Emoción, Adoración, Avivamiento y Pentecostalismo

Después de considerar los siguientes fundamentos teológicos e históricos de la adoración contemporánea, considere las posiciones teológicas de los más in uyentes en la adoración
evangélica de hoy.

De W. Robert Godfrey, “Worship and the Emotions,” en Give Praise to God, Philip Graham Ryken, et.al. (Phillipsburg: P & R Pub, 2003), 368-9:

Cuando las emociones son mal utilizadas, existe un peligro constante de manipulación. Es fácil para los líderes e caces mover a la gente, especialmente gente con ada y
expectante, para sentir lo que quieren que sientan. Fácilmente la iglesia se convierte en un teatro donde el sentimiento y la catarsis toman el lugar de la verdadera fe.

El Avivador del siglo XIX Charles Finney reconoció la importancia de las emociones en el trabajo que hizo, y dio una clara explicación teológica de las formas puramente naturales en
las que controlaba las emociones. En sus Conferencias sobre Avivamientos escribe: "Casi toda la religión en el mundo ha sido producida por avivamientos. Dios ha encontrado
necesario aprovecharse de la excitabilidad que hay en la humanidad, para producir emociones poderosas entre ellos, antes de que pueda conducirlos a obedecer." La emoción
emocional es esencial para el avivamiento: “Debe haber emoción su ciente para despertar a los poderes morales dormidos, y revertir la marea de la degradación y el pecado.”
Finney reconoce francamente que esta emoción no era en absoluto sobrenatural. Era completamente natural, a disposición del predicador y del oyente: “No hay nada en la religión
más allá de los poderes ordinarios de la naturaleza. Consiste enteramente en el ejercicio correcto de las facultades de la naturaleza.” Para Finney, “un avivamiento es tan
naturalmente resultado del uso de los medios apropiados como una cosecha es el uso de sus medios apropiados.”

En Finney, la emoción o el entusiasmo se convirtieron en el punto central esencial del avivamiento o de la adoración y estaban vinculados a una comprensión pelagiana o
semipelagiana de la voluntad humana. Finney vio claramente que para excitar y mover el libre albedrío siempre sería necesario algo nuevo. Él trató el problema diciendo que puesto
que el milenio estaba viniendo pronto, la necesidad del entusiasmo siempre nuevo no sería un problema a largo plazo. Pero ya que Finney estaba equivocado acerca de la cercanía
del milenio, la carga de encontrar nuevos entusiasmos seguía siendo un desafío constante para sus herederos. La inquietud en algunos círculos carismáticos por encontrar donde el
Espíritu se mueve de nuevo re eja esa perspectiva.

Un líder consumado en la tradición de Finney puede manipular fácilmente las emociones en la adoración, particularmente a través de la predicación y la música. Un predicador
e caz puede crear emociones que van desde la reverencia al dolor, de la alegría al sentido tangible del poder. Un músico e caz puede mover las emociones a través de las palabras,
la melodía y la instrumentación de la música. Especialmente en la tradición pentecostal, la música ha sido utilizada de manera muy consciente para mover a los adoradores. Grant
Wacker, un simpático historiador del pentecostalismo, comenta este fenómeno en el pentecostalismo temprano:

“Y luego hubo cantos congregacionales, uno de los rasgos más notables y destacados de la adoración pentecostal. . . . . . . La música ofrecía a los líderes un medio listo para manejar
la intensidad del servicio. Podían acelerar el ritmo hasta que los eles rompían en elogios extáticos, o bajar el tono cuando las cosas parecían estar saliéndose de la mano. De
cualquier manera, la música dio a los líderes una herramienta para regularizar la expresión de la emoción ".

Lo que Wacker ve como verdad del pentecostalismo temprano es aún más cierto con el fenómeno de la música cristiana contemporánea. Las canciones de alabanza, que se
originaron en círculos carismáticos y se extendieron ampliamente en otras iglesias protestantes, parecen a menudo expresar oleadas de emoción bastante espontáneas. Pero su uso
es cuidadosamente planeado con un ojo al efecto emocional en el adorador. En tal sesión de canto se puede predecir exactamente cuándo se levantarán las manos y cuando se
mostrarán otras respuestas emocionales.

Muchos argumentan por estas canciones de alabanza como una forma clave de conectarse con la cultura contemporánea y revitalizar la participación emocional en la adoración
cristiano. Charles H. Kraft, profesor de antropología y comunicación intercultural en Fuller Theological Seminary, ofrece una razón teológica para estas canciones: “La verdadera
adoración. . . . . Por lo general toma mucho canto crear una atmósfera de alabanza y adoración.” Esta experiencia de adoración es creada signi cativamente por la música de
canciones de alabanza: “Y es la nueva música, cantada con los ojos cerrados por 10, 15 o 20 minutos en un momento que hace posible esa experiencia.” Kraft elogia estas canciones
por romper el carácter excesivamente intelectual de mucha adoración:" Nuestros servicios de adoración giran alrededor de un sermón informativo precedido por un número
simbólico de himnos informativos.” Estos himnos refuerzan el carácter no emocional de la adroiacion tradicional: “Cantamos himnos hasta el tope de contenido e información
racional que no son memorizables.” Kraft llama a los cristianos: “Dejemos de ser esclavos del actual enfoque racionalista y centrado en el intelecto en la iglesia que caracteriza gran
parte del evangelicalismo.”
