EXPLANATION: The conjugation of -er and -ir verbs is the same except in the
nosotros and vosotros forms. Study the chart below. Use it as a quick reference to
review and compare the conjugation of all three verb forms.

The Verb estar (to be)
The verb estar is used to say where a person or thing is.
UNIDAD 3 Lección 1
Yo estoy en la clase. I am in the classroom.
Tú estás en la cafetería. You are in the cafeteria.
Él (Ella, Usted) está en el gimnasio. He (She, You) is (are) in the gym.
Nosotros estamos en la oficina. We are in the office.
Ellos (Ellas, Ustedes) están en el pasillo. They (You) are in the hall.
Vosotros (Vosotras) estáis en la biblioteca. You are in the library.

EXPLANATION: The verb estar is another way to say to be. Use it to say where
somebody is.

Telling time
To say what time it is, use es or son.
Es la una. It is one o’clock.
Son las dos. It is two o’clock.
Son las cuatro y diez. It is ten minutes past four.
Son las ocho menos cinco. It is five minutes to eight.
Son las nueve menos cuarto. It is quarter to nine.
Son las once y media. It is eleven-thirty.
EXPLANATION: To say it is one o’clock, use es. To say any other time, use son. To
say it is some time after the hour, use y. To say it is some time before the hour, use
menos. Cuarto means a quarter of an hour and media means half an hour.
