Creative people
Edgar Allan Poe didn’t have the fast writing equipment we have today.
Handwriting was the most efficient choice. But Poe went a step further,
writing his works on continuous narrow pieces of paper, which was new
in his time. Some of Poe’s short stories were so frightening that many
people couldn’t stand them. It wasn’t until after his death that Poe’s
work was recognized. Poe’s cat, which he called the “literary guardian”,
played an important role in this creative process.
Agatha Christie wrote 66 detective novels and 14 collections of short
stories. She never had an office – she wrote one of her novels in a hotel
room. She did use a machine, though; typing itself was a part of her
process. She wrote when she was in the mood to do so, whenever she
was – sometimes at a kitchen table or in her bedroom. Christie often
started writing her novels long before she even had the beginning for
her stories.
Charles Dickens was an amazing author, he worried too much about
some details. Dickens couldn’t stand to have a hair out of place, so he
kept his brush nearby and brushed his hair hundreds of times a day. In
this study, Dickens walked around while designing a text and had a n
assistant write his stories. They worked through each sentence multiple
times, replacing phrases and changing their order until he really liked
them.
