Segundo Condicional - Tipo II
Refiere a una situación hipotética y se forma según la estructura if + simple past +
simple condicional. Aquí tienes algunos ejemplos traducidos.

Uso y ejemplos
Usamos el segundo condicional para hablar de situaciones que son irreales
en el presente; por lo tanto, podemos describirlas como imaginarias y es
improbable que ocurran.
Lo anterior suena un tanto complejo, pero intentaré clarificarlo en los
siguientes ejemplos:
1. Situación real: No tengo mucho dinero
Situación irreal: Si tuviera mucho dinero, viajaría a 10 países diferentes. (If
I had a lot of money, I would travel to 10 different countries)
2. Situación real: No soy el presidente de Colombia
Situación irreal: Subiría el salario de los profesores si fuera el presidente de
Colombia. (I would raise teachers’ salaries if I were the president of
Colombia)
Respuestas correctas y traducciones al español:
o If I had 500 dollars to spend, I would buy an electric guitar. (Si
tuviera 500 dólares para gastar, compraría una guitarra eléctrica)
o If we found a bag full of money, we would return it to the owner.
(Si nos encontráramos una maleta llena de dinero, la
devolveríamos al propietario)
o She would go to the party if she didn’t have to study for the final
exam. (Ella iría a la fiesta si no tuviera que estudiar para el
examen)
o If I were you, I wouldn’t cheat on the test. (Si yo fuera usted, no
haría trampa en el examen)
o He would be a basketball player if he were taller. (Él sería un
jugador de baloncesto si fuera más alto)
o If we met a famous actor, we would invite him/her for lunch. (Si
conociéramos un actor famoso o una actriz famosa, lo / la
invitaríamos a almorzar)
o She would be a great mother if she had children. (Ella sería una
excelente madre si tuviera hijos)
o If I ate more, I wouldn’t be so thin. (Si yo comiera más, no sería
tan delgado)
1. El second conditional
En inglés existen varios tipos de condicionales, entre ellos, el second conditional. Este
tipo de condicional se usa para hablar sobre hechos que son poco probables que
sucedan en el futuro.
If I had money, I would travel more.
Si tuviera dinero, viajaría más.
If I asked Susan out, would she accept?
Si le pidiera salir a Susan, ¿aceptaría?
2. La estructura del second conditional
El second conditional tiene la siguiente estructura:
If + sujeto + past simple, sujeto + would + verbo en infinitive (without to)
Aunque con los pronombres personales I, he, she, e it se utiliza la forma was como
pasado del verbo TO BE, en la forma condicional, se utiliza la forma were. También se
puede utilizar could en lugar de would.
SECOND CONDITIONAL
If I were invisible for one day, I could play tricks on my [Link] yo fuera invisible por un

día, les podría gastar bromas a mis amigos.
If he weren't so stubborn, he would admit he was [Link] no

fuera testarudo, admitiría que estaba equivocado.
SHE If she were a good friend, she would help [Link] fuera una buena amiga, te ayudaría.
IT If it were cheaper, I could buy [Link] fuera más barato, lo podría comprar.
El orden de las dos frases que componen la estructura del condicional se puede
cambiar. Si empezamos por la condición If, las separaremos por una coma. Si
empezamos con la frase que expresa el resultado no hace falta poner la coma.
If I ate less, I would lose weight.
Si comiera menos, perdería peso.
I would lose weight if I ate less.
Perdería peso si comiera menos.
3. ¿Cómo se utiliza el second conditional?
Para situaciones en las que el hablante considera que es poco probable que
sucedan en el futuro.
If I became President, I would change many things.
Si llegara a ser Presidente, cambiaría muchas cosas.
If I saw Madonna, I would scream.
Si viera a Madonna, gritaría.
Para situaciones que no son ciertas en el momento actual.
If I had more time, I would take up a sport.
Si tuviera más tiempo, empezaría a hacer deporte.
En este ejemplo, el chico no tiene tiempo (trabaja), pero no es improbable que
en un futuro eso pueda canviar y decida hacer deporte.
If you spoke up, I'd hear you.
Si hablaras más alto, te oiría.
En este ejemplo, a la persona que habla no se le escucha bien porque habla
bajito. Aun así, puede que en un futuro esto cambie y hable más fuerte.
Hay que observar que la forma contraída de would es 'd.
Para dar consejos a alguien utilizando la expresión If I were you (Si yo fuese tú).
If I were you I'd say yes.
Si yo fuese tú, diría que sí.
If I were you, I wouldn't invite her.
Si yo fuese tú, no la invitaría.

En cada frase aquí, la parte “if” es algo hipotético e irreal. Y así, la consecuencia
(con would o su forma corta) es también irreal. Es lo que pasaría, si se cumpliera la
primera parte.

Las negaciones pueden ser negativo por un lado o los dos, dependiendo de lo que
queremos expresar.

If she didn’t have a boyfriend, I’d ask her out.
If you weren’t Argentinian, you wouldn’t eat so much beef.
Las preguntas son sobre posibles consecuencias de algo hipotético:
Q: Where would he live if he earned more money?
A: He’d live in a nicer neighborhood.
Q: Would you give me a hand if I needed it?
A: Of course I would. Just ask.
Second Conditional en Inglés
El segundo condicional (second conditional) se utiliza para referirse
a situaciones que no son reales en el presente, y que no es muy
probable que ocurran en el futuro. Por eso, suele decirse que son
situaciones imaginarias.
La estructura de la frase en second conditional es:
If + verbo en pasado simple + would/could/might + verbo

llamado condicional simple.
