All I'd like to know is: What are you aiming to  , Terry?

It is January somewhere in the south of England. Everywhere you look you can
see the same thing: snow. It is snowing heavily and this means a lot of things in
the country will be different.

A lot of passengers are stuck on a train. It's travelling slowly because the snow
has blocked parts of the line. Basil is going to get home three hours later than
normal. The roads are in worse condition. Ernie is on a bus which is only
moving at ten kilometres per hour. If the bus reaches the station in the next
half hour, the passengers will all get on the train instead.

This is the day the snow started and most young children are listening to the
weather forecasts, hoping it will snow all night and tomorrow as well. That
means there won't be any school tomorrow. If it stops snowing, the children
will go to school as normal. Why is this? Most schools in Britain have oil
heating. The oil has to come by road in special tanker trucks. If the trucks don't
get to the school, there won't be any heating. The law says that there must be
a comfortable temperature in schools so if there isn't, the schools will close
until the oil arrives.

Even if the roads are clear, the trucks won't always move. The trucks use diesel,
which can turn solid in cold temperatures. If it gets too cold, the engine won't
start. Angus, a truck driver, is putting a burning cloth under his petrol tank.
This is very dangerous! If the tank gets too hot, the truck will explode!

Patrick the farmer is taking his cows into the shed. If they get too cold, they'll
die. Fortunately, the shed has a heater and Patrick has enough fuel to run it.
The farmers in the country are probably the only people who have prepared
for a bad winter.

Jeff is a greengrocer. He is doing good business at the moment. Not many

people want to use their cars in the snow so they are not going to the
supermarket. They are going to his shop instead. If the snow continues for
another week, he will sell everything in his shop. The only problem is, he can't
get supplies again until the roads are clear.

The army are working harder than usual. They are delivering blankets and food
to people out in the countryside. Fortunately, there isn't a war going on. If the
government asks the army to fight in another country, they will have to stop
helping them. Most of the people they are helping are old and live in villages. It
is not safe for very old people to go outside in heavy snow. Mary needs a stick
to walk with. If she falls over on the ice, she'll break her leg or her back.
Fortunately, her telephone works even though the electricity to the village has
stopped.

What are the army doing?

Why is it not safe for old people to go outside?

- Marvin, what's wrong with this door handle?

- Sorry, Alex. The door handle?

- Yes. It seems to be loose. Look.

- Oh, I see. I'll fix it later today.

- Speaking of things that don't work, you know that radiator's broken?

- Which one?

- That one. The one on the left.

- Oh, that one. Yes, I know about that. Someone told me about it last week. I'm
going to phone someone about it.

- But all it needs is the special key. There's too much air where there should be
water. That's why it isn't hot enough. Do you know where we keep the key?

- I think so. I think it's in a drawer somewhere.

- Well if you give me the key, I'll fix it myself. It's fairly easy. Then you won't
need to phone for a repair man.

- Great. By the way, have you found out what's wrong with the video recorder
yet? You know that we're going to have a conference here in a week's time.
We'll need to have a working video for that.

- Right. Sorry to be rude but you have asked me that question four times in the
last six months and I have given you the same answer each time. So for the
fifth time I'll explain: Nothing is wrong with the video recorder. Nothing is
technically wrong with the television. However, someone has mis-tuned the TV.
We can't fix that without the TV remote control. If you find the remote, I'll fix it
in ten minutes. Then we can use the video.
- All right, all right. I don't think I can find the remote though.

- Well, you wont fix it any other way. There are no tuning controls on the TV set
itself.

- So what are we going to do?

- What are you going to do, you mean. Simple. Get a new remote or replace the
TV.

- Where can we get a new remote?

- Not here in the town. You won't find a shop that sells them if you look.
However, I know that they have replacements at head office in London.

- So can we buy one through the post?

- Sure, but remember, if you buy one through the post, it will take 28 days for it
to arrive.

- Well that won't do. What else can we do?

- If you pay for my train ticket, I'll go up to London tomorrow and get one. Then
we'll have everything in order the day after tomorrow.

- All right. Wait a minute, what about the train strike?

- Then I'll take the coach instead. And that'll be cheaper as well.

- Right, so come into my office and I'll give you the money for the ticket.

- I'd better reserve a seat. There are definitely going to be more people on the
coach tomorrow with a rail strike going on.
