FOREWORD
A few months prior to our auctions, Tam often asked what notes T have lined up, to which the honest answer is usually
nothing! This always leads me to worrying that we will have a rather thin offering, but the reality is that material
always seems to flood in at the last minute and so far we seem to have been able to create several banknote
‘bchemoths every year. I suppose we should stop worrying and enjoy it while we ean.
‘The April auctions comprise almost 3500 lots in five catalogues. Firstly we have a lovely selection of Queen Elizabeth
II currency all featuring portraits of the Queen. These notes are often more popular than George VI notes, perhaps
due to their relative availabilty and attractiveness. Following this comes a colourful group of African banknotes; The
Michael Jowett Collection, Africa is very much flavour of the month at the moment and this is a most attractive
selection from a continent that is becoming increasingly difficult to source original and scarce material from. Then
follows The ‘Uncirculated’ Collection which does exactly what it says on the tin. You will find a very pleasing selection
of notes in top class condition, aimed at a market where quality seems to be the ultimate objective wherever possible
We continue with our general World Banknotes auction which has some remarkable rarities. The crown jewels being
asct of United Arab Republic notes in dinar denominations; hitherto unknown and a very exciting find. These notes
have already created a vigorous fiisson of anticipation from our clients in the Middle East. There is an issued and
uncirculated Qatar and Dubai 25 riyals in perfect uncirculated grade, a highly prized banknote, a lovely selection of
composite essays (my favourite), and some heautifl specimens of course (nothing wrong with that, and we have to
keep up appearances), Perhaps most spectacular of all are the contents of a Waterlow & Sons colour trial book
Scattered throughout the sale you can find beautifully designed and engraved banknotes from all sorts of countries,
including a Zanzibar colour trial 20 rupees. The Waterlow archive is believed to have been destroyed during the Blitz,
so these treasures show up only very infrequently.
Finally, don’t forget (like L almost did in my excitement) we have a British sale the following week with several almost
unbelievable notes on offer. These include several O'Brien number I notes (cry finding these), an extremely rare £500
‘Mahon, and a £500 Peppiatt ‘Leeds’ believed to be the only example in private hands.
Please enjoy the catalogues and July and October here we come.
