Pretérito Indefinido
Introduction
The pretérito indefinido (simple past) is used for completed actions in the past that
took place once and/or interrupted an action that was already taking place.
Examples:
El año pasado llegó una chica nueva a clase. Era china, de Pekín. Con un mapa,
nos explicó todo sobre su país y su ciudad.
Me encantó conocerla, pero justo cuando empezábamos a ser amigos de
verdad, tuvo que marcharse. Fue una verdadera lástima. Me quedé muy triste.
Usage
a single completed action in the past
Example:
El año pasado llegó una chica nueva a clase. Last year, a new girl joined our
class.
Con un mapa, nos explicó todo sobre su país y su ciudad. With a map, she told
us all about her country and her city.
Me encantó conocerla, …I was very glad to meet her.
Fue una verdadera lástima. That was a real pity.
Me quedé muy [Link] made me very sad.
a newly begun action in the past, which interrupted another action that was
already taking place
Example:
Justo cuando empezábamos a ser amigos de verdad, tuvo que [Link]
as we started becoming real friends, she had to leave.
Conjugation
We remove the infinitive ending ar/er/ir and add the following endings instead (same
for er/ir):
-ar -er -ir
Person
hablar aprender vivir
Yo hablé aprendí viví
Tú hablaste aprendiste viviste
el/ella/usted habló aprendió vivió
nosotros/-as hablamos aprendimos vivimos
vosotros/-as hablasteis aprendisteis vivisteis
ellos/-as/ustedes hablaron aprendieron vivieron
Exceptions in the conjugation
Sometimes the pronunciation makes it necessary to change the last letters in the
word stem of ar-verbs in the 1st person singular.
Example:
c becomes qu → atracar to rob – atraqué
g becomes gu → colgar to hang – colgué
gu becomes gü → averiguar to investigate, research, find out – averigüé
z becomes c → empezar to begin – empecé
For verbs that end in a vowel + er/ir, we have to change the ending i to a y in the
3rd person singular and in the plural.
Example:
leer – leí, leíste, leyó, leímos, leísteis, leyeron (también creer, oír)
distribuir – distribuí, distribuiste, distribuyó, distribuimos, distribuisteis,
distribuyeron (también: contribuir, destruir, construir..)
For some ir-verbs(the ones which take e-ie/e-i/o-ue in the Presente, the root
vowel changes in the 3rd person singular and plural : e → i, o → u (NEVER to e-
ie/ o-ue in Indefinido)
Verbos de este tipo son: sentir, mentir, preferir, pedir, medir, seguir, freír,
corregir, elegir, rendir, repetir, servir, vestir, …
Example:
pedir – pedí, pediste, pidió, pedimos, pedisteis, pidieron
Mentir – mentí, mentiste, mintió, mentimos, mentisteis, mintieron
dormir – dormí, dormiste, durmió, dormimos, dormisteis, durmieron
For verbs that end in ucir, the uc becomes uj. The endings of these verbs are
irregular (e, iste, o, imos, isteis, eron).
Example:
traducir – traduje, tradujiste, tradujo, tradujimos, tradujisteis, tradujeron
For verbs that end in ll/ñ + er/ir, the final i is removed in the 3rd person
singular/plural.
Example:
tañer – tañó/tañeron
bullir – bulló/bulleron
