activities with
other people’s, you need to use don’t or doesn’t to
talk about the things that are not part of your
routine or the routine of the other person.

Transcript

a) I love living in San Diego. The weather here is perfect, sunny nearly every day, but
sometimes there is a cold wind that comes off the Pacific Ocean. There's also a
famous zoo here in San Diego and I like to go in the summer to see all the animals.
My favorite thing about San Diego is the many types of restaurant that are here. I
love Chinese, Thai and Indian food and in San Diego, I can eat them all. I go to
college near the zoo. I am studying to become a vet, so one day, I want to work
inside the zoo. San Diego is not an old city, but there are parts more than one
hundred years old and there are interesting museums here.
b) Chester is an old Roman city and I live near the centre. Chester is in the north of
England and the weather is sometimes terrible -- a lot of rain and wind, even in the
summer. The Romans were in Chester two thousand years ago and today, there are
buildings and walls from that period; it's incredible to think of something so old. I
work for an advertising agency and our office is near one of the Roman gates to the
city. There are other big cities near Chester, like Liverpool, Manchester and
Birmingham, but I prefer to stay here. If I want to go to London, it's only two or
three hours on the train. Chester is not too big and not too small. It's perfect for me!
c) I'm a student in Paris. The university I go to is very near the River Seine which
passes through Paris. I love my city. Millions of tourists come to Paris every year
because it is famous for being so beautiful -- there are buildings, bridges, art
galleries and museums here, and some are five hundred years old or more. French
food is delicious and it's famous all over the world: fresh croissants in the morning
is the perfect breakfast and in the evening, maybe you would like some snails! The
weather in Paris is okay, the winter is sometimes cold and wet, but the summers are
always warm. Something I don't like about Paris is the metro. It's very expensive
and always too crowded.

The groundbreaking decision changes the rule that restricted women from combat roles in the past,
although women have often found themselves in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past 14
years. This decision will open about 220,000 military jobs to women.

This is the response to President Obama’s request three years ago to integrate women into all
combat jobs or ask for specific exemptions. The Navy and Air Force have already opened almost all
combat positions to women, and the Army has increasingly integrated its forces.

However, the announcement was a rebuke to the Marine Corps, which has a 93 percent male force
dominated by infantry and a culture that still segregates recruits by gender for basic training. In
September, the Marines requested an exemption for infantry and armor positions, citing a yearlong
study that showed integration could hurt its fighting ability.

Unit 4 : Our National Hero !

José de San Martín facts

José Francisco de San Martín (25 February 1778 – 17 August 1850) was
an Argentine general and the
prime leader of the successful
struggle for independence
from Spain of the southern
nations of South America.
Together with Simón
Bolívar in the north, San
Martín is regarded as one of
the Liberators of Spanish
South America. He is a
national hero of Argentina.

Life and career

San Martín was born in the town of Yapeyú in the province of Corrientes, Argentina,
then a Spanish colony (part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata). His father was a
Spanish official. He was educated at the military academy in Madrid, commissioned as
a Second Lieutenant in 1793, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1808. He
fought with the Spanish army
against Portugal, in the African colonies, and
against the invasion by Napoleon I's forces.
In 1812 he resigned from the Spanish army
and sailed home to Argentina, where he
offered his services to the revolutionary
forces.
San Martín occupied Lima, the capital
of Peru, on 9 July 1821. This was a huge loss
for the Spanish forces. On 28 July he was
voted the "Protector" of the newly
independent nation. During the same year, he
founded the National Library of Peru, to
which he donated his collection of books, and
praised the new library as "... one of the most
efficient means to spread our intellectual values".
San Martín's tomb in the Buenos Aires Cathedral

In 1824, after the death of his wife, Remedios de Escalada, he moved to France with his
daughter, where he spent the remainder of his days retired at Boulogne-sur-Mer
He was almost blind and had many health problems because of his advanced age, but
continued to write letters and keep in touch with the news from South America. He died,
on 17 August 1850.

PART 2
Technology on an Antarctic base

The role of technology on a military base makes life easier than it was in the past, but
there are some issues with it. The people on the base use the radio when they are doing
paperwork or they send reports because the radio has a broader Internet band. They use
Whatsapp for everyday things. Very often, videos and photos take very long to download.
Some people use Facebook, but only very early in the morning because there is a lot of
work to do. Also, working conditions are very hard, so many of the men leave their cell
phones in their rooms; if they are not careful, they may smash them while at work. The
base also has a toll-free number and they we use it to make and receive calls. They don’t
use video conferences with their families very much, only on special occasions like
birthdays, anniversaries or births. In their spare time they play Candy Crash, but they try
not to use these applications very much because they use up a lot of Internet and slow it
down.
Captain Alcorta Lucena is taking an online Master’s degree with a University on the
continent. During the day, the Internet signal is very low but he does not have time to study
then because he is very busy at work. The signal gets much better at night, so he usually

35
studies after dinner. He uses technology as an auxiliary tool; he reads books online, does
his assignments or takes part in forums.
He uses technology very much, but he says that it shouldn’t become an addiction. In
January, they were offline for a week and it was doomsday for some people. They can’t
count on Internet all the time, but other technological devices, like PlayStation consoles or
personal computers, are of great help.
3) Answer the questions with phrases from the text:

1) Why do the men send reports via radio?

2) How long do videos take to download?

READING COMPREHENSION:

My Town – Newquay by Alex Howarth

47
“I was born in Newquay. It’s a small town on the Atlantic coast in the south of England. It
has got great beaches and is the best place to surf in the UK. There are lots of surf schools
where you can learn how to surf. I go surfing with my friends every weekend. My
favourite place is Fistral Beach because there are lots of other things to do as well as
surfing and I live nearby. If you like water sports, you can go swimming, kayaking or
water-skiing .

I love Newquay because there is a lot of space, the houses are very big. Mine has a huge
living room on the ground floor, a dining room and next to it the kitchen. On the first floor
there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. My bedroom is between my brother’s and
my parents´. We also have a play room at the back. From my window, I can see the garden
full of trees and flowers”.

We use the verb to be:

51
1. with a noun: My mother is a teacher.
Bill Clinton was the president of the US.
2. with an adjective: This soup is delicious.
The children were good.
3. with the -ing form to make the We are walking down the street.

quantity and the age There are 30 cadets in this class but there
is only one teacher
5. with a prepositional phrase: John and his wife are from Manchester.
The flowers are on the table.

Unit 1 – Present Simple

The simple present tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular, true or
normal.

We use the present tense:

1. For routines.

 I take the train to the office.

 The train to Berlin leaves every hour.
 John sleeps eight hours every night during the week.

2. For facts.

 The President of The USA lives in The White House.

 A dog has four legs.
 We come from Switzerland.

3. For habits.

 I get up early every day.

 Carol brushes her teeth twice a day.
 They travel to their country house every weekend.

4. For things that are always / generally true.

 It rains a lot in winter.

 The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace.
 They speak English at work.

We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without the TO).

In general, in the third person we add 'S' in the third person.

Subject Verb The Rest of the sentence

52
I / you / we / they speak / learn English at home

he / she / it speaks / learns English at home

The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of that verb:

1. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the third person.

 go – goes
 catch – catches
 wash – washes
 kiss – kisses
 fix – fixes
 buzz – buzzes

2. For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES.

 marry – marries
 study – studies
 carry – carries
 worry – worries

NOTE: For verbs that end in a vowel + Y, we just add -S.

 play – plays
 enjoy – enjoys
 say – says

To make a negative sentence in English we normally use don’t or doesn't with all verbs
EXCEPT To Be, Can, have got, among others.

 Affirmative: You speak French.

Negative: You don't speak French.

You will see that we add don't between the subject and the verb. We use Don't when the
subject is I, you, we or they.

 Affirmative: He speaks German.

Negative: He doesn't speak German.

When the subject is he, she or it, we add doesn't between the subject and the verb to make
a negative sentence. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative
sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the negative sentence. We will see the
reason why below.

The following is the word order to construct a basic negative sentence in English in the
Present Tense using Don't or Doesn't.

53
Subject don't/doesn't Verb* The Rest of the sentence

I / you / we / they don't

have / buy
cereal for breakfast
eat / like etc.
he / she / it doesn't

* Verb: The verb that goes here is the base form of the infinitive = The infinitive without
TO before the verb. Instead of the infinitive To have it is just the have part.

Remember that the infinitive is the verb before it is conjugated (changed) and it begins
with TO. For example: to have, to eat, to go, to live, to speak etc.

Examples of Negative Sentences with Don't and Doesn't:

 You don't speak Arabic.

 John doesn't speak Italian.
 We don't have time for a rest.
 It doesn't move.
 They don't want to go to the party.
 She doesn't like fish.

To make a question in English we normally use do or does. It has no translation in Spanish

though it is essential to show we are making a question. It is normally put at the beginning
of the question.

 Affirmative: You speak English.

Question: Do you speak English?

You will see that we add DO at the beginning of the affirmative sentence to make it a
question. We use Do when the subject is I, you, we or they.

 Affirmative: He speaks French.

Question: Does he speak French?

When the subject is he, she or it, we add DOES at the beginning to make the affirmative
sentence a question. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative
sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the question. We will see the reason
why below.

We DON'T use Do or Does in questions that have the verb To Be or Modal Verbs (can,
must, might, should etc.)

Word Order of Questions with Do and Does

The following is the word order to construct a basic question in English using Do or Does.

Do/Does Subject Verb The Rest of the sentence

54
Do I / you / we / they
have / need
a new bike?
want etc.
Does he / she / it

Examples of Questions with Do and Does:

 Do you need a dictionary?

 Does Mary need a dictionary?
 Do we have a meeting now?
 Does it rain a lot in winter?
 Do they want to go to the party?
 Does he like pizza?

Unit 2 – Some prepositions of place

We use prepositions of place to talk about location.

AT The secretary is sitting at her desk.

The man was at the cinema

BEHIND The car park is behind the building.

BETWEEN The prisoner is sitting between the two policemen.

IN The pen was in the box.

He lives in South Africa.

IN FRONT OF The teacher is standing in front of the class.

The car was parked in front of the garage.

NEAR I live near the school.

NEXT TO / BESIDE / BY In my English lesson I always sit next to / beside / by my friend.

The bank is next to / beside/ by the hotel.

ON The painting was on the wall.

The boy is sitting on the chair.

OPPOSITE The kiosk is opposite the gas station.

OVER/ABOVE The sign is above the door. It read 'No smoking'.

UNDER / BELOW The temperature outside was below 0°.

55
Unit 3 - Present Continuous

We use the present continuous tense:

1. When somebody is doing something at this moment.

 Sarah is changing her clothes right now.

 Her boyfriend is waiting for her.
 We are learning the progressive tense in English.

2. When something is happening at this moment. When the action has started but hasn't
finished.

 It is snowing at the moment.

 The economy is growing at an exponential rate.
 The children are sleeping, so please be quiet.

3. To talk about something that is happening around the time of speaking but not
necessarily at that exact moment.

 Alfredo is studying a lot for his exam.

 I'm reading a great book. (not necessary right at this moment)
 We are planning a trip to Jamaica.

Present Simple vs. Present Continuous

A significant difference between these two tenses is we use the simple present tense for
things that are permanent or are in general and the present progressive tense for things
that may change or are temporary.

Compare:

Permanent Temporary

Simon lives in Birmingham. Simon is living with his friends for now.

James smokes. James is smoking in the kitchen.

We walk to work. We're walking in the park.

I speak English. I am speaking English right now.

Verbs that we don't use in the Present Continuous Tense

Another difference is that there are some verbs in English that we don't use in the present
continuous. These include:

56
Belong - Cost - Hate - Have (possession) - Hear - Know - Like - Love - Need - Own -
Remember - Seem - Smell - Understand – Want

Unit 3 - ARMY RANKS

I have (got) We have (got)

you have (got) You have (got)

it

HAVE to speak about possession

We use the verb to have to indicate possession of objects, characteristics, relationships or
other qualities.

He has three books by Hemingway.

Jane has a sister in France.
Frank has a lot of free time these days

Units 1 to 3 – Can for ability and permission

Ability
We use can to talk about someone’s skill or general abilities:
She can speak several languages.
He can swim like a fish.
They can’t dance very well.

Permission
We use can to ask for permission to do something:
Can I ask a question, please?
Can we go home now?

Offers and invitations

We use can I… and to make offers:
Can I help you?
Can I do that for you?
