Molly Fox: Maybe  the  biggest  challenge  for  me  is  listening  to

people talk about their problems all day. At the end of
the day, I'm usually pretty worn out. At times, it can be
depressing  as  well.  On  the  other  hand,  I  do  see

someone really turn their life around and get on top of

Kevin Den: As a camp counselor, it's difficult to find a way to get
through  to  kids  with  problems  and  win  their  trust.
Sometimes kids are very suspicious and find it hard to
trust an adult ­ even a young adult. So getting them to
open  up  is  the  hardest  part.  Once  you've  done  that,
they  almost  become  different  people.  One  of  the
things  I  find  most  rewarding  is  seeing  kids  develop
confidence  and  a  sense  of  self­worth.  It's  especially
great  to  see  that  happen  in  a  kid  who  started  out  the
summer with low self­esteem.

Carla Lee: It  sounds  pretty  obvious,  but  in  my  job,  the  biggest
challenge is going into a burning building that's full of
smoke when you can barely see a few inches in front

"HOPE" FOR EXPECTATIONS

COMO UTILIZAR EL VERBO "HOPE"

El verbo HOPE significa esperar ansiosamente que algo suceda y puede
utilizarse de dos formas especiales. Observa:

ENLACES UTILES A)  Para  hablar  de  algo  que  deseas  hacer  en  el  futuro  tienes  tres
alternativas:
WISH  
versus
HOPE 1. HOPE + INFINITIVE  ► to + base verb
 
    I hope to travel around Argentina next year. 
  (= I hope I'll do that)
  Espero viajar por Argentina el año próximo.
 
 

2. HOPE + PROGRESSIVE INFINITIVE  ► to + be + ING verb
  I hope to be traveling around Argentina next year. 
(= I hope I'll be doing that)
Espero estar viajando por Argentina el año próximo.
 

3. HOPE + PERFECT INFINITIVE  ► to + have + past participle
  I hope to have traveled around Argentina by next year. 
(= I hope I'll have done that)
Espero haber viajado por Argentina para el año próximo.

B) Para hablar de algo que esperas que suceda, que sucederá, que habrá
sucedido,  etc.  se  utiliza  HOPE  seguido  de  una  noun  clause  (cláusula
sustantivada).    Las  cláusulas  sustantivadas  pueden  comenzar  con
un  question  word  (where);  con  if  o  whether;  y  también  ­­como  en  los
ejemplos  de  abajo­­  con  el  pronombre  relativo  that.  Se  usa  el  tiempo
subjuntivo  con  una  cláusula  sustantivada  cuando  el  verbo
expresa influencia (como  en  los  ejemplos  de  abajo).  Observa  ahora  estos
ejemplos  y,  en  particular,  las  cláusulas  adverbiales  de  tiempo  utilizadas
en cada oración.

Liza: For about a year now.

Matt: Do you enjoy it?

Liza: Most of the time. The work can be extremely difficult, but it
has its rewards.

Matt: What's the most challenging thing about being in the Peace
Corps?

Liza: For me, it's finding a way to fit into a community that's very
different from my own. It can be frustrating!

Liza: I need an interpreter with me most of the time – that is, if I
want anyone to understand anything I say.

Matt: But  it  is  one  of  the  things  that  makes  living  here  so
interesting.

COMPLEX GERUND PHRASES

FRASES COMPUESTAS CON GERUNDIO.
El  sujeto  de  una  oración  puede  estar  conformado  por  una  frase
compuesta  muy  extensa  que  incluso  puede  contener  un
gerundio. Aunque, a causa de su extensión, no parezca un sujeto sin duda
cumple esa función.
 
  Observa  cómo  las  frases  compuestas  de  estos  ejemplos  funcionan  como
  sujetos de cada oración:

Doctors Without Borders
Médicos Sin Fronteras
Médecins  Sans  Frontières  (MSF),  which  means  "Doctors  Without  Borders",  was
established  in  1971.  It  is  now  the  world's  largest  independent  organization  that
provides  emergency  medical  relief.  The  aim  of  the  organization  is  to  help  people
who  have  suffered  badly  in  wars  or  natural  disasters,  such  as  earthquakes  or
floods.
 
Each  year.  about  3,000  people  are  sent  abroad  to  work
in  over  seventy  different  countries  worldwide.  MSF
relies on volunteer professionals but also works closely
with  local  professionals;  in  most  projects,  there  are
seven  local  staff  members  to  every  one  foreigner.
Volunteers  are  paid  about  $800  a  month  and  receive
travel expenses. They usually work for nine months to a
year  on  a  project  and  then  go  home;  however,  about
50%  of  volunteers  go  on  more  than  one  mission.  One
volunteer reports, "Working in politically sensitive areas
with  limited  resources  can  be  frustrating,  but  there  is
huge  satisfaction  in  making  even  a  small  or  temporary
difference to people. What better recommendation than
to say I'm about to leave on a third mission!".

   

What  qualities  and  skills  do  you  need  to  become  a

volunteer? You have to be able to deal with stress, and
you need to be able to work independently as well as in
a team. You are not required, however, to have medical
qualifications.  Besides  medical  professionals,  MSF
needs  the  skilled  support  of  technical  staff  such  as
building engineers and food experts.
   

The  reaction  of  volunteers  returning  from  MSF  speaks

for itself. "One of my biggest challenges was organizing
a team to open a new hospital in a town that had had no
medical  care  for  three  years,"  one  volunteer  said.  This
volunteer concluded that the project was a success for
two  reasons:  the  reduction  of  deaths  and  the  fact  that
the  local  people  were  so  thankful.  Another  volunteer
says,  "With  MSF,  I  have  had  the  chance  to  travel  and
test  my  skills  to  the  limits  both  professionally  and
personally. The rewards can be enormous."
