Crème Brûlée
The history of desserts in different countries can be interesting as they were not
made for business, but to give people good wishes before an adventure. Crème
Brûlée, which is a dessert with caramel on top, is popular in Spanish, English,
and of course, French restaurants. Today, people believe this is a dessert made
by the French.

A magazine published an article in 1876 showing an old document discovered

in 1691 with a recipe for this dessert. Some people from the USA, who traveled
to
far places and studied old files from the 1800s, agreed that this dessert was already well-known in England
centuries ago. At that time, it was prepared in the same way across Europe, but the idea of adding a new
ingredient to the dessert didn’t come from the French, nor from the Spanish; it came from the English at Trinity
College Cambridge, who added the caramel top.

In early French desserts, sugar was not used as much as in modern times; instead, just a little sugar was
prepared and then server on top. However, the term Crème Brûlée was not know until the 19th century, when
chefs started using it. The Spanish describe their own dessert as the ‘correct’ version. Their dish looked similar
to those in other countries, but its white cream was served cold with a hot ingredient on top.

In Cambridge they used another cream with a hard piece of sugar. It was different from the Spanish dessert
because the cream used by people in Spain didn’t have sugar and it was light yellow.

It’s been over a year now since I have phoned my family, connected to a social network, sent text messages,
checked e-mails or taken photographs. During that time, I’ve been living and working on a farm without
electricity. Last year taught me a lot about the natural world, society, and what it means to be human at a time
when the differences between mankind and machines are being eliminated.

This country way of life is often described as “the simple life”. But looking at it carefully, it’s far from being
simple. In fact, this life is actually quite complicated, made up of a thousand small, basic things. By
comparison, my old urban life really was quite “simple” too, but made up of a thousand small, repetitive and
boring things. With all of the electronic objects, websites and applications, there was almost nothing left for me
to do by myself, except the one thing that earned me the cash to pay for my other needs – my job.

Though “living without technology” sounds like a sacrifice, it can be a better option for you. When you’re
connected to websites, you’re disconnected from life. You need to decide between the machine world and the
living, active world. There are important things that most of us can do. I propose not spending more money
than you should, not accepting all technological inventions, and living with simple things.

I love the simple-complex life. While it is not a realistic solution for the majority of people now, we should stop
using more electronic stuff, and more dehumanizing, or tiring technologies. This may possibly be a solution for
those who will experience life in the coming years.

Página 5 de 17
31. What is the writer doing in the text?

A. exploring strategies to make people’s lives longer

B. influencing people to sell all their electronic objects
C. emphasizing that people should stop doing things by themselves
D. inspiring people to enjoy simple things and reconnect with nature

32. What can the reader find in this article?

A. suggestions about promoting natural and technological activities

B. ideas for purchasing technological items to enjoy nature
C. regrets about the writer’s active life without technology
D. recommendations to do simple daily activities without using technology

33. In paragraph 3, the writer suggests that when people are using technology, they

A. sacrifice new inventions.

B. are not living their lives fully.
C. are actively involved in life.
D. have not had financial problems.

34. According to paragraph four, the author loves “the simple-complex life” because it

A. can be an effective solution for the future.

B. will affect most people’s lives now.
C. is a realistic option for most of us.
D. identifies ways to make technology exciting.

35. The advice that the writer would probably give someone is to

A. experience simple, urban life without technology.

B. live in the countryside with many comforts.
C. leave technology behind and live a simple life.
D. do complicated things and make more money.

Writers
I’m Mike Darvy, a journalist, and in my articles I discuss how difficult it is to write. Last week, a foreign
colleague suggested that I write a document describing the daily activities different writers follow. It
immediately made me think about my own routine and Ana Fitzgerald’s, a singer famous for writing songs,
whose routine was quite different from mine.

Ana’s days began at 4 am, weekdays and weekends. Her alarm clock had a loud ring so she could hear it.
She spent half the day playing jazz and taking short notes. At 1 pm., after lunchtime, she wrote lots of
lines for her songs until 6 pm. Then, she exercised for about two hours while singing her new songs. Her
days always ended with a healthy dinner, and she went to bed at 10 pm.

My days are quite different. I don’t have a daily plan and I don’t use alarms. I usually wake up and see if
I have any events for the day. If I’m free, I read the latest news on my cell phone. During the day I just
let things happen. Every Friday I visit my cousins; their opinions are quite useful. In the evenings, I go
for a walk, which helps me find information that I use in my writings. Then, I write for several hours
after midnight. On Sundays, I spend time with my girlfriend at home.

The Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is the top place to see for first-time visitors to New York City. This tall
building was part of a competition between New York City businessmen Walter Chrysler and John Raskob
for the title of the world’s tallest building. Engineer William Lamb was paid to produce the plans for the
buildings, and John Raskob and Pierre du Pond’s company paid for the Empire State project.

The other project in competition for the little, 40 Wall Street, was under construction when work on
the Empire State Building began on March 17, 1930. The Empire State project was completed on April 11,
1931, sooner than planned. The building was opened for business by Herbert Hoover on May 1, 1931.
However, due to the great economic crisis of that time, lots of the offices in the building were not
rented for several years.

When visiting the Empire State Building, prepare for long ticket lines on the first floor, especially on
weekends. You should wear warm clothes if it’s cold and windy, so check the temperature before you go.
Tourists buy one ticket to visit the 86th floor and another one for the 102nd floor, which offers
interesting 360-degree views of the city. Book your tickets online to save money. To go up to the higher
floor, tickets are only available on the 80th floor, where you can learn about the history of the building.

Why I quit social media

In recent years, there has been plenty of research about social media. Some studies
prove it could be mentally unhealthy and suggest taking a break from it. I decided to
quit Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and see for myself what benefits it could bring.

Now that I no longer have access to those networks, I get more work done and have
time to do extra chores like answering more e-mails and talking to people who I can do
business with. I might not get as many invitations nowadays, but the ones I get now are
completely genuine. So, it’s been positive.

As for my “friends”, I have no idea what they all are doing, but those who really care
about me are still there. I get involved with them on a real level, face to face. I listen to
them without checking Facebook on my cell phone at the same time.

I do things and enjoy them without wondering how cool they will look on Instagram.
Before, when I went out to eat with friends or relatives, I’d always pause to upload
pictures of the food. I’d also publish online our location every time we went to whatever
club or department store we visited. Now, I’m living my life for my own pleasure, not for
social media.

I used to depend too much on social networks. My media was constantly full of videos
and photos showing my da-to-day life. It was and awful habit –some kind of disease.
Today, I feel free. I am enjoying something unexpected, which I had no idea I had lost.
