Problema 01
Calentador por resistencia eléctrica1
Los calentadores por resistencia eléctrica suelen fabricarse de bobinas de alambre de Nicromo. El
alambre arrollado se puede soportar entre aislantes y respaldar con un reflector, por ejemplo, en un
calentador complementario de una habitación. Sin embargo, en otras aplicaciones a menudo es
necesario proteger el alambre de Nicromo de su entorno. Un ejemplo de esa aplicación es un calentador
de proceso donde un fluido en movimiento se tiene que calentar. En ese caso, el alambre de Nicromo
se inserta en un aislante eléctrico y se cubre con un forro metálico. El bosquejo a) muestra los detalles
de su construcción. Como el calentador revestido con frecuencia se utiliza para calentar un fluido que
circula sobre su superficie exterior, puede ser necesario aumentar el área superficial del forro del
calentador. Un diseño propuesto para esa aplicación se muestra en el bosquejo b).
El diseño preliminar de un calentador de agua caliente de respuesta rápida utilizando este diseño
propuesto del elemento del calentador se muestra en el bosquejo c). El elemento calefactor se ubica
dentro de un tubo que transporta el agua que se debe calentar. El elemento calefactor disipa 4 800
watts por metro de longitud y tiene un límite máximo de temperatura de 200 °C. El dispositivo tiene que

calentar el agua a 65 °C y la superficie del elemento calefactor no debe sobrepasar 100 °C para evitar
la ebullición del agua.
Por simplicidad suponga que el calor disipado por el alambre de Nicromo está distribuido
uniformemente sobre la sección transversal del elemento calefactor que se muestra en el bosquejo b)
y que la conductividad térmica del aislamiento de magnesia es 2 W/m.K. También se puede suponer
que el forro metálico es muy delgado.
Determinar:
a) El coeficiente de transferencia de calor convectivo (W/m2.K)
b) Muestre la distribución de temperaturas en base a un análisis bidimensional del sistema.
c) Plantee mejoras para aumentar la eficiencia del sistema.
