DESCRIPTION: ‘The RT-401 Rotor Tester provides a reference test voltage for determining the status of alternator rotors. Current draw is measured and normalized to indicate full-field current necessary for proper alternator operation, RT- 401 ROTOR TESTER APPLICATION: When testing alternator rotors or field coils with the RT-401, itis important fo understand that rotors exhibit a ‘manufacturing winding tolerance of approximately 10%. Available Original Equipment Manufacture (0.E.M.) specifications usually provide a range of current draw or ohm values for each type and number of allermator the O.E.M. Produces. Insiall test probes to OUTPUT front panef jacks, (Red & Black), Make sure test probes are not contacting one to the other; digital display should read ‘00.0"; when shorted, @ Short Circult condition should be indicated, ‘Set DC VOLTS selector to range desired; the unit is ready for operation. ROTOR INSPECTION & ELECTRICAL TESTING Rotors may be tested by coritacting the test probes to each of the rotor slip rings. Rotor draw is then indicated on the digital display. When the probes are removed, an are will be produced between ether test probe and the winding. Next, ‘contact one probe to the rotor core and the other probe to either slip ring; the tester will indicate any leakage or shorts from the winding to the core. Ifthe rotor is installed in the alternator, rotor draw may be checked, but note that the brushes will slightly reduce rotor draw due to contact resistance. Also, the rotor should be rotated slightly to get a maximum amperage reading on the digital display. ‘All readings are a function of winding temperature. When cold, copper windings draw more current than when hot. Loose, weak or broken winding may test good when the rotor stationary but could be intermittent when in service. If the O.E.M. reference gives the specification of rotors or field coils in resistance values instead of amperage draw, simply use Ohm's law to mathematically calculate the current draw spec. This is down by dividing the system voltage by POLE FINGERS, the Ohm value.
